So why do people think DA2 is so bad compared to DA:O?

The trouble is when that difficulty is just "add more energy to pinatas" or take LONGER to achieve the same that in EASY... DA2 was not the first game i tonned down the difficulty because it represent nothing different than nightmare, except for extended life bars (and how could i notice that mabaris were inmune to fire if i was a 2 handed warrior?). I also burst planets in spore once they reach space (and restart them in easy) because the only thing that changes is that energy depletes faster... playing space stage in spore in hard difficulty was the same as playing facebook games, but without expending dollars or bashing my friends for energy.

I'll admit that nightmare mode in DA2 wasn't very well thought out, but if you're on a console it's the only way to get more of a challenge than hard. If you turn on 'minor comabt details' in the options menu you'll see when any of your party's attacks are failing due to immunities.

I wish they had done something more like insanity mode in ME2/3. Have you played that?

So you're just ignoring my post, then?

Enemies also do more damage on Nightmare, which winds up being significant in how you approach battles.  If enemies also die twice as fast due to having half as much health, for example, then they have half as much time to attack you which may mean you never need to drink a potion versus potentially dying because your potion is on cooldown (which isn't even factoring in the damage increase from enemies yet).

Whether you can one-shot enemies with AoE attacks or kill them before CCs wear off makes a big difference.

Whether enemies can one shot YOU (hello Nightmare rogues) changes the way you approach battles, prioritize foes, etc.  A rogue doing 50% of your health via Backstab is very different from 80% because you have to make sure you're above 80% health or have a defensive ability popped for each backstab in the latter, which is far more difficult to accomplish.

Etc.

I wish they had done something more like insanity mode in ME2/3. Have you played that?

ME3 would be his worst nightmare because enemies "just" have more health and hit harder for the most part.

ME2 is somewhat similar though the presence of new defenses is significant...but that also caused large issues for Adepts and Biotics in general.

Regarding weapons, ME2 actually had different weapons act very differently.  The Vindicator was very different from the Avenger or Revenant while in ME1 every assault rifle was equivalent in playstyle.  Then more depth was added in combat itself with different weapons doing better extra different defenses (yet another addition to add more depth).  Sniper rifles did far less to a shielded target than an SMG with the reverse being true for armor.  Plus powers had the same kind of system.

Really agree with this. ME's1 combat was an utter mess and joke. I loved that the Mattock and Avenger and Revenant played so different. I still love the Locust and Carnifex. In ME1 not only did the guns not feel different but once you got the Spectre weapons there was no reason to use any other gun because they were perfect. I truthfully have the same issue with all the weapons in DA* - they are all the same. All two handed weapons fight the same, all missile weapons fight the same,  all daggers fight the same.

People confuse complexity with depth all the time and it is a bad mistake to make.

Eh, I have less of a concern with that with a more traditional RPG where you actively loot items and find tons of weapons.  If the combat is at least decent, simply getting bigger numbers can be fun.  You also have more abilities to use and worry about (theoretically) than something like a shooter which means weapons being different is less important.

But ME and DA:O combat was anything but decent.

Becoming adrift from the OT, but personally I enjoyed ME far more than ME2 due to the immersive breaking thermal clip policing needed after almost every battle. Fight some critters; get clips rather than advance towards the objective. While ME3 also used clips, they were abundant and often stored in easily discernible canisters. Also preferred the various ammo types being available as inventory rather than listed as an ability.

And while DA2 combat was more visceral, I have far more hrs (measured in hundreds) in DAO so the system is decent enough; had no complaints at the time other than sluggish speed.

I have those in my 360, not "fueled" it in a long time so no bioware registry on them ((my 360 is offline since three years)) . And yes I had, maybe that was why i find ME3 not as dissapointing as crappy DA2 (well the ending sucked enough, but the entire saga was worth it)

The detail comes that Mass Effect is a SHOOTER with some RPG elements... Dragon age was an RPG not a PINATA PARTY. The only pinata party game i had enjoy and play more than once or twice was Mad World, because it turned the aborrent pinatas into clay that could craft arts.

You went from not being able to hit the broad side of a barn with a sniper rifle to being able to do 360 jump spins and still nail a moving target every single shot with a sniper rifle.  Went from having to watch out for those one-shot sniper beams to being able to stand in them and laugh.

Out of curiosity, what difficulty did you play on?  I think ME on like...normal...mode would have felt okay in terms of combat.

Ditto to the above question -- what difficulty were you playing on?

I played all of the ME series at highest Difficulty available, though I only played ME2 once as I disliked clips and language. Believe higher Difficulty may be unlocked after first campaign.

And while I recall the unsteadiness of the lower lvls of ME1, I personally never exposed myself to test such invulnerability at higher lvls.

Played DA2 first. Then DAO. Prefer DAO. Love both.

This makes me nervous tho' of what to expect from DAI. I think I'll have to spend some time in wiki.

