Ahoy Jeff  :wizard: !! Looks like you're really flying through Act 2. My only concern is that I don't want you to skip out on your romance. I'm pretty sure it'll be Merrill now since you told Isabela y'all are just friends. So... make sure you don't accept the "final" mission before something romantic has happened between you and Merrill (b/c by then it's too late). Plus... I'm assuming you've been flirting with her? The "final" mission (final mission of Act 2, that is) will be pretty obvious; you'll be asked, "Are you SURE you've got nothing else to do before going forward?" lol etc. etc. Hopefully Merrill is pretty close to being rivaled or friended at this point so things will trigger.

This... and, in addition, I would recommend that you not be afraid to use console commands to nudge her approval upward a bit further if you happen to be short. It's worth it.

He's playing on PS3. He can't use console commands.

Just gonna reply to one thing right now as I'm mid-walk -- console commands aren't an option on PS3 :P

So I need to see some form of initiation between my romance pick by the end of Act 2 in order for one to exist in Act 3, right?

Yes, you will indeed get a "sign" more or less before Act 2 ends.

Ooh. It might be a better idea to try rivaling Merrill then it I'm blasting through Act 2 already. She's been in the center area and it's ~20% outskirts for so long but typically somewhat closer to the red than the blue. :/

:pinched: Hmm unfortunately I'm not an expert on the Merrill romance. It's too bad you gave her that Dalish relic; that would have really shot her into the rivalry zone if you hadn't. Hmm, well, I'll just ask: have you flirted with her at every given opportunity in Act 2? And, um, have you gone back to your house... at some point... during this Act?

I don't want to spoil you, but I don't want you to lose your chance of romance, either!

Anders can heal Bartrand's mind temporarily, making Varric actually want to spare Bartrand by talking to sane Bartrand.

If you heal him this way and let him live Varric gains friendship.

If you don't heal him and let him live Varric gains rivalry.

Yeah, I've flirted with her a couple of times. And I have indeed gone back to my house quite frequently, I'm OCD about always saving in Hawke's room. Ditto Shepard and the Normandy. Cousland had to stand just so by the campfire even.

If I've lost the ability to romance her this file I won't really be devastated for what it's worth. There's always next time. I think the worst I'll feel is from not being able to provide commentary on that front for you guys. :P

Hmm, that's cool about Anders, crafty bastard. But I don't know, are you sure Varric gains rivalry from letting him live? 'Cause I definitely saw friendship pop up afterward.

Or I guess you just mean if Anders is present, offers, as I say no but still spare Bartrand?

The F/R points are reversed if you pick Anders' special option. In this case sparing nets friendship.

If I remember correctly there is a new conversation option if Anders is in party. Its icon is shadow of human head with a question mark inside the brain. I believe the text of conversation was "Anders?...". If you pick that Anders casts something and Bartrand becomes sane for a couple of seconds and begs forgiveness. Doing this and sparing Bartrand grants friendship to Varric.

Sparing him without doing this grants rivalry to Varric.

You need Merrill's Questioning Beliefs quest to proceed with her romance. You get QB at 50% F/R.

There is an gift you can buy for Merrill in order to increase her approval. Did you found it Jeff?

Yup, sure did. Thanks for the details everyone. :)

When you say "50% F/R", you mean it only needs to he halfway to the end of the spectrum? Hmm, if so then Anders took a long while to pop in with a "Questioning Beliefs" of his own, because that only came up once his friendship was at 100%.

Anders QB is also at 50%, but you need to complete Dissent as well. Similarly, Merrill's QB needs 50% and Mirror Image

Out of curiosity for the Merrill romance- do you have to pick all the flirt options from the start, or just some of them?

Oh, and on-topic comment as well. Yeah.

Ah, college- back when I could play games so freely. I look fondly back on you. I'm kind of jealous I don't have the freedom to play as much as frequently as you. I haven't even finished Act 1.

Good to see you are still progressing, and keep of the chipper tune. I'm enjoying it greatly, and look forward to seeing how you reflect the snark going forward.

And it looks like you're romancing Merrill! And on a friendship-ish route... perhaps? I'm not sure if it's overall F/R that determines it, or the choice with the eluvian tool, but I do recommend you make up your mind. Considering the thematic differences, getting on track might help it be more consistent.

It might help to decide now what sort of person Garret Hawke is to his companions and/or potential love interest. Do you trust your friends to know what's best, to stand by them while they follow their hearts and best intentions? Or are you a rival who thinks you know better, to take responsibility for them and from them as you try to make them see the better way?

Whichever one you are for Merrill, I hope you are consistent. By the sounds of it, you're basically friend-mancing her and trusting her to make the right choice. Well... so be it. Enjoy it, witness it, and don't doubt. No matter what happens, watch and let her take responsibility for the consequences of her actions. Don't take it from her unless you intend to rival her, lest you deny her her accomplishments.

I think, if you can keep that consistency, you'll better appreciate her story.

Great post, Dean. How is your new file treating you thus far? Since you're behind me you run zero risk of spoiling me, so I get the rare opportunity to ask such a question!

Speaking of college affording further free time, my only Tuesday class was cancelled so aside from various non-school responsibilities I wound up with a chance today after all. In fact, I had a few hours. So the warp speed continued. (For what it's worth I worked full-time for a few years so I know how that gets in the way of things like living sometimes...) :P

I don't want to spoil anything for the update I'll work on throughout the first half of my tomorrow but I will tell you all how far I've progressed.

I'm at the start of Act 3.

And uh, wow. That was a hell of a finish there with Act 2.

Oh OK, I will spoil one little thing, since I know it was a big deal earlier today. Looks like there'll be no Merrilmance this file due to mechanical barriers. But not all is lost: seems Garrett's skin-deep flirtations with Isabella have paid off after all. So the bachelor continues to follow her port-of-call as the winds blow. If you know what I mean.

'Cause I kinda don't.

But yes, lots of ground to cover tomorrow. Very excited to cover it too. I just know I'll be here texting it all up for far too long on a school night if I try to pull it off now though.

Ack one more thing I can't refrain from saying tonight.

HAIL THE CHAMPION BABY

A word of warning for act 3. The end game kinda creeps up on you, so keep this in mind when doing side quests lest you inadvertently slip past the point of no return.

The DLCs can be done after you've completed the main game (though they chronologcally take place before the end game). If you want to play it safe with MotA, you can do it last.

Thanks man.

Do you know if creating a separate save file when I jump into MotA would help? I really, really want it all to flow chronologically my first time but I would obviously kick myself hard if I doomed poor Garrett to join the rest of his family before the end too.

I have no idea about PS3 as I play on 360 myself and that version has no problems for MotA.

I'm monitoring this thread... at least things worked out with Isabela. Or have thus far, anyway.
