So I've seen many comments from a plethora of posters along the many months of being an active member of this forum about having many hours played and the stigma they attach to it.

This is along the lines of what they say:
  • He/she must have no life
  • He/she must not have very much social skills
  • He/she needs a tan[I'll let you figure that out]
  • He/she must have no real priorities
The list goes on and on. I'm sure you've heard more. I'm pretty sure many here are fathers/mothers - husbands/wives with children or students etc that play this game a lot or use to that have no relation to the above stigmas.

Anyways I'm curious what yall think about it.

It's what I play everyday after a long day of working. My wonderful Wife accepts and understands most of the time. And I don't care what anyone thinks about it.

Meh, the game is almost two years old. ~500 hours a year isn't too bad as far as multiplayer games go (just look at the time played of people in CoD, for example). Sure, it may seem like wasted time, but what else would you have done with it?

Not could, but would.

Gosh I said it gets embarrassing looking at my number of hours played but I'm not saying I feel like I'm a no lifer or a loser because of it. It's just my own mental "oh my that's a specific number of hours I've sat on my ASS". Doesn't mean it wasn't time well spent or enjoyed- I like killing fake things because RL is stressful.

It's a hobby and I enjoy it among other hobbies.

Oh to add I'm not even at 1000 hrs yet lolol :D

Well... I've spent slightly more than 1k hours on this game I think, and it feels like a freaking unholy crazy amount of wasted time. I've had my issues during this time which pretty much make me understand why I did it... But I can safely say that if someone put more time than me in this game than he has issues too. And pretty big ones, too. He might just not be ready to admit it to himself.

Yep I was just talking about it in the "what does your banner say about you thread". I admitted that my Nomad banner says I have probably played too much and then conversation ensued. ;)

I suspect there's only a stigma for those who have most likely invested all their time in a different game (the ol' "but my games different" argument") or, at the least, those who don't really play all that many games.

And, for the record, I definitely have more than 1000 hrs in playing this game.

Uh? No, not at all. I'm just saying that anyone who spends this much time on a virtual hobby is likely not really satisfied with his real life. It's quite a wide spread issue anyway, there's nothing really bad in admitting it once you can admit it to yourself (again, a generic "you", not you).

Well to put a bit of perspective..I have 880 hrs. So I'm approaching the 1000 hr mark soon enough. That equals to about an hour ..maybe a bit more per day for 2 yrs. I don't think it's that bad or all consuming as it sound when I get the sticker shock of seeing "880 hrs".

And here's my copy paste of what I said on the other thread about this:

The idea of playing too much is generally subjective and apart from the extreme of disrupting our personal and professional lives in a detrimental way it is our own responsibility to judge individually. I find myself saying "I've only played for 800 hrs" because I know that my total hrs spent on ME3 multi is probably average around BSN vs the top tier. That said- it's hard for me not to view my total hrs played kind of negatively and in a depricating way. But I'm a gamer and this is my hobby- seeing the total hrs makes me sometimes a little embarrassed! I spend many more hrs reading books though, so there is always that.

I don't really care. I wouldn't be ashamed to admit it to most people because it's a hobby that I enjoy and I would expect a friend to respect that.

Even the word "gamer" has a stigma to it. It feels like a stamp or label placed by society on those who game. I think the visual of sitting down with a controller in your hand looks bad as opposed to someone with a smartphone in hand. The person with the phone appears to be doing something more productive when in fact could be reaching for the record on temple run or bejeweled. Your probably looking at it from a socially acceptable POV. No offense intended

I have about 350 hours.  I've been playing since release, and I don't really play all that often.  I have a very demanding work schedule (far more so than most people), and I got married in that time span too.  I could easily see how someone playing since release could have 1000 hours and still have plenty of a life.

Well, I should have probably been clearer. I spent a bit more than 1k hours on this game, but I didn't play from the beginning, nor did I play steadily. I've had periods in which I've spent lots of time on this game, periods in which I didn't play at all. So I guess my average was around 4 hours/day for the periods I actually played, more or less. Which... Well, it means something, in my opinion, you know? If you're happy and enjoy your life you don't spend 4 hours a day playing a video game. At least that's how I see things. It's a highly subjective matter of course.

And yeah, I can totally relate with your statement from the other thread, on pretty much all points. Last one included, and for some reason it makes me feel better too :)

Yes, instead of playing this I could have been reading the entirety of À la recherche du temps perdu and bringing it up casually around campus to see how many times I could make myself appear more cultivated than those around me.

I don't regret playing ME3MP, but my specific reasons for that are fairly different from those of most, I suspect.

I expect there is a wide variety of players here. Students , unemployed, retirees and professionals

I am glad that this game was not around when I was at Uni as had enough distractions without adding this to the list.

I am a 52 year old (old enough to be Stardusks father) single professional who goes out most nights of the
week with friends .
Friday night with a girlfriend and then go into recluse mode on the weekend so my body can recover and this game is perfect for a lazy quiet weekend doing my own thing.

Not offended whatsoever but what do you mean that I'm looking at it from a socially acceptable pov? Please clarify.
