The only thing I don't like about Cullen is I feel like his timeline doesn't make sense. He gets sent away from the Fereldan circle for being unstable and then a year later he's the Knight-Captain in Kirkwall?

Don't make me feel stupid or anything, but after glancing quickly around for a timeline, I'm almost positive it was much more than one year between Origins & DA2. And technically you could have done the fade rather early on in game...that's how I make it work in my headcanon timeline anyway. I can always imagine he just channels his instability into bitterness and anger.

Anyway....if all else fans, just handwave it. Pretend he went to rehab like the celebrities do for 6 weeks while they are treated for "exhaustion" and "stress".

I would think that Meredith might have responded well to having a templar in Kirkwall who personally experienced the dangers that mages present.  She went through a similarly traumatic event, so fast-tracking his career a bit to have Cullen as her right-hand man might have been a strategic move on her part...only for Cullen to become less repressive towards mages under her command, so that backfired.

From the Knight Captain Cullen codex entry:

"Greagoir sent Cullen to serve under Knight-commander Meredith in Kirkwall, hoping time away would calm him, and Meredith found Cullen's view of mages similar to her own. Of her company, only Cullen had seen mages' potentially terrifying power firsthand, and she believed he could influence the other templars' views. Consequently, Cullen rose quickly through the ranks to become knight-captain and Meredith's second-in-command."

One man's trash is another (wo)man's treasure!

I always wonder where Meredith would've ended up if she hadn't gone lyrium crazy.  Cullen states several times that she's always been tough on mages but that he only started to question her when the Champion returned from the Deep Roads expedition and she got her hand on the crazy sword.

As to why people like Cullen... I think his voice acting really stood out for me.  I didn't play the Circle mage origin until after I was already intrigued by him, so it wasn't the bashful stutter for me.  That's a voice I could listen to all day ^_^

Judging by the Cullen's codex entry, Kirkwall templars didn't have problem with "mages' potentially terrifying power" before arrival of Meredith and Cullen. Interesting.

I assume it's because of his looks, traumatic past and crush on the Magi Warden.

His look?

his looks: as in he's handsome

I personally have no problem with Cullen or his fans but I'm a tad concerned that they might have developed an inaccurate view of the character and will be disappointed.

since the calling i've always wondered if he is Fiona's kid actually.  Maybe in DA:I he meets her, brings his story full circle.  that's just me though.

I think you are confusing Cullen with Alistair.

I have an intense burning indifference to Cullen. I neither like nor dislike him. That said, I've seen dozens of threads like this, and is it really so hard for people to understand that there are fans out there who like him? Like I said, I can take him or leave him, but I can easily see why other people have stronger feelings.

Also, I've noticed that people tend to object to characters being included as "fanservice" only when it's characters they don't like.

I think it's that Cullen is an exceptionally mobile individual; Ferelden to Kirkwall, to wherever the Inquisition is going!  Oh ho ho~

Suddenly there's a surge in female templars.

I could simply make you kill him, you know. But the trouble is... why should I not try to destroy the remaining templars in the Gallows to give the mages more time to escape?

Though there is a valid point that the Templars were known to be rather corrupt before Meredith started cracking down on such things.

One blood mage against another. Bring it on, then.

However, with Meredith not giving the orders, Cullen would be in charge. He seemed much more hesitant in having a hand in the Annulment, which I think is noteworthy.

Well, you can fire up the Darkspawn Chronicles and kill him there.
