I love character creation and I hope for a great version in DAI with a lot of options.

And about default faces, I don't care because I like to create my own.
But showing a default face in a game with several races, maybe it is not good.
Some people can consider that face as the default hero's face.

DAI is a game to play as an Inquisitor, a person and not with a determinate character.

they always ignore the lighting in the character creation screen and then u think you made a nice looking guy, turns out his chin is 1 cm close to his neck or something equally frustrating

This was the WORST in ME2 with the long and unskippable intro!

Yeah, in terms of things I'd like to see shown, character renders are pretty high up there. I mean, what we've seen so far are pretty good (Cassandra, Varric, Trevelyan Inquisitor, a few soldiers....

But I'd really like something (maybe in the vein of the ongoing character kits) that could show random NPCs or default Inquisitors. I'm curious how they look with the supposedly amazing graphics now. It'd be great to see how the races look now - the Qunari in particular, as (despite the face paint render images), we've yet to see the face of the Qunari Inquisitor in the way we (kind of) did with the Human, Elf and Dwarf.

I never play with the default characters, I always create my own. But, I honestly only spend like 5 mintues in a character creator (Saints Row and Sims 3 are the exception). In DAO and DA2, all of my characters were either simple looking or just looked a hot mess. I can never make a character in Dragon Age games that I'm satisfied with.

I say throw in the default face as an unchangeable preset, make presets available that you can change, and don't do any marketing that focuses on a specific face. let the default face have a unique but not super-must-have quality (like a scar in a place where none of the customs can have it or custom makeup or tattoos)

Some of the default faces can be pretty good, and show up as advertised once you enter the game. The CC characters dont always look as created.

I wish they would just use in-game lighting for the CC rather than have dramatic mood lighting that skews your character's looks.

Not enough lighting in the CC.
When you're done and the pc gets in broad daylight , sometimes you can have some painful surprise.
The make up turns out way more flashy than intended for example.

So by "in game lighting" the idea is mostly just really bright (diffuse, not specular) lighting?

Why would you ever want to use defaults?

I don't have much control over my own face, why should I have control over the PCs?

False analogy.  You are not your character.

The correct comparison is that you don't have much control over your own face, so your character shouldn't have much control over hers.  And she doesn't.

You do, because you are your character's creator, just as your creator (however you imagine such a thing, even if it was merely chance) had control over yours.

Well the CC is really dark.
And usualy there's more lighting sources in game. It's just brighter.
I mean it's like meeting people at the disco and thinking they looks just great. Then the next day you see them on the street. And you realise they don't actualy look that good.

Yeah, the CC (at least in DA2, as I don't accurately recall the way it was in DA:O) was very dark.

It was too hard to distinguish eye colors and other details, such as the amount of make-up that was applied, because of the lack of brightness. Because when I saw my character in full daylight... :o ... got to get to the Black Emporium ASAP! :)

Nowadays I crank the brightness up to 90% before I create my character, so I can at least see all the details. That's a solution ofcourse, but it would be nice to properly see the character's face in the CC without having to do that.

its a problem that I saw in many games (oblivion, DA:O, ME2...etc)

the lighting on the C face "hides" some stuff that only comes to "light" when u start the game and u realize u have to do over :P

This is true. It was especially frustrating in Oblivion. Maybe more a problem in DA:O than in DA2, though.

As one of the guys that always uses default faces, yes I would like to see the new ones. DA2 M!Hawke looked like a bum in game. But F!Hawke was probably my favorite looking character in any Bioware game. I kind of wish she could've been her own character.

I want to put a face on the DA:I protag like I did Hawke.

DAO had a black background and a funny blue light, Awakening had  black baground with funny green light (or vice versa) and DAII had a black background with a white light that looked like a flashlight being used for telling ghost stories and created harsh shadows on the face.  All creater screens scewed what you thought you were making versus what you actually got in game.  With the colored lighting you altered your makeup to work around that partucular lighting.  If not careful your character looked like a clown with heavy makeup when you got into the game. I restarted my game several times early on because of this.  In DAII you couldn't see the black hair on your character and darkbrown was not easy. The makeup looked muted and bleached.

When I think of "natural light" I think whatever lighting you use in your outdoor environments seeing as that is where we spend most of our time running around.  Maybe use an actual background image, one that we will see a lot or is similar to what we will see a lot of in game. That way we get a true sense of what our character will look like when we start playing.

Talking in general about character creation, I'm personally worried about the hair. The hair on the Varric and Cassandra models looks worse than it did in DA2. It looks like rubber on their head.

As far as default faces go, they will exist. Why wouldn't they exist? It just makes it easier for trailers to be made and nobody said you had to use them. Some people choose to just because they want to play the game and not spend hours making a decent looking character.

My hope regarding the defaults this time is that they don't lock adjustments to them. I never really understood that and it frustrated me endlessly that they don't even give you the option of having their hair-styles or (nutella) blood smears, etc. Why not? Why make those things unattainable in normal character creation? Why lock the appearance if somebody appreciates that as a preset? Maybe there IS a reason for it but if so, I'm not getting it.

Also, I agree with the people arguing about lighting. It was pretty bad in DA2 to the point where there were multiple flaws you could see in game that you just couldn't with the lighting of the creator.

Yeah, DA2's character creator was pretty baffling in how dark it was. Better ambient lighting so features didn't disappear into high contrast shadows would help immensely.

I don't mind defualt characters. In some games that let you modify characters, you can actually pick a default and start customizing off it. What I'd really like to see is a character creation system like Final Fantasy 14's, where you can change the background and lighting to really see what you are making.

Check out this video; you can skip around the times to see what I mean.

I'm one of those people guilty of sometimes spending far more time than is healthy creating my character. However, I don't mind having a default face to choose from. That being said, I would like to be able to customize it some. One of the first mods I got for DA2 was the ability to customize the default Hawke. Sometimes I like the facial structure (default Fem Hawke's was great for my warrior,) but I'd like to change hair/eyes/tats/makeup.

You're not alone. I rather spend alot of time creating my character than rushing into the game and finding out that my character look's terrible in-game and having to start a new save. I don't see the problem with defaults. You don't like, don't use them.

I agree with what's been mentioned from other folks about the lighting when creating your character. With the eye color I had to put my face right in front of the screen to see what color I have for the eyes. And as another individual posted I had to go to the Black Emporium to 'fix' Hawkes face.
