Dragon Age seems to stick to "traditional" (earth) medieval lore, they like to borrow straight from medieval texts of the time.

If so, there's nothing more 'traditional' (if fantastical, like dragons) than mermaids/merfolk.

BTW, in most medieval tales - or heck, in Splash, or Disney's Little Mermaid, the problem of going out of the water seems to be solved by their fishtails turning into legs once they are on land (and apparently they are capable of breathing air.)

My point exactly. We've seen new lore get added to the game before; like nobody knew Wyverns existed before MotA. The biggest difference here would be the merfolk have entire oceans to hide in (which land-based races have no real means of exploring.)

Get creative like they have legs to travel on land and merfolk is possible.

It'd be interesting to see a take on merfolk within a video game. I can't think of many that have featured them as an actual race before.

Well, a mermaid would be nothing special on land. I wouldn't add them as a race unless they are planning on adding swimming, water entry/water physics, underwater environments, etc. Frostbite could be opening all that up (though I don't think they're doing it in DA 3).

The Dragon Age franchise already has a different race that Bioware isn't exploiting sufficiently. The talking darkspawn like the Architect, plus those like The Lost, The Withered, The Messenger, etc.(from Awakening) would bring an entirely new dynamic into these games if the player-character could be that option. Doing this would avoid exploiting similarities to other games reptilian and felinoid races.

That being said, I would not mind having a chance to adventure as one of those cursed werewolves from Origins, and for something completely new, a type of simian or apelike human/caveman race.

A frog people.
Or a race like the spriggan from elder scrolls.

Like the Lady of the forest? I can dig it. maybe a cross between her, sylvans, and the grand oak (with a little less rhyming.)

I'd prefer if the human cultures were developed more. They can be more alien than you think.

Failing that, I've always had a weak spot for centaurs (not necessarily with a horse body) and satyrs :)

I do not mind if they introduce new races as long as:

1.) They don't botch their introduction
2.) They don't bring furry enthusiasts to the forum

I'll take a page from Greek mythology and suggest a siren-like creature. A Siren is basically a mermaid with a mesmerizing voice that leads ships astray, leading them to their eventual deaths on rocky coastlines or coral reefs. They were also known to attack ships for food. The siren-like creature would, at first, appear to be a beautiful/handsome woman/man, but, upon closer examination, would actually be quite terrifying. And ugly. I'd also like for them to have some sort of magical abilities, which would be their means of covering up their hideousness to attract unsuspecting prey.

I would love to walk into a tavern and hear some pirates tell tales of the deadly sirens off the coast of Llomerynn and how they lost three ships to the blasted things.

(EDIT: And they should be able to fly with some sort of wings.)

i prefer an intelligent non-humanoid race maybe an relative to the dragon and wyvern or one with magically origins like the Mabari.

Outside of that i would love to see a trickster race like the fay (midsummer night's dream) but i think that may be to close to the spirits or gods.

lastly i would like to see new and weird cultures, no point of have a race of dark elves if they act just like the dwarfs.

Maybe we need more civilizations and nations then we do races, have just a wider range of cultures to explore then what we already have without potentially breaking the lore.

Precisely. Bronies are already bad enough.

XD We need a race that's highly attuned with the fade. Quadrupedal, equine in apperance, cat like expressive faces, comes in a wide arrange of hues and tones, with flying rogues and horned mages and very sturdy warriors, ruled by a theocratic monarchy.

Just think of the roleplaying potential.

This.

Think it could be cool if they introduced a new human nation from north of the Donarks too.

Asians....

I agree that if or when a new race is introduced, it should have basis from the Asian cultures. Just like if they add another after that, it should have basis off the people of the Americas.

The Fex would be cool to see or maybe even play in the future, if they prove to be awesome.

@Star Fury: Well, current Thedas is obviously inspired by the medieval Europe, so I would like to see a version of the connecting of the world. Plus all ingame cultures are based at least partly on some real world ones, and those areas are the most available for the Dragon Age universe.

A rock.

Because why not.

I'm about as interested in a new race as I'm interested in catching a flue.

Any new race would be a re-hash/re-thread that will basicly be another race. There is a limit to how many things you can add and still keep fresh. And antrophomorphic races are a dime a dozen.

Quick, we need KUNG-FU PANDAS. SAMURAI CATS. RUSSIAN BEARS.

brilliant-crazy-image.png

And adding new races just because you can...it can get silly to have so many different races anyway.

Something we haven't seen countless renditions of. Not another Elf race. Not another short race. Not another tall race. Not another Human crossed with Animal race. How about a truly original species, built from the ground up to be something truly different from the usual fantasy/sci-fi races, with little to nothing Human about them visually, biologically, idealogically and otherwise.

Just want to share...these are some of my people traditional attire/clothing...so if there is any of "Asians" race in Thedas, i would love to see something like these rather than the common Japanese or Chinese...

Peninsular Malay

Borneo Malay

Minangkabau Malay *

* Minangkabau women is dominant in Pepatih culture, they wear bull horn headress because of the legend. There was a dragon attacking a village, all Minangkabau warriors defeated fighting that dragon, but a female bull come out and defeat the dragon. Since then women are respected highly in Minangkabau people because the bull is female and manage to do what men warriors can't do that is to defeat the dragon. And Minangkabau women wear bull horn headress as a symbol

Edit : Is the picture too big? Sorry

I not long ago watched two parts of Kingdom of War (I still need to get around to watching the third), the visual elements were quite refreshing. Their clothing, armor and architecture was truly stunning. If we were to see another Human culture I too would much rather see something different, along the lines of Siam, or anything you mentioned. It would be quite interesting visually.

Some kind of insect people, preferrably a race of humanoid spiders. I've always wanted to play as something like this, but no game has ever given me the option...

I think Malay women dresses is suitable for female Mage robes in DA:I....isn't it?

Well considering what Vivienne wears as her headpiece, It wouldn't be too far fetched ;)
