One of the frequent fan gripes on these forums over the last few years was the lack of female aliens other than Asari and Quarians. Of course the reason for that lack was that development resources would have had to be spent creating new character models, at least with some of the species. That is why it wasn't until the Omega DLC that a female Turian character was introduced.

Assuming that similar restrictions with development resources come into play with Mass Effect 4, why not create greater diversity with the alien characters by simply giving some of them female voice actors? It would be a relatively easy way for Bioware to get around those restrictions. A few of the species would not necessarily need different character models to distinguish male characters from female. Since the Volus are never seen outside of their exo-suits on non-Volus worlds, it might make sense that the sexes would be physically indistinguishable to other races. If I were to post pictures of astronauts in their space suits and with their faces not visible, could you distinguish male from female? Of course not. Why not have the same be true for the Volus?

Bioware could also get away with going the same route with the Hanar and the Elcor. Given how alien in appearance both these species are, it might make sense that a human eye would not be able to spot any physical differences between male and female. The character's sex would only be determined by their voice actor. As an example from our own world, can most humans tell female crocodiles or sharks from males with sight alone? Nope. Why not have the same be true for the Elcor and Hanar?

You know that volus might just sound male to us and in fact some of them might be female. After all they dont breath air, so who knows really how exactly their voices sound. Something similar goes for the elcor, they are not expressive and they all simply might sound exactly like that. As for hanar, who knows if they even have sexual duality like in humans. That could also be true for both volus and elcor. We dont know.

While some (or all) of that might be true, I don't believe any of the Volus, Elcor, or Hanar characters we've met thus far are female. If Bioware had intended them as such it would have been pointed out, since they otherwise sound male to the human ear. Also so far whenever another character has referred to a character from one of those three races, they've used male pronouns.

Going forward I think a better option is still to use female voice actors for female Volus, Eclor, or Hanar characters. Unlike the alternative it won't have an impact on your dialogue budget, since you won't need to have characters state that they are female because they otherwise both sound and look like the males.

Yeah, they have already done this for Salarians. However I can see them actually going back on this and creating more diversity. Either way is fine for me, but if they do have playable alien species, even just for multiplayer, adding more custommisation would be nice even if it isn't completely essential

The Krogan as well actually. Eve was really just an existing male Krogan character model altered to be wearing a Krogan equivalent of a burqa, and given a female voice actor.
