Bethany is much better than her jerk of a twin Carver. If you leave him behind, he joins the Templars even though you are a mage. That's the biggest middle finger I think any companion has ever given the protagonist in any Bioware game.

Carver became a Warden in my canon run; he grows more as a character on that path.

I agree. I think the better path to send each sibling on is Carver=Warden and Bethany=Circle.

Hey, leave my little bro out of this. If you decide to side with the templar, he would get angry at you. The reason he joined the templar is to feel useful. I believe it was a rash decision at first also just to get back at his sibling for not allowing him to go to the deep road. I don't believe he has anything against mages. He resembles a lot of real life sibling relationship than with Bethany.

Then the Hawke bloodline dies since warden can't have children and Hawke abandoned everything and disappeared.

Like I said, it was a middle finger to Hawke. "Fine, you don't want me with you. Then I'll join the Templars. How do you feel about that?" type thing.

Fiona giving birth disproves that. So does Morrigan if you romance her.

Whomp whomp. Someone didn't take a Templar Carver during Legacy. He gives his reasons. They're good ones. Believe it or not, his sibling was NOT a part of his thought process.

I did, actually. I always bring Bethany/Carver, Varric, and Anders in Legacy.

The DLC that rewrites Malcolm Hawke's backstory yet again and rectons Anders' characterization in Awakening and Dragon Age II regarding his religious views on the Golden City?

Admittedly, Carver does point out that Hawke punched his way to becoming Champion, so I'll give it credit for that line alone.

"It wasn't you. It never was. We spent so long running, and why? Because of magic, the blight, money, and abuses. Well, I am no mage. I'm not Warden, but maybe there is one thing I can do."

He wants to feel important and do something so that other people wouldn't have to run the way his family did. Trying to make the Order better from the inside out and all that. By the end of Act III he basically tells Hawke that the Order in Kirkwall is too far gone to save.

Wait, Bethany had a crush on Cullen?  When?

Her crush was Sebastian, which seems tailor made for her.  The devout prince in the white shining armor seemed to fit her personality far more than any Hawke I played.  Bethany had the funniest reaction if Hawke is romancing Seb during MotA while they are looking for Hawke and Tallis.  I got bored one night (never romanced Seb) and looked it up on youtube:

"Sister, you lucky b*tch."

All of my Carvers become GWs. He seems happier there. I tried having him go Templar - for science :)  - and he's such a git about it as well as bothered. So I back tracked and sent him off with Stroud.

Then he's a damned idiot and I still would feel no guilt about blowing his head off in The Last Straw, for participating in the Annulment. I wish I could, in fact. I'd gladly trade his life for Orsino's.

I wouldn't mind except for his brutal destruction of the flow of The Last Straw's opening cutscene, which honestly turns the whole thing comical because everyone completely ignores him.

Hehe, fair enough.  Although that's the one time in the game I agreed with him, about not starting the RoA when Anders was right there.  The fact that everyone basically went, "Eh, you're just a DLC character in a rushed game.  You don't count," was funny, at least to me.

Warden Carver admonishes Hawke for supporting the templars. I have no regrets about Warden Carver. After defying Meredith's Right, I wonder if Cullen has any templars hunting the Champion and his moiety crew down, and if Carver's Warden status gives him immunity.

As for Orsino, there was lost potential with the character.

Ugh, Sebastian...

Bethany becoming Princess of Starkhaven. Wouldn't be so bad, although I think some in the Chantry would have a coronary.

I'm doing a mage playthrough, and Carver is a particularly hard character to like, though much of this has to do with the fact that he starts off with a high enough rivalry that it's almost impossible to gain favor with him unless you take him everywhere and do pretty much nothing but pro-templar stuff, which, as a mage, I cannot do. At best, I've been able to get low rivalry, but never really could get him into the neutral zone before having him go off with the Grey Wardens. I will say, at the very least, that Varric and Isabela giving him a hard time makes up for it considerably, and I enjoy Varric's apparent disdain for him.

As for joining the Templars, it seems that part of that had to do with the fact that he was denied admittance into the City Guard, which you only find out if you have both him and Aveline in your group. Apparently, Aveline doesn't approve of his character either, since he's an insufferable git.

As far as lost potential with characters, I could say that about most of the major NPCs in DA2.

Given that Templar!Carver goes out of his way to cover your tracks from the increasingly zealous Templars, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt...

I liked that he was a rival to Our PC...

I liked that he was our rival but what I did not like was that, during the qunari attack when you meet up with him and he acts like such a dingus, you couldn't do a hug interupt where you swoop him into your bosom going "ooh my poor precious baby brother it's ok I'm here to protect you now I'm so glad you're safe, don't worry, your big sissie will take care of the mean old qunari" for +1000 rivalry points

Carver rocks.

And I love it that he gives the protag a "middle finger". We need characters that do that more often.

Why should he lives his life according to his siblings wishes? F*** the player and his convenience, that game had a great family dynamic. It's exactly because there was such a colorful interaction that the family felt more real.

Seems weird to want to trade Cullen's life for the guy that knew about Quentin's crazy necromancy. Hell had the option presented itself I would probably have killed Orsino myself strictly out of principle before he could get the chance to become a harvester, despite supporting the mages in the end.
