Lol I personally dont care about the stigma. I like what I like. Videogames are a hobby just like anything else can be. People dont have to approve of it because its not their concern.

Also, I agree with Deeber on what he said about hours played

Its nothing compared to the stigma of working nights. People are always assuming I can make it to 9 am brunches and a.m. classes.. It is SO frustrating.
"So, I'll see you at [niece or nephew's] birthday party. It's at 10 am saturday way out in the styx! See ya there!!" *big smile*

Me; *grumbles, cursing the sun*

I have played all three Mass Effect games xxx times given me roughly xxxx hours. I'm able to do that since I've been retired for nearly five years.

Life is too short to care what other people think of your gaming hobbies. People should stop caring what others do in their spare time.

I don't care. I wasn't speaking for myself just in general

So I've seen many comments from a plethora of posters along the many months of being an active member of this forum about having many hours played and the stigma they attach to it.

This is along the lines of what they say:

  • He/she must have no life
  • He/she must not have very much social skills
  • He/she needs a tan[I'll let you figure that out]
  • He/she must have no real priorities
The list goes on and on. I'm sure you've heard more. I'm pretty sure many here are fathers/mothers - husbands/wives with children or students etc that play this game a lot or use to that have no relation to the above stigmas.

Anyways I'm curious what yall think about it.

Did you have fun?

That's pretty much all that matters.

At least it's just a stigma and not a stigmata, then you'd really be in a pickle.

What stigma? Why should I care what anyone else thinks?

Apparently I've clocked 656 hours into the thing - not as bad as I thought.

As for how being 'addicted' to a game is perceived... Eh. It's not worse than binging on your favorite tv-show, watching a film trilogy or caring for an exotic pet. If you choose to invest a lot of time in something you love, then I don't see how that's a bad thing.

Mind you, I haven't been in a situation like Deerber in which I've thought of this as wasted time. When I play, I play with friends and I have as good a time chatting with them as I do shooting bad guys with them.

I don't have hours, I have days played in WoW. Last I checked it was over 400 days. I kinda feel bad about it. I've been playing it since vanilla on and off. Most of those days were however in vanilla and TBC where I was much younger and had less responsibilities.

I play to have fun. I have 1940 hours as of today (early AM at work) - and I will play for about 6 more hours after work.

Basically, I agree with Deerber and QU33N_ANG3L.

That's hilarious!

Well a real stigma does exist, depending on one's age and stage in life I suppose. This isn't exactly a cross I bear nor do I situate the gulf between myself and my peers based on my slightly unconventional preferences re: hobby being gaming as something to obsess about. It's nothing I need to change. I don't really care what others think about it -yet, that doesn't mean I'm going to talk about my gaming with anyone I feel isn't going to relate/understand/tolerate. I'm a mom in the suburbs and many of my peers still think video games are for 11 year old middle school boys. They still think that video games are just for children and will socially prioritize which hobbies are more acceptable vs not acceptable. So if I spent 880 hours scrapbooking for the past few years and could whip out a pastel confection with hand embossing and paper lace layers they would approve. So while no one would say it to my face- if it came out in my daughters Girl Scout meeting that oh my gosh! Mommy knows how to use an xbox better than my kids do I'd think the other moms would think I'm a slightly unacceptable mother and a weirdo. So I do not talk about (not that it's something to be brought up casually just for the sake of it) and I don't for example wear my Mass Effect tshirts on my kids campus!

Edited to add: I do not know why they would place this in off topic- it's multiplayer related IMO

1000 hours in a game you like isn't much so i don't see it why it should be any wrong with that, it doesn't even have to mean you play a LOT just for a long time but i guess some people stirs themselves blind at numbers only.

I'm thinking around the lines of missing out on new games. I can't fathom how could a bare bones horde mode be that much engaging, but I guess that's just me. I need variety. With 1k hours on hand I could play a lot of classic games I haven't gotten around to.

Age of Empires and Civilization franchises are the only ones I could have played 1000+ hours since year 2000.

Heh, Civilization alone would net me around 5000+ hours. Started playing at the tender age of twelve (that means around the year 2000 aswell) and have been a hardcore Civoholic ever since, with several hours playtime almost everyday. More often than not I'd start playing after lunch and doing my homework and the first time I looked at the clock after that was usually when mom gave the usual "dinner's about to be ready" two minute warning.

I don't regret a single minute of playtime!!!

1000 hours is quite a lot. The most I've ever invested into a game was the Mass Effect Trilogy, and I don't think I ever broke 300.

lol, I'll admit, over 100 hours were in ME1 alone, and number of playthroughs might be a better gauge of how much I've invested (I know I had at least 13 into ME1 alone).

I was 14 when I got Civilization 3 (2001). It was such a great improvement over Civilization 2. Though Civilization II had some kind of graphical remake that was mystical and interesting.

There was OTHER games for me to play too. Star Wars, Might & Magic, Bioware games, Victoria 1 and some sport and racing games were on my playlist.

Most of my playtime comes down to Civilization. It was practically the only thing that I played for years. Where people grew up with Nintendo and complaing about how it is to catch legendaries, I grew up with Sid Meier and complaing about that warmondering Mohinder Ghandi (goddamn nukes!).

In retrospective, I think my lifetime total of playtime would look like:
5000+ hours Civilization
700+ hours Mass Effect
450+ hours Battlefield
350+ hours Pokemon (yeah I did play Pokemon, the whole wave did not go pass me)
300+ hours Dragon Age
250+ hours Splinter Cell
200+ hours Command and Conquer (almost exclusive SP and AI Skirmish though, so that is quite an impressive number I think)

Civ is undisputed king of my gaming life!

Only 350 hours in Mass Effect trilogy. I think I have 500+ hours in NWN 1 & 2.
