Yeah...it would probably have made more sense for the Asari to have a lower percentage of their population in military service, but for its military to be larger thanks to a much larger civilian population to draw from.

Exactly, plus with their 1000 year life-spans I think they should have accomplished more. If someone starts studying science at let say 100 then by the time they are 400 they should be quite proficient in it. That is the problem with arbitrary alien life-spans, it doesnt seem to take into the account the social implications of such long lives.

iirc, asari spend a few centuries as reckless teenagers, not simply 100 years. minus the few "bookish" sort that may be hanging around.

The retcon was not about the Reapers. the retcon was about how many ships were lost in the battle with the Sovereign and the geth fleet. Sure it is never truly stated how many ships of each council species were lost in the battle but why would then shepard remember only the eight cruisers and no other ships? then say that Turians lost 20 cruisers? That doesnt seem to translate to the third of fleet lost for 3 different fleets. And Joker says that the fifth fleet is ready for action, he didnt say any other ones are. It is a debatable issue of who and how many ships were lost but if the power level of the reaper was one Reaper vs one fleet( three thirds make one) then the war could have been easily won with a few dozen reapers, maybe a hundred. Not the horde of them that we see.

I wasn't very accurate there -- what I meant to ask was what the significance of the retcon was.

Let's say the WA stats were set where you think they ought to be; instead of the fourth-largest fleet in the galaxy losing 1/5 of its total strength, it would have lost only a small fraction of that strength. What would change?

Nothing. This would change exactly nothing about the military situation. The Reapers would still have overwhelming superiority.

but they simply wouldnt. You cant just extend someones lifespan and pretend that instead of doing something for a decade or a few years they would do it for 200. After all they reach physical maturity at about the same time as humans I assume. maybe a bit longer. Also it cannot be possible that all asari just go out on the galaxy being mercs, strippers and everything in between. Then all the traverse and terminus systems would be permanently flooded with asari.

it's not an assumption on my part. I think liara and a few other sources say as much. though I am willing to admit it may have been suggested as opposed to stated as fact.

No i know its said in the game. Yeah in the lore its 300 years party, 300 years matron then matriarch or something like that but in reality such a system of society would collapse sooner than later. I know its said in the game but it simply wouldnt work. You cant have a large portion of your population going out gallivanting in the galaxy for several hundred years.

we don't know what proportion of the asari are in their maiden stage at any given time. or at least I don't. and your right, not all of em could be dancers, mercs or whatever. just a lot of them from what I can tell. also, social sciences are not my chosen specialist subject. so I actually have no idea about the impact it would have on their civilization or society.

Not to forget that it's all imaginary anyway. Mass Effect is impossible according to Our science. Which is what that sociological statement is based upon. OUR science. So, it's all bunk and NONE OF IT IS REAL. So yeah... It's a game folks....

Every time you try and explain and rationalize things from a Sci-Fi game with real science and medicine and so on, you're doomed to fail. That's why it's called Science FICTION. Because if it would follow science it would be simply fiction (for not being real) instead fo Sci-Fi, which meansit's fiction based upon  fictional science.

So amusing seeing these heated debates about the science in a science fiction story that is written by people who is in NO WAY scientifically schooled, but just writes cool stories. Guess how many real physics professors they hired in all this? Hint: The number is lower than one...
All personnel who are part of the making of the games are credited. Just take a gander and find it out yourselves, no need to believe my word for it.

That's all folks, now have a breather and calm down a tad... ;)

I actually like having discussions, even meaningless ones. I find it quite fun.
