Not really, from a gameplay or story perspective. Shepard functions as a pallete swap character between both genders. And it's not like that's breaking new ground. Female protagonists have been in powerful roles.

Yes I understand that there is no difference from a gameplay perspective; it just feels different. It's hard to explain, I think it is in part dut to hale's voice acting which make the character feel real.

There are plenty of female protagonist with much better voice acting than FemShep.

FemBoss 1 ftw

cockney Male on FemBoss or GTFO

For me FemShep is Shepard. It feels odd playing Sheploo, but I do it occasionally to romance Tali. I just wish the female models would have their own movement animations.

Same for me. I keep trying to get an earnest MaleShep playthrough going, but it just feels so... off and different.

All the others have been FemSheps. Felt right and natural. Then again, I am also female, so that probably makes me very biased.

Lol no competition. But your lack of Femboss 2 mention (SR3 anyway) disturbs me

Five male runs and one female. Hale is good but I prefer Meer... and playing a lead of my sex.

So, is it just me, or does anyone else feel just... wrong playing as femshep? I mean, I'm not anti-feminist or anything, and Jennifer Hale does a great job with her voice acting, but for some reason, playing as femshep just doesnt feel right to me. I started my first playthrough as femshep in ME1 and when i thought about getting to the citadel DLC with her, i just couldnt do it; i cant picture anyone else but my default shep saying goodbye to the crew one last time.

Maybe some day I'll be able to complete a playthrough with her, but that is not this day.

I play skyrim and I don't play as a man on that one. But with all the races to choose, it seems less a priority. I tried male shep and after two games I just couldn't deal with is terrible voice acting. To each their own.

I played Femshep because no matter how hard I tried I couldn't make a Male Shep that I was happy with.

Also at the time I couldn't romance male characters as a male.

So, is the quality of voice acting more important to you than being able to fully project onto and into the character? Your own gender doesn't enter into it?

Just curious.

I'm a hetero male and I get grief from friends for playing Femshep, or a female Dunmer in Skyrim, or in liking the new Tomb Raider. I have to wonder how comfortable they are as males that they can't even imagine playing as a female hero. Their loss.

Note: I am not accusing everyone who prefers ManShep over FemShep as having gender issues.

In ME1, I play Male Shep because I can't stand the face generator. BUT, Meer's voice acting in ME1 is...problematic. Especially as a paragon, he sounds disinterested even at times. Hale is *much* better as a paragon throughout, but especially in ME1. Meer is tolerable in ME1 as a renegade. So I have to play either dead red or some version of renegon who makes the major decisions paragon while minimizing the wimp factor.

In ME2, Meer is much better. To the point that I prefer him as a Renegade in 2. Hale in the renegade speeches especially doesn't seem as strong as Meer. But the face generator in ME2 is easiest to make attractive characters with. So I play about 50/50 in ME2.

In ME3, the face import bug seems to hit FemShep worse. I had one that looked very attractive in ME2, and when I loaded her in ME3, I was disillusioned at the havoc the import bug wrought. I had to remake her face completely. It was no longer the same character, and I haven't even finished the game with her yet. Which hurts, because I loved her in ME2. The voice acting for Meer is tolerable as a paragon in 3. But still not as good as he is as a renegade (I LOVE his renegade stand down speech on Rannoch, and of course, the Renegade Interrupt on the Reaper). So I've played primarily Male Shep in ME3, though there are places where Hale is clearly superior. Also, I've been able to tweak other characters a bit to make them look close to what they were in ME2. So it's not *as* bad as it was for my 1st FemShep.

Call it shallow that I want to have a decent looking avatar for 75+ hours of gaming. Guilty. :P

I'm straight married hetero male, and I've played FemShep, female characters in Elder Scrolls going back to Morrowind. Female characters by the boatload in NeverWinter Nights. A Female Mage in DA:O. And preferred playing female "General" in The Sith Lords, as opposed to Male Revan in KotOR. I don't 'prefer' FemShep, though I prefer most of Hale's voice acting. Especially for paragons.

In fact, I used to play the occasional Female Mage on NWN persistant worlds (MP), and I had more than one player act shocked that I played a female character well (that is, feminine without being a trollop). :P

How much of yourself do you project into the character?

For me, when I create a character, I typically have a High Concept I'm going for. So gender falls in line with the tropes I'm playing to (or subverting). I prefer female "casters" generally. Unless they're the 'sage' characters, then I go for a male (in NWN, bards, sorceresses, clerics or druids were typically female for me. Wizards and 'spellswords' were usually male). Same thing in ME, I think of what I want my character's view of the galaxy to be, and how Shepard would deal with the problems of the game, and then I work backward to class, gender, and such.

I will play as either one, both VAs bring their own strengths to the table. These male shep vs femshep pissing contests are ridiculous. Let people play as the gender that they want.

Currently doing a trilogy run with a male vanguard. Next time I do a trilogy run it will probably be with female infiltrator.
