I used to work at Barnes & Noble and this is considered a soft-cover edition. In other words, it's the same size as a hard-cover edition it just has the paper back cover instead.

We referred to them as "trade paperback" at Waldenbooks, and the smaller, more common paperbacks were "mass market paperback."

You should make an rundown Jeff, post your canon world state here, so we can see how the world will be shaped once you start playing Inquisition. Like your character, class, romances, major quest choices and so on...

W-well damn, how in the name of hell do I deny that level of command...

*clicks*

That's not true! That's impossible!

And you know, the funny thing is, although you can't tell by the strange expression I chose for my avatar, I get "you look like Luke Skywalker" at school every month. :D

So, slightly OT but since you brought it up... Another friend of mine is also a "Luke-alike." I pretty much have the best friends.

I guess I need to catch up on my reading if I want to be able to keep up with the conversation here, huh? XD

Haha, OK, Jaison. I'll jot that all down next time I'm at a computer. May need to enlist some aid recalling what some of those decisions even are, however -- I've only played through the games just the once, after all! :D

Did I meet your Luke-alike friend when I was in Arizona, Sky? I feel like maybe I did!

That sounds pretty damn cool! I would have loved to have experienced that, haha. Unfortunately I only took to Farscape years after it was already done and dusted. By years later, I mean 2012 D:

It was shafted pretty badly here in its original run which honestly baffles me considering the show was filmed in this bloody country. That's probably why I didn't really take to it at the time of filming. Well, the fact that I was pretty young and sheltered probably contributes too, lol. Still, really glad I picked it. Wasn't crazy about some of the things in the PK Wars but that's what you get for trying to compress a season into a miniseries. Remaining cautiously optimistic for the movie. Haven't had my hopes dashed as many times as you have yet. :P

Bioware have really contributed to me getting into a number of series, haha. ME2 inspired me to pick up Chuck (you know, Yvonne <3) and DAO prompted me to pick up Farscape (Claudia <3).

Still waiting for Browder to show up in DA! It needs to happen damn it! Have him play Morrigan's new paramour or something!

I know I'm coming into this thread (and comment) late, and I've been pretty much lurking the whole way, but I had to de-lurk just to say it was pretty cool watching the last season of Stargate SG1 and seeing Claudia Black and Ben Browder sharing screen time again. I guess they just work really well together.  Okay, back to lurking.

I love the not-so-subtle references to their familiarity in the ninth season when they first meet one-another. Mitchell says he could swear they've met and Vala tells him she's sure she'd remember him. Har. :P

haha, that was great. :D I wish Netflix still had all the seasons of SG1, and Atlantis, too.  At least I still have my Star Trek: Next Gen and Voyager.  On a side note, I read through your awesome Origins thread and you commented about all the Voyager VA's.  I wondered if you noticed that one of the merchants in Orzamarr was voiced by Neelix?  BTW, I know I got into the threads a little late, but I'm enjoying reading about your perspective on playing DAO and DA2.  Thanks for taking the time to do this! :)

Ha, I sure didn't. Ethan Phillips has a great range though. It wouldn't be the first time a Phillips gig has totally flown past me. It doesn't surprise me that he doesn't have Neelix's particularly Talaxian cadence, but I'm still floored whenever I'm made to recognize his diversity.

Thank you, Hadea! Part of me wishes I had more to play so I'd have more to write, what with all the kind words I've received on these threads. I do still need to make time to jot down all my decisions as Jaison suggested. And I suppose I can just do a write-up of Asunder several days from now once I've finished it, and I'll do so when I'm at a computer so I can use spoiler tags so as not to offend that fellow with the road sign in their avatar or whatever. :) But other than that I'm all done.

It sounds like I may well be doing an Inquisition thread come release time since I've gotten a few mentions from folks that they'd enjoy it, so stay tuned for that this fall if you wish! And I encourage anyone else who's interested in doing a playthrough topic to do so as well. It'd be fun, I think, if we compared notes with one-another in this fashion, being that we're all gonna be newbies to Inquisition.

I'm almost through my "mage-hating mage" play-through taking the hostile approach with everyone but my closest friends and allies.  I thought siding with Meredith and being antagonistic toward Anders and Merrill would be really hard, but it's actually pretty fun and opens some really good side conversations.  (It's surprisingly easy to be a d*ck to those two.)  Carver's kind of hard to take but once you get used to him the whole sibling rivalry really works for this type of role-play.  I typically only play virtuous or humorous Hawk, so it makes for a nice change of pace.  Although I'm not there I can pretty much guess how this thing is going to go down with Meredith...despite wholly "agreeing" with her in every conversation.  Good times.

Hadea^  Ha, I'm rewatching Farscape on Netflix right now.  It's great, (except for when it's not.)  Yeah, Claudia and Ben had excellent on screen chemistry.  Loved the SG1 episode where they parodied Farscape...one of the best.