Finally picked up DA2 (PS3) yesterday after playing through Origins and Awakenings again to get the feel of the game world in anticipation for Inquisition.  Only played a couple of hours, but I'm really liking the feel of the game and the combat so far.  Love the improved visuals, too, but miss being able to choose the race of the PC.  Looking forward to continuing the adventure this weekend.

Whats going to happen is the hardcore DA2 fans will likely end up disliking Inquisition.

Origins fans will either like it or hate it.

My guess is the lazy gamers who want everything handed to them will be the most vocal.

Actually Dragon Age II fixed nearly everything that I disliked and found bothersome in the first game! Except for re-use of same maps and structures, sometimes flawed story logic and loads of nameless items ("Ring") it's a pretty good game in my opinion! The only thing I really missed was chit-chatting to your companions all the time, getting to know them more even if we were on a field trip; and, any and all emotions felt very forced, stiff, not well animated and ... well, I couldn't feel Merill's pain when she was crying, that's pretty bad.  Loved how the new combat (could have been less "generic enemy waves" but oh well), inventory, leveling up and potion system was re-created, and oh thank dear Lord they gave my character voice!! However good-quality and deep the dialogue options were in the first game it was so depressing not to be able to hear them directly!

I really forgave it many flaws because it was a rush job. No good ever comes out of rush job - but this was pretty damn decent :) after playing Origins (which I found very, very disappointing, interesting companions aside) I had zero interest in Inquisition but the second game got my love for it up over the roof and I will definitely check it out now :)

...as opposed to worn leather boots, Darkspawn shield and grey iron daggers. Trash looting is trash looting, they just made it clear what was trash. They should have gone the next step and by passed the whole picking up trash and just have 2 types of drops: money and magic items.

I liked DA 2, I liked the faster combat heck playing a mage in DA 2 is way more enjoyable than in DA O and I liked Hawke a lot (femhawke that is) and the story wasn't bad at all and the characters were good to, now did DA 2 have its problems? Yes but I blame EA more for that than Bioware. Heck I was more upset with ME 3's ending than DA 2 as a whole, if DA 2 had been its own game and not have Dragon Age in the title and if players hadn't been expecting Origins 2 then I think it would of been received better as a nice little rpg. But come on some time has went by and I still enjoy the game and I think a lot of the people who still hate on it need to move on from it. Was it a masterpiece? Not at all but was it good for what it was? Absolutely.

I simply don't like it because I perceeved it as a kiddy's game.  I didn't expect that from Bioware since the game was a follow up of DAO which I do consider a adult game.  I do understand why it appealed more to other players.

What other people think of a game?  I coudn't care less if I like it I play it.

ME only had Veteran available for the first playthrough.  Then after beating the game (period) you unlocked Hardcore.  Once you beat Hardcore you unlocked Insanity.  So you had to play through twice (with the second being on Hardcore) in order to play on Insanity on the third playthrough -- did you do that?

ME2/3 allowed Insanity right off the bat, though.

Also, I think you may have simply missed my question, but what difficulties did you play DA:O and DA:2 on?

Okay first of all no  races, lame story like a bad movie... hmm no matter what you do the end will be preety much the same. only 1 location like you are stuck in kirkwall and its outstricks no tactical view, i dont know about you but there were times i just got bored of street fighting like the gameplay the combat so boring like you walk around in kirkwall at night and then those bantis come to you and at some point it becomes annoying.. for me at least. and about the crappy story its not that its that bad its that you dont feel like you are the only person that need to save a huge kingdom from mosterous darkspawn. and the no races thing how much potenial it was if you were an elf, for example merril's clan the alienage or a qunari or a dwarf..

ME series - Insanity eventually; DAO - NM; DA2 - Hard

Personally, I enjoyed the purposeful change of pace for DA2; from the single area surrounding Kirkwall to those of the DLC's. I would have liked to have all the races and less restrictive classes, but did prefer the new Talent and Spell trees, and more visceral combat. While I prefer DAO overall, I have also logged plenty of time in both games.

1. Re-used environments and levels.

2. Kirkwall was a small city and you rarely ever leave.

3. Wave combat.

I despise wave combat in games. I often attribute it to the developer being lazy, incompetent, or not knowing what makes a good encounter. In BioWare's case, I think it was due to simply not having enough time and trying to make combat in Dragon Age more intense. The re-use of environments for the leves did bother me, but that's something I can live with if the rest of the game kept my attention, and it did for the most part.

I don't think DA2 is a terrible game like many others do. I think it's a good game that has a few flaws that really affect the whole experience.

I finally got around to playing the Witcher 2 this weekend and wow, it's staggering how much better W2 is over DA2. That is a polished, engaging, mature RPG. I still like DA2's characters more, but everything else goes to the Witcher 2.

Have heard good things concerning the storyline and choices, but it received less flattering comments on game mechanics. I stay away due to profanity and sexual content, other areas are criticized, too.

I'd love to play games like that but I just can't relate to a male protagonist. But that's a rant for another day.
