My AW is near indestructible and I run a little different set up. I use Wades armor for great stam reduction. I have combat magic and shimmering up at all times with arcane shield and telekenetic weapons. If I feel like it, i can put up rock shield but i odnt really need to do it. I will often open with a fireball staff equipped....run in and melee.
Using spellwweaver and a shield. The only issue is hit rate. base 18 +6 dex and still a significant miss rate. When he hits its for 70-120 a pop. He just doesnt take damage, unless combat magic/shimmering is knocked
off, ie frozen etc.

How are you getting such high damage output? I've got 66 Magic with equipment, Spellweaver, flame weapon, and grandmaster flame rune and average 70-95 probably.  I hit 115 once, but I honestly don't know when it happened.  What do you have that I don't?

You can hit the numbers if you went full mag. I am currently seeing those numbers altho I suspect the 120 is on a critical hit.

I do not believe the attack rating increases with level. Your class only determines the base attack. Which is 50 warrior, 45 Rogue, and 40 Mage. Base damage goes up my level, but it is pretty insignificant. I think .4 for warrior, .2 for Rogue and .1 for mage. Defense for all classes goes up by 1 per level. But I have never really put any effort into testing that, that is just based off the classes 2da.

As for your weapon choices keep in mind that your damage score is boosted by the strength modifier. So a high magic character should maybe consider using War Axe for the + 10% bonus. Or even the Chasind Great Maul for the awesome 75 mana boost and a 25% damage boost. Just make sure you have Haste! Lol, that is funny a little skinny mage running around with this giant hammer crushing everything!

I feel like a lot of the resistance sets are unnecessary for an AW, as if you're built right, you take very little damage, anyway. Of course, this is coming from someone who hasn't played on any difficulty but Easy yet (I'm still on my first playthrough), but still, at level 20 (haven't even started the Landsmeet yet), I'm hitting pretty hard and take very little damage. I'll give my stuff out now:

Adam: Level 20 Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage

Naked Stats:

Strength: 14

Dexterity 14

Willpower: 30

Magic: 47

Cunning: 22 (accidentally took too many points here, I think... oh, well, helps with persuasion!)

Constitution: 30

Skills:

HERBALISM

COMBAT TACTICS

Poison-Making

Coercion -> Improved Coercion -> Expert Coercion -> Master Coercion

Combat Training -> Improved Combat Training

Survival -> Improved Survival (only took these for the Elora's Halla quest)

Spells!

Arcane Warrior:

Combat Magic -> Aura of Might -> Shimmering Shield -> Fade Shroud

Blood Mage:

Blood Magic -> Blood Sacrifice -> Blood Wound

Mage:

Arcane Bolt -> Arcane Shield

Primal:

Flame Blast -> Flaming Weapons

Rock Armor

Spirit:

Mana Drain -> Mana Cleanse -> Spell Might

Walking Bomb -> Death Syphon -> Virulent Walking Bomb -> Animate Dead

Mind Blast -> Force Field -> Telekinetic Weapons -> Crushing Prison

Entropy:

Weakness -> Paralyze -> Miasma

Gear!

Weapon Set 1: Spellweaver (+Grandmaster Silverite Rune + Grandmaster Lightning Rune) and Thorn of the Dead Gods (Grey Iron... will replace this with Tier 6 dagger soon)

Weapon Set 2: N/A (I don't care about sheathing; this build just rocks, anyway)

Head: Helm of Honnleath

Body: Warden Commander Armor (Dragonbone)

Hands: Warden Commander Gloves (Dragonbone)

Feet: Warden Commander Boots (Dragonbone)

Belt: Andruil's Blessing

Neck: Lifedrinker

Ring 1: Ring of Faith (will replace soon, hopefully)

Ring 2: Key to the City

With this build, I feel like a high-powered CC/DPS machine that can melee at will, yet cast spells when need to. Health is never an issue; usually, I'll pop into Blood Magic to cast Blood Wound on a whole group of ranged/mage enemies, then pop back, cast VWB on the mob that I plan on bashing on first, then pop my sustainables and start smacking. If I find that I do need to cast a spell while meleeing, I'll pop back into Blood Magic and cast the spell I need before going back to normal AW mode. It's very effective, and I very rarely have any deaths, either on myself or another party member. I do not tank with this build; I'll usually have Alistair or Shale do that for me.

^ Usually AW go either 30 will OR con but not both. They also do ~30 dex which you left at base. For my AW/BM, i have base dex (along with base con and will) and I maxed mag. Even with mag/spellpower to power my hitrate, I ocassionally will still need heroic offence to hit higher def enemies. From what I can see, your AW/BM is more suited to spellcast/tank instead of melee.

Well, I do know that any advice to put all points into Magic will result in all the constant complaints that an AW that cannot cast spells or hit things...

I have 24 Willpower and 24 Constitution (Blood Mage) and I find I have enough mana to cast spells and HP to fight.

