I know I'm
a few years late with this game, but that's because I do not really like the
scifi theme . I prefer the medieval fantasy theme . But as my husband always
insisted that this game was FANTASTIC
I decided to try . I admit that early on I was tired of the game, thinking that
the movement of the characters was very slow, all the characters were ugly and
looked like a monkey, but I gave the game a try .

Everything
was going, sometimes having fun, sometimes annoying me with the game but always
tends in mind that the choices I made ​​in the dialogues interfered throughout
history and that this could have been something interesting. I must say that I
play role playing a long time. I have experience in several tabletops games ,
MMORPG , etc. . As a player RPG I feel outraged with this game .

First, your
character has a story of overcoming being the sole survivor of a case that
marked the history of the society in which you live, and the proof is that by
the Citadel where you will always have an NPC talking about it, congratulating
you. Your survival and willpower skill is a marked feature in you character. On
your first mission , in Eden Prime, you’re already being scouted to join the
elite squad of the Council.  In many
situations you need to act one way or another, so that you gain renegade or
paragon points that somehow draw your character personality / alignment.

Your team
consists of you being the commander, 2 humans and 4 aliens.  Each one has  its features and abilities that you will
select to accompany you during your missions. At various times you also have
the opportunity to talk with your teammates deepening your relationship with
them.

Only a
certain point in the game you must choose between one of its 2 human crew for a
mission that you already know through previous dialog they may not survive. Worse,
following a plan that was not written by you,  but by a spy sent by the council to follow his
enemy.

It makes no
sense. I'm sorry but this is not role playing

First, the
plan should be drawn by you that you have authority and experience to this, the
npc should suggest a action but not decided it for you as the only one option.
Second, if we are playing RPG I should have the option to disagree with the
plan, have a counterproposal to sacrifice my companions. Third, why would I
sacrifice human if I have members of another species on my team!? Call me
xenophobic but I would never sacrifice a human and an alien preserve, which
incidentally is the same class that the human!

Well, for
me this game was not worth. Not want to end it ... I was already doing download
the Mass Effect 2 but will not anymore. The game is properly uninstalled.

Good move on your part. It saves you from playing through another two games only to have the ending of ME3 scar you permanently.

That was a joke (mostly), but in defense of the writers they had to make certain decisions with the plot/storyline keeping with the concept that this game is only the first of a trilogy.

The choices you make carry over to the second game and the choices you make in the first two games carry over to the third.

Who you sacrifice on Virmire is limited to one of two squadmates because it just isn't feasible or practical to write multiple storylines for all the different combinations of who lives and dies moving forward. Making you choose between a fellow human and a potential love interest was supposed to make the scene that much more dramatic as well.

Most people either can't stand Kaidan or Ashley so killing off one of them is usually a blessing anyway.

While I respect your opinion and decision to give up on the franchise I disagree with your assessment that the game is horrible just because your character doesn't have full control of how the story plays out.

I understand your point but I disagree :)

See Heavy Rain, for example, many characters die and they aren't marked to die or I have to define which of them will die. Die or not is part of their survival ability. Tactically I would send Wrex to this mission (if I hadn't killed him), because he had more chances to survive the mission. He was Krogan, 02 hearts, 02 stomach, 02 livers, double vital organs, advanced combat skills....He's hard to die :)

You touched exactly the point, they wanted to give the game a dramatic charge. However, this dramatic charge comes into disagreement with the alignment which I had been building to my character.
The big question for me is not the companion die. But I send him to his death - without choice, which is a contradiction to the role playing.

In the story I was "drawing" for my character she would send a alien to be slaughtered in that distraction mission with the other aliens Salarian and keep the humans with her to the back mission - the real important movement. I was a street rat, renegade, I didn't like the aliens. I killed Wrex without guilt, because he was becoming a problem and my focus was Saren and not the Wrex's racial problem. I supported all racist Ashley's dialogues. How could my character, in these conditions, choose between Ashley and Kaidan for a suicidal mission and not one of the aliens?

My husband is telling me to go ahead, that I built a great backgroung and ME2 will be amazing with this storyline. Maybe I am overreacting, but it's a conceptual thought. When I am role playing I like to decide and that was supposed to be the most important decision in the game until now.

I'm sorry about the horrible opinion, I was very frustrated :) But I keep my decision in not finishing the story even with a big fan of the trilogy in my own home telling me that I am overreacting :)

While I understand your perspective & even agree mostly, Mass Effect was never designed as a pure role-playing experience. I think there was even some BioWare statement to that effect publicly. It is meant as an epic sci-fi adventure with role-playing elements, not strictly a role-playing experience. As a result, some of your options in role-playing are limited & that's by design.

So, in effect, you are an example that BioWare succeeded in their design goals. It's just you had different expectations/goals so there is naturally a conflict. That's unfortunate but the existence of that conflict actually shows the design intent was fulfilled. I really don't think it's reasonable to expect a design to work as it wasn't intended, although it's fine to express your desire that you wished for a different design.

With regards to continuing the ME series, that's something hard to say not knowing you. If your husband says to try it, you probably should as he knows you best. However, keep in mind, that it might go from bad to worse too as many RPG fans found some of the RPG elements even more eroded in later installments.

Hi , thank you ... but I've uninstalled the game, and I 'm not going to start all over again . :)

I am a fan of Bioware games ... I'm itchy all over my body waiting for Dragon Age Inquisition .

But I have some kind of problem with futuristic games. Example , SWTOR was the most expensive game I ever bought and I must have played up to level 20 at most. I love Star Wars, but I hated that game with all my heart, and bitterly regretted the purchase. The dialogues were tiring, the maps were very distant and companions were quite useless. In that point I enjoyed Mass Effect, I liked the companions, the dialogues and the maps.

I'm a big fan of Baldur 's Gate, and I played Neverwinter Nights with some joy despite of being a very tiring game too. None of my friends have finished Neverwinter :)

About my husband, he gave me a lot of expectations about ME. Despite of not being an RPG , but bringing elements of role play, this was a very important moment in the history of the game, and there lies my biggest frustration.

I respect your thoughts as well but you are really missing out if you skip ME2, it's known as a Renegade's playground for good reasons. There is much fun to be had there. ME3 had its disappointments, but the gameplay is the best of the series.

I was surprised how much I loved the series.  i don't like shooters and everything I had seen indicated this would be close to a shooter type game.  But I tried ME1 and ended up loving the story and characters.  

 

I had the series on the 360 and played ME1 from the release date until ME2 was out and then played both until ME3 was out.   I loved the story in ME1 and eventually all of the characters in all of the games.  Jack didn't start out as one I liked, but by the time I had played it 5 or 6 times, I had realized how much more there was to her character.  I especially enjoyed the number of different endings i could come up with,  ME3 had problems but could have ignored them, until the ending which I could not ignore.  But I loved the series so much I bought it for the PC and downloaded the MEHEM mod so I could start enjoying it again which I'm doing.  

 

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with DAI it looks good.  I liked DA:O and DA2, hoping DAI is also enjoyable.  It's all a matter of what you enjoy.  I Loved KOTOR but can't get into The Old Republic.  It's no good forcing yourself to play something that isn't fun for you.
