Should I Play Mass Effect 1 First?

I'm near the end of the impressive Dragon Age: Origins
and have now been lured in by the marketing for ME2. I did not play
ME1 but wondered if anyone has any idea if someone who hasn't played
ME1 can go right into ME2?
The graphics in ME2 appear to be so
much more vivid, expected since ME1 was roughly 2-1/2 years ago. Would
you expect ME2 to kind of "hone in" on ME virgins like myself without
having played the first?
Thanks.

Having said that, However, I reckon it's in your best interests to fork out the few bucks for ME1 and play through, At the very least, The main story. It'll give you a much greater understanding of what's really going on in ME2 and how everything is interconnected.
It is a trilogy, After all....You wouldn't go and start reading/watching "The Two Towers" without having first watched/Read "The Fellowship of the Ring" would you?

But overall, if you loved Dragon age, and like sci-fi settings then you will enjoy ME1.
But while it aint no absolute requierment to play ME1 first before ME2 as ME2 will recap the story from ME1 for you. it will greatly inrich your experience if you do and import a char from ME1.

But my guess is that after playing ME2 it will be a bit boring to play ME1 (in my opinion) because you would know many spoilers. And many things will not be like: "Oh wow, what/who is that!". Plus ME1 have ok graphics for these days, but it will be hard to watch things you just saw in ME2 going back in time.
AND!! Most important ME2 can be based on your savegame of ME1. But if you played ME2 than you will just have to re-play it after ME1 once more. If you can do it, than perfect, otherwise you might just miss a big awsomeness of all times.
So I would say go and play ME1 before ME2 gets out, you still have time for it.

IMO it's not worth playing ME2 if you don't import a save from ME1
So you're suggesting anyone playing ME2 without having played the original (or maybe just lacks a savegame because they've lost it or originally played it on the other platform) is likely to be sorely disappointed with ME2?
Somehow I doubt that's going to be the case

I guess what I'm trying to say is: Buy ME1 asap and play through. It's epic, you'll thank me for it.

And that quote is false. If you played the game and know the story, then you are ok. In the beginning of the game, if you don't import a save file, you are asked a series of questions regarding how you played the first game. For instance, if you killed Wrex, you would tell them you did. If you import a save file, they ask you these same questions, but if you don't answer correctly, they will tell you and make you answer it again.

No, but the story will confuse them and I never play sequels without playing the previous parts
And it's much more fun if the choices you made actually make some difference

We don't know how much the game asks you, but I'm certain it doesn't ask you about any sidequests you did and those choices won't matter
And that quote can't be false because that's just my opinion (it says IMO)

I'm with Caine so far on this one. The little bonuses should be nice for imported characters of certain levels, plus actually experiencing the decisions made is far more entertaining than simply making them with a new character in ME2.

You don't have to play ME1 to get into ME2, but it is recommended since it adds to the experience.
