What's the deal with the range on brutes' charge attack?

I don't understand it.  I clearly dodge out of the way before they get to me, yet they manage to damage me anyway.  And that's when I dodge to the side.  Hell, I dodge backward, or hide behind a wall (not even touching the wall), and they can still hit me.

brute claws in essence of invisible extensions the give them 1 more meter of reach with the charge

Lag? Poor connections to the host can have some ugly effects. Think I've even been hit by a missile from an Atlas without the missile even being rendered... and the other night on one round I couldn't even maintain cover -- would immediately pop out every time.

Banshee warps do that too off host (a lot). Makes dodging them quite a bit harder.

My general rule of thumb is if you're within 5 meters from where the brute stops you can be hit by its charge. I've been knocked back by a brute that stopped in the middle of the hallway on dagger when I was at the entrance of the hall. That is not a joke nor an exaggeration. The game wasn't particularly laggy either. And no there wasn't a hidden marauder or cannibal, the brute was the last enemy of the wave.

Not uncommon, I have been hit by a brute's charge even though he was not really that close. Plus they take one last lunge at you while dying.

Lag. It happens a lot not just with brutes. Like taking cover when I see an incoming banshee warp ball or geth rocket and still getting hit.

I refused to acknowledge the question in this thread while it remains unaccompanied by that Jerry Seinfeld image.

I suppose it could have been lag.  The servers were crap today.  But this makes more sense.

Yeah, you just have to dodge a lot farther than you are now. It's Just Another Game Mechanic. You get used to it.

It's worth noting that charge does have a somewhat sporadic range even when we do it. Ever heavy melee someone and have your Vorcha or Krogan kinda fly a lot farther than you thought you would? Not to mention Batarian hate-surfing.

Lag. You just have to dodge earlier in the animation.

One dodge to the side or two dodges backward.

Butes reliably wallhax. Especially nasty if covering from a prime.

you have to dodge to the left, not the right. because brute claws (where the **** did the claw even COME from?)

Most of the time you won't be able to dodge backward in time so just go to the left. If you can't go left, you're boned.

They also fart while they charge, that is why you get hurt even when it seems they missed you with their claws.

If a Brute walks towards you in a straight line and decides to charge you, it means you're inside the range of his charge attack. Sometimes they charge from quite far away and it seems like they shouldn't hit you, but they WILL. It is best to dodge backwards in such scenarios.

Dodging to the left is less reliable than dodging to the right because of the claw swipe.

Fun fact: Brutes can easily be dodged if you simply start walking sideways to the right when they signal their attack (provided you're not too close or too far, of course).

This. Brutes are pretty easy to avoid on host or on a reliable connection.

Brutes miss my Juggy on a regular basis even on Glacier if I'm not too far when they start the charge, not kidding.
Sometimes just sidestepping does the trick.

One time though, a brute charged in the hack on ghost from the balcony. Never saw that before. He just went over the railings straight in that little room (hack straight across the LZ by the ammo box)

Happened to me too. Not on Ghost though, but they definitely charged from a higer level and wrecked havoc.

Everyone pretty much covered it, but the two factors is that the swipe does extend a little further than the animation, and importantly for MP, you positional updates can be affected by latency, and if the host thinks you were hit, then you were hit.

Low cover is my favorite thing when Brutes are charging. Just back up a little and watch them derp against the low cover, while you're shooting them the whole time.

I find that if I sprint forward and to either side (typically right side) as the brute is charging, I can avoid getting hit because he lands behind me.

If you wanna be cheeky for example if you take cover the one that makes you crouch you can evade the claw from the brute charge so it goes over your head. Sometimes it doesn't work because of lag.
