Totally off the topic, but unless Gaider or someone has said otherwise, I find it extremely hard to believe that merging Anders and Justice is something they had no idea about during Awakening and just made up for DA2 to bring back those characters. There's a TON of foreshadowing about the merge and what it leads to in that expansion.

I seem to recall that it was originally going to be that b*tchy Dalish mage who joins with Justice

Well, originally Justice was going to merge with Velanna, but they ended up using Anders instead. Gaider says this in one of his blogs.

Edit: lol me and Steel are in sync. :D

That is entirely incorrect.

Mike Laidlaw once said that they don't know what they are going to do in the future (in regards to making Origins). The developers only know as much as they show. What we see in a DA game (I won't speak for all BioWare games), is what they know of the lore at the time. They will never leave things out, only leave things open-ended.

For example, they had no idea ahead of time, that Anders would merge with Justice in the sequel. They just wrote that when creating DA2, so that they could bring two companions back at once.

This is entirely false.  Writers generally always know FAR more about the story and the world than they show in their works, but in the case of Dragon Age, this is already established.  Gaider has said as much in at least one location.

Not knowing where you are going in the future =/= only knowing as much as you show.

Besides that, what Laidlaw said ONCE doesn't mean they don't know NOW.

Beyond this, why in the world are you making such a silly assertion anyway?  Who told you that the Devs only know as much as they show and never leave things out?  You're WRONG, but I'd like to know where you're getting such an absurd notion.

Are you always this condescending, or is just to me?

They really don't plan writing ahead of time, when it comes to future games. The books that explain detailed information about the world are mostly based on codices and perhaps, collective information that writers may have written in their spare time, assuming any of it is canon or fact.

BTW, I wrote "That is entirely incorrect." after I wrote the rest of it. I originally had "Um, no, not really."

A.  Pretty sure he has a quote "All  want to do is be free and chase girls" or something very similar to that

B.  In Awakening he's pretty chill about it though, he's not destroying chantries and slaughtering templars for being templars

So I say stuff like that from time to time even though I'm bisexual. Sometimes I say oh god even though I'm athiest. Sometimes those sorts of comments become habits. The thing is that we as a player don't know everything that's going on the universe.

This.

People can be squarely bi and **still** prefer one gender over another.  The idea that it's weird to think of Anders as bi because he only openly talked about one gender in Awakening is only actually weird to people who don't understand that sexuality and orientation is infinitely more complex than ticking one of three options.

The fact the he oogles only female statuary, only talks about chasing skirts, never gives any indication that he is bisexual in any way, until Justice assumes direct control leads me to beleive that he was originally written as heterosexual

And yet more than a few players have talked about pegging him as gay or bi in Awakenings before they ever saw DA2.

Yes, fans like to project their fantasies into the game as we've seen with the Indoctrination theory.

Or it's just another case of bad writing and/or pandering to the fans.

Actually, the other idea the writers played with was Velanna and Justice:

http://dgaider.tumbl...tions-on-anders

I discussed the plans for him in DA2 with Jennifer Hepler (though we weren’t sure Anders would be the Awakening character coming over to DA2— for a while it was going to be Velanna. Picture Velanna/Justice, if you will)

A merger was going to happen, they just didn't know if it would be Velanna or Anders.  They decided to go with Anders.

My opinion is that Isabela is the most attractive (though I much, much prefer caucasins).
[/b]

She's a Rivaini.

http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Rivain

The Rivaini have skin tones ranging from dark tan to ebony.

[end]

BTW, so was Duncan.

I guess I have no other point. I really don't want to engage the "there are no black people in Thedas" argument.

So far Thedas appears to have no equivalent to the real-world continents of Asia or Africa.

There do seem to be some folk who are dusky.

Carry on. :innocent:

I can't Imagine Velanna agreeing to that tbh plus a Velanna/Justice would have been scary as hell.

Either he or Laidlaw once said that they only brought Anders and Justice back, together, was because they wanted to have more previous companions. Look into it all you want, but you're wrong.

BTW, I've been on this site for most of the months since I joined, and it is only this year that anyone has ever called me a troll. So get off your high horses.

Meh.  If Anders had any side action going, it would've been with Oghren.  They had QUITE the rivalmance going!

Again, writers usually know a lot more about the world than what is shown in the published material.  This notion that the ONLY information the writers have is what they have shown us in game is silly.   I've never heard of a writer who didn't, in fact, have a ton more information about the world than was ever actually published.

Yeah, because women haven't ever had to deal with sudden flirts from strange men that they may or may not be attracted to.   /sarcasm

No problem!  I'd recommend all four parts.

Um, writers do this sort of thing all the time. They even have their own name for it: "writing by the seat of your pants".

I write by the seat of my pants all the time.  Nevertheless I tend to rack up a lot more notes about the world I'm creating than I ever actually put in a manuscript, and I write down whatever ideas occur to me at any point whether I incorporate it into the story or not.  So yeah, more information exists than is in the written, final work.  But then maybe my definition of writing by the seat of my pants is different.  Even though I don't plan out things in advance, I still end up with a lot more info about the world than shows up in any given story.

Either way, I seriously doubt that Bioware Devs are writing by the seat of their pants.
