I took your advice and am now playing my billionth playthrough of DA2. XD It's great fun so far. I too am playing a snarky male Hawke, which is my fave. I'm female in real life, and I just adore male Hawke's voice. Is that creepy? Sorta? Yeah. Haha. I've played plenty of female Hawkes too though, and her voice is great too. If you do a second playthrough, I highly suggest playing female Hawke!

Ohhhhh, I feel your pain about Bethany. It's been so long since I played my first game in 2011 that I don't remember what happened. Crazy, right? That's why I love this account of your playthrough so much! I can't wait to see what you get up to in Act II. And man, this game is gonna get you good at some moments if you reacted so strongly to Bethany...that's all I'm gonna say. Be prepared for BioWare to pummel your emotions even more than they already have.

Ha, not creepy at all, I get that way with certain voice actors myself. The probability of my literally swooning whenever, say, Claudia Black says a single word increases exponentially with each shot of liquor, so you do not want to see me watching Farscape at a party. I get to see her, too? WHAT IS THIS SORCERY.

BioWare excels at that, don't they? Thanks for the warning, I'll remember to find a better spot for my controller next time around! But seriously, that's great that you get to recall all these distant stars as I make my way (back and forth) through Kirkwall. Hopefully I'll continue making amateurish first-run crucial decisions for your viewing pleasure! :P

Oh, so that's what the star means? Huh. Special. Heh, of course. I'm surprised I never made the connection.

Yes, and they tend to be tied to your personality type or F/R status with a companion, for example a Diplomatic Hawke might get one in a particular conversation, while Sarcastic and Aggressive would not.

Hey Jeff, if you get the opportunity, there's an occasion where you have to go to the Chantry at night. Do it alone.

I'm trying to recall if it happens more than once, but if I remember correctly it's only the one time where you actually have to go into the Chantry at night. It has something to do with Mother Petrice. But do it alone, if you can. The fight can be tough if you're not ready for it, but it's worth it. That's all I'll say.

DA2 does hit the family notes pretty well but there plenty of times that I felt that it fell short. Of course, YMMV and all that jazz. :]

Leandra was just a character I never really felt I connected with and that blame game right at the beginning is probably one of the reasons, along with just how she conducts herself generally. I felt much more of a link with Mama Cousland, honestly.

The ogre-smashed sibling's death becomes more meaningful if you've done a playthrough with them surviving.

True, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Merrill hasn't actually gotten a conversation choice yet

Almost missed this one. Merrill does have a quest in the beginning of act 2, but it is only available if you don't take your sibling to the Deep Roads.

Yeah Bethany bit the dust my first time through. I tried starting Act II but just couldn't get it out of my head, so I looked online and did the Anders thing. Personally I'm happy with it, but it sort of bothers me that I view a situation like that as "losing" as opposed to being able to weave it into an emotional story.

I was waiting to see how the Deep Road would turn out...oh well , poor Bethany.

DA2 can be very depressing at times , sometimes depending on how you played things can get worse... :( .

My first playthrough was a bit chaotic.

Looking forward to the rest of  Garrett Hawke adventures , act 2  is pretty cool ...

Personally, I never thought anything of Leandra reflexively blaming Hawke for her sibling's death; it's just a random outburst that she didn't actually mean.

A fair interpretation- but then, I can also see the interpretation of 'she meant it when she said it,' something she might regret expressing and apologize for but she actually felt. Being true doesn't mean she doesn't love Hawke, or forgive them.

And, of course, how Hawke perceives it matters as well: does Hawke forgive and dismiss, or does it linger around like a bit of guilt long after Leandra moved past it? Such things happen.

That could well also happen. I just don't see Hawke having a grudge with Leandra over it. Perhaps.

To elaborate, my warrior Hawke and Carver made a sort of sibling pact before Ostagar that they wouldn't lock themselves in mourning or guilt forever if the other one died in battle, and while warriorHawke was certainly deeply saddened by Carver's death, it was something she was... kind of emotionally prepared for and was able to move past. She's overall a happier person than my mage Hawke, who never quite got past Bethany's death as some kind of failure on her part and responded by pushing herself harder, which is why she tends to seesaw between diplomatic and aggressive whereas my warrior's almost purely diplomatic.

At least, that was my intent with the mage, but it's made a little difficult by the gigantic timeskips that imply a certain lack of proactivity on Hawke's part, so I've had to contemplate a lot of filler for those three-year gaps (one of my ideas being that quests within the act that aren't the main quest chain can have happened before the larger chain itself, in canon, and could have happened within the time that had been theoretically skipped over... maybe).

My Warrior and mage Hawke had the same reaction on their sibling's death.

Bethany being a civilian, and seemingly just in general need of protection in general, does add to that.