Does Carver just kinda get on your bad side about being a mage no matter how often you express contempt toward mages, I suppose? :P

No Carver gets on your bad side because he is always in your shadow and it bothers him majorly. He sees himself as Hawke's sibling and that's all he sees. He wants to become important on his own.

If you manage to max his friendship he is awesome :)

^Pretty much that.  I kind of dug that dynamic though...and by the end he goes through a transformation.  Just wrapped up that play-through.  Kind of awesome.  Of course, Meredith turns on you as expected, but then she's crazy...or possessed...or both.  I highly recommend a similar type play-through.  It really was fun, and of course it's easy to max out Fenris's friendship taking the anti-mage route.  There's a few really d*ckish things you have to do to fully support Meredith, but it's not so difficult to rationalize after what happens to mother Hawk.

Found that hidden boss too in Legacy...finally!  Difficult, but I thought easier to manage than the final boss.

I watched the 1st season awhile back, and liked it.  I'm in the final month of pregnancy, and I expect to spend most of my post delivery recovery time binging on various sci-fi shows, with Farscape on the top of my list.

Okay, I just finished catching up on your DA2 thread, Jeff.  Wow, what an ending, huh? In my first play-through my rogue, Adria, romanced Anders, and the ending was like a punch to the gut.  I mean, after all Adria had done for him and all the support she'd given him, he betrays her and tricks her into helping him commit mass murder...ugh. Even so, she couldn't bring herself to kill him, but damned if she didn't tell him to GTFO.  And what a mess he left her with.  Usually I see romance as merely a story spicer, but in my game, the Anders romance added a really bittersweet note to the ending.  Oh BioWare, why'd you make me feel so conflicted?   :(

I did wonder how other players who killed a romanced Anders felt about it roleplay-wise.  It seems like killing a romanced Anders would be an extremely heartbreaking decision to make in the context of the story.

Anyway, thanks again for the awesome account of your play-through!  It was interesting reading your thoughts on why you made the decisions you did in your game, and I'm looking forward to your thoughts on DAI! :)

My Hawke romanced Anders and it was very heartbreaking. But I roleplayed her as 'family above all else' and when Meredith invoked the Right of Annulment, she lost it of course. Anders had just betrayed her on so many levels, and put her sister (Bethany was in the Circle) in extreme danger. In that moment of rage, she saw no other way out than to kill him.

If Bethany had been a Grey Warden or died in the Deep Roads, I think it'd have gone a lot different.

Good point regarding Bethany.  Anders was one of those characters I both loved and hated.  Well, I guess he did warn Hawke in the beginning, though.

HI Jeff - I've spent last night and this evening reading through this thread and wanted to thank you for sharing it all - it was so enjoyable to read! Going to have to look out your Origins post soon too. I'm so glad you enjoyed DA2 - it was my first BioWare game and the one that got me hooked on Dragon Age and later Mass Effect (which I also played backwards, playing ME2 first - I only had a PS3 at the time so that was the only option.

Interesting, I don't believe I've read someone's post who started their BioWare adventures with DA2. Good for you for continuing on to Mass Effect! If you can at all get your hands on KOTOR, please do so!

Personally, I've always liked DA2 for the combat improvements. I realize the strategy was minimalized with the waves of enemies, but the game just felt so much better on consoles (PS3 here) than Origins did.

Goodness, PS3 here as well for DA (well, I guess everyone knows that, but worth repeating) and DA2 flows like butter by comparison. And that's not to say there aren't framerate issues or anything. But gone is the menu lag so bad it made me really dread spending lots of time reading the codex in Origins, which is terrible because I love reading. :P

Speaking of reading, I finished Asunder. Holy mackerel, but that was a damn fine book! If you enjoyed the first two Gaider novels and look forward to Inquisition you have every reason to hunt down this novel. It blows them away and shines so much delicious context on a crucial event in the Dragon Age world which will absolutely matter in the third game. I'm sure between exhaustive codex mentions and NPC backstory info dumps you'll be fine without it (and The Masked Empire, by all accounts, clearly follows this trend and should probably be read as well) but the chance to "be there" and "experience it firsthand" instead, especially when it's so beautifully captured? Nah, you gotta read Asunder. Damn.

I'll post spoiler-y thoughts and analysis next time I have a chance to sit at a computer and properly mark them and get carried away as you all know I tend to do.

Glad you enjoyed Jeff. From what I read, TME will be another excellent book.

And

I know that, though I base my opinion on a book on the writing, and not if it ends/follow a particular path. And the writing, from what I read, seems very good.
For example, I don't particulary like the fact that mages and templars are entangled in a war that could seriously weaken southern Thedas, but I still like Asunder. Or the fact that I don't like much Adrian and Lambert's actions/stance, but i think they're well-written characters.