I have a 30 Dexterity and a 20 Strength and I hit whatever I want... not that I can buy a clue as to what my Attack Rating is...

My build was made when I first played the game and wasn't sure how I would go or want benefits I would get from the Fade... so it is not nearly "optimised"

However, in the end, it has made a rather good AW. My Magic is abit low at 60, but still the same as the other Magi in my group.

So...

Comparing a full mag with Phoenix's, a full mag will have a higher hitrate since both kept dex to base. Going full mag is just a matter of tradeoffs.

Just did a little more testing. Decided to equip Isair (Icewind Dale 2 anyone?) with the Dead Thaig Shanker in his off-hand, and it was a great success. Keeping Miasma activated, I was probably hitting non-bosses well over 80% of the time. Actually increased minimum damage per attack cycle by a point, and vastly increased it when taking all the elemental damage into account. Picked up from a save in front of Fort Drakon before the final battle, and carved my way through single-handedly except for help with the mages (I hate enemies using Crushing Prison). And actually, I think I underestimated damage output, as my maximum is 118. Might be doing more than I think. Still, I would advise putting less in willpower than I did, and more into magic. Maybe 5 points or so?

^ yes IWD2... I have fond memories of my 72AC Illusionist/Monk tank rampaging HOF mode in all its Wail of the Banshee glory... Ahem!
Well as I said, try not to overinvest in either con or will. Con esp. The game has nice items that + alot of con, or just use bloodring. However, you are currently at endgame so it is natural to think that your willpower is too high. Adding willpower is about getting thru the early/mid game in a easier manner. The numbers are fine.... just not both.

I added nothing to Constition. Only ever increased will and magic, with a little dex on the side. My constitution is from the Fade and item bonuses (including the fantastic Lifegiver ring).

I'll leave that, but I realize you might actually have been speaking to Phoenix.

Just keep in mind your too hit is based off Spellpower, Strength and Dexterity. Str and Dex are basically worth double. Your magic power is spellpower. And notice willpower/con never enters the equation. Even for a mage willpower is a horrible investment. An extra 8 in willpower is simply in extra fireball once per battle. It is not worth it. Pull out your staff, drink a lyrim potion or turn on Combat Magic until your stamina regens. But willpower is a horrible stat.

Somewhat similar but my take on willpower is that if an AW has to take willpower, he/she best take it at early game because it is when the AW can captialize on that bigger mana pool. Later on, an AW can gain access to mana regen items/blood magic that enable he/she to sustain spellcasting.

Use this for Further Searches - http://www.gamebansh...ofdiligence.php

And You can get the Boots of Diligence after you save the daughter for the blacksmith in redcliffe.

The gloves can be found in the Orzammar Diamond Quarters, theres a chest somewhere in there. (IDK where though).

The Chestplate is found in the Ruined Temple (Urn of Sacred Ashes Quest), Should get it around the first 10-20 Minutes of exploring. Going to be in one of the First Eastern Rooms.

Seems to me that a shield would be not so useful for an AW so I'm leaning towards going DW or TH. I like the idea of a mage wading into battle wearing a robe and just pounding the hell out of everything with the Chasind Great Maul. Are there any major trade-offs of Spellweaver/Thorn (DW) vs. CGM that I should be worried about?

The attack rate on DW is far higher. Also, if you equipe thorn + the edge, you get boost to dex, attack, and damage, meaning you are less reliant on miasma.

One other quick obvious question: Armor can have a couple different special features:

1. -XX% fatigue

2. YY increase in stamina

3. Z.Z stamina regeneration in combat

My understanding is that the fatigue reduction affects AW's because their spells will cost less.

However, I believe that anything affecting stamina is basically of no value to mages because they don't have a stamina pool or stamina regeneration... they have a mana pool and mana regeneration. Is this correct?

If so, then Wade's superior dragon armors don't seem all that attractive to me relative to Diligence set because they have bonuses to stamina and stamina regeneration which would be useless on a AW.

Is my thinking correct here? If so, I'm going to grab diligence and the reapers vestments/magusboots/BHgauntlets combo and swap between them depending on how much armor I need situationally.

In the case of AW's stamina = mana. You were correct in your first assessment that Wade's Superior Dragonscale set is awesome. Never left my person on my last AW.

From what you are saying, I was actually, exactly INCORRECT. Can anyone else verify this?

Yup stamina = mana / stamina regen = mana regen... better yet equip your mage with some +stam/+stam regen gear and see for yourself.

Why now if you're making a new AW, go ahead and get RtO for Cailan's Arms. +5 stam/mana is too good to pass up. Im still in the club of Spellweaver + Fade Wall > Cailan's Arms but you cant really get Fade Wall till later in the game. Go Warden Commander Shield or whatever. Took me 30 reloads to get it off Sophia my last run through..... Yes 30!