It bugs me because the nonmage plotline overall makes more sense and doesn't require as many flimsy handwaves as the mage one does, but I liked the mage's personal story a lot better. Which may be why I've never finished a nonmage playthrough.

I can definitely agree. My Warrior Hawke was very protective of Bethany, reason why he didn't let her stay alone in Kirkwall when he was on the DR expediction.

Same here, which is why she died. And thus more guilt, and more sensitive about family.

Excellent.

Excellent.

She didn't die in mine (which was my first as well). I brought Anders because I thought that his experience with darskpawn, his GW ability and his healing skills would've been very useful.

Jeff, I just remembered something. I don't think anyone else has given you this advice before, but if you like the Qunari in the game, you should speak to the Arishok after you do anything that involves Qunari. I never would have thought to do that until someone pointed it out to me too, but you get some rather interesting conversations. I hope this isn't too spoilery!

Would you believe I actually had the opportunity to speak with her about this face-to-face once and she burst into a fit of laughter? Because it happened and it was golden.

She also asked me where the McRib was if I was going to have the gall to bring it up.

Me being how I am, I rarely look at such instances as "losing", regardless of what the writers may or may not have been shooting for us to feel in that regard. I won't go into details for fear of spoilers, but I know you'll know what I mean when I say that although I'll never end a Mass Effect run in a supremely dark fashion, I'll never go for the bare minimum number of deaths, either. I like what the writing occasionally manages to reflect when certain people kick the bucket.

I have no doubt I'll enjoy a Bethany-lives playthrough soon enough, and/or a Carver's-a-Warden, and the rest of those permutations, but I "like" losing sometimes. :P

I appreciate it! I actually did think to chat him up immediately after my first encounter with him, just in case, and I was pleasantly surprised to find myself engaged in a solid eight-minute back-and-forth with the chap. I'll be sure to keep that up now.

Very small update for now. And for once I actually mean it, too! I only had about 45 minutes of DA2 time yesterday. Busy day, midterm studying and such. Although I do want to point out that not this coming week but the week thereafter just so happens to be spring break, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see this file finished by the time that's over and done with...

What did I do with that 45 minutes? Well, for starters I wandered aimlessly and perused wares. Picked up some critical upgrades. Decked out my team.

But I also did a single mission -- Repentance. Took Sebastian with me to a certain estate. I suppose I should have expected the choir boy's worst nightmares to involve softcore porn. Some weird stuff here, man! Oh, and lots of cool Codex entries. Have I mentioned how much I dig the Codex entries frequently popping up on screen? You know I get where people are coming from when they say DA2 oversimplifies stuff (it does a little for me, and I don't even like complex systems very much) but this is definitely an improvement over having to reach into Origins' Codex and locate everything new all the time. I know it doesn't sound like much but trying doing it on a PS3 where the menu lags like crazy due to optimization issues galore and you'll feel like you're running the game on a 786mhz or something.

I guess I should talk more about the mission itself though. Hmm, not much to say about the opening portion aside from mentioning the softcore porn thing again, because really, that deserves to be said twice. Then we confronted the Desire Demon (hey look, she has her own name? "Allure", eh? OK...) that had helped the already-corrupted jealous noble lady usurp Vael power in Starkhaven. I let her speak her mind a little before Sebastian shot an arrow, which is... maybe why I wound up with a +15 Rivalry after the fight? I guess? In any case that hard-earned modifier was completely wiped when I wound up with +15 Friendship between a short scene immediately afterward and dialogue with the guy back at the Chantry.

Found his bow of course. Gave it to him, had a chatsie about it. Was hoping it'd equip. Voila, it did! And it's pretty good, too! Yay!

But I don't know how often I'll be using this guy. Sebastian's a serviceable fellow, but he's not striking me like much of the rest of the cast. He's no Javik or Shale when it comes to this D1DLC mechanic. But it's nice to have a priest's thoughts and his eyes are absurdly blue, so that's something.

@JeffZero, interesting what you think about Sebastian. I agree that I didn't find him very compelling, although I am interested to see what you think as things progress. And yes, his eyes are very blue and very gorgeous lol.

As for Allure, more powerful Desire demons, and demons in general, tend to be named.

Sebastian also has a very nice voice and accent, too bad only bullshit flows from it. I tend to get lost when hearing his voice, hearing nothing at all but his voice itself.

Sebastian 's a bit bland.

I like him , because his accent and his attitude is hilarious.I just can't take him seriously somehow.

But he's Choir Boy ,I never felt like he had his place among  Hawke's crew.

On the bright side , his dlc gets a bit more interesting in Act 3.It brings some nice informations ...and something else.^^

That's great, haha. Nice to see she has a sense of humour about it all. Can't wait to see her back on our screens if this Farscape movie thing really goes ahead. :)

Sebastian's okay, but his DLC has the flaw of completely breaking the flow of one of the ending scenes.
