I think it's been said before that going into the final mission, you should have a pretty good idea if you are going to survive or not. I would imagine it would be fairly clear that you have a good shot. I would be frustrated if it was too clear cut though. Got to have some tension.

I'll rebuild the Normandy into a goddamn Death Star and turn my team into the Justice League if it gets everyone back alive. Any half-assed special forces marine can die along with his team on a suicide mission. Just on general principle, I can't let it happen to Shepard.
