I've got a laptop that can run older games and have Steam and am looking for great games worth checking out. I was thinking of starting out with the old Thief games what with a new one coming out and I remember enjoying Deadly Shadows back on the old Xbox but I never finished it. Any other suggestions?
Older games on Steam worth playing

If you are just buying older games I'd look into GOG instead of Steam. But anyway, I recommend both System Shock 2 and Deus Ex.

Hard to say without knowing your preferences and what classics you've already played.
However, I'll say that if you're looking for older games, you should also take a look at GOG.com. They started out specializing in making old games work on modern systems.
They branched out since then, but their collection of old games is great and it keeps expanding. And everything they sell is DRM-Free, so even if you take your laptop in a place where there's no internet, you won't have to worry about getting any of the games ready for "offline mode".
Edit: Ninja'd. That'll teach me to be too verbrose.

Could roll with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

Yeah, GoG is the way to go. You not only get the game DRM-free but also with little goodies. That said, you can get Final Fantasy on steam.

Civilization III for some oldschool 4X TBS goodness.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth are both excellent older games, often on sale pretty cheap on Steam.

I'll also say go with GOG, they test the games to make sure they can run on newer hardware so you don't have to worry about compatability issues.
As for some older games:
Jade Empire
Wizardry 6,7, and 8
Beyond Good and Evil
MDK 1 & 2

General Slotts is correct. GoG is the way to go. Heaps of really good old games there (who would have thought).
There are a few really nice ones on Steam, which GoG does not have (as far as I know). E.g. the Monkey Island adventures or The Dig (a personal favorite of mine when ti comes to adventures on steam). Also, there is Jade Empire and KotOR 1 and 2, the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games (if you like Star Wars that is) and the older Tomb Raider games (not my thing personally but they are well crafted games). If you are more into straight up shooters, there is Serious Sam as well. For strategists there are the old Civ games and C&C. That should give you something to play, no matter what you are interested in.
But as I said, look at GoG's catalog first. They have heaps of great choices there (and no DRM).

I would check out the Steam tag "classic" in order to find all their old games.
I'd recommend the following:LucasArts Adventure Pack (Featuring The Dig and 2 Indiana Jones games)
The Last Express Gold Edition
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2
Knights of The Old Republic
Monkey Island Special Edition pack.
As others have stated, you should definitley compare prices on GOG.com. On GOG, i would definitely check out the Gabriel Knight series.

The original Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2 is amazing.
Sid Meier's Pirates! never gets old.

The original Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are both fantastic games. Better avoid Invisible War, though.
I also greatly recommend trying Max Payne.

I'd recommend you get Mount and Blade: Warband and if you're a Game of Thrones fan then I suggest you get Clash of Kings mod for it.
