Why not allow a game settings option where you can turn on or off the "grey outs"? If you don't want to see it, then you can turn it off like the subtitles.
because every time someone asks for a toggle they have to sacrifice a puppy to the evil god ea... or because it's low on their list and they don't want to keep delaying the game for things most people will never know exist. those are my guesses
But then that runs the risk of auto-dialogue. Choosing to persuade someone, but then having the PC say "your father was a hamster, and your mother smelled of elderberry" would definitely be a misleading paraphrase, especially without the understanding that you failed the persuasion check for unknown reasons.
No, Jimmy, I'm not suggesting that the PC would say anything different - only that the NPC reaction would change. You'd still say the thing you wanted to say. It just wouldn't be persuasive.
Was it really the writing style people had a problem with in DA2 or more like repeating environments and stuff?

I don't mind if it's similar to DA2s writing style, I had one or two problems with it but all in all I think it was fine.
