To be honest, its because there isn't really a compelling reason to play as anything else. I never really feel like I'm playing from a non human perspective when I play as a nonhuman. Really, whenever I play as something else I feel like I'm playing as a limited human. Elves don't have beards, dwarves are short, and the race that seems the most different, the qunari, is one that we haven't received an opportunity to play. To make things worse, every race is pretty much treated the same. There isn't much difference in the dialog if you choose to play as a nonhuman. Other than cool moments like being rejected the crown or going through the stories at the beginning, it just feels like another play through, and if I'm going to play through again, I'd rather create a character with the most flexible creation options if its not going to make a difference anyways. Now in mass effect? I'd have fun with that.

Technically, "humans", elves, dwarves, and (probably) qunari are all human, as in they are biologically the same species. What really sets them apart is culture and ethnicity, nothing that doesn't already divide humans among themselves both in the real world and in fictional universes. Choosing between human or elf in DA isn't really different from choosing between Almain and Varani in Kingdoms of Amalur or between Imperial, Nord, and Breton in Skyrim.

I consider myself a heavy roleplayer, and I always default to human. I'm quite comfortable being so, and I do enjoy it. I guess I prefer them in DA because I find them to have the most interesting lore and they are the ones officially recognized as "humans" within the game. Which again, I insist is a term I don't like in this context and would much rather fantasy settings called them something else that sounded less scientific and less inaccurate. Even somethig like Tolkien's "men" would be preferable.

On the other had, the thing I explained at the beggining means I have no problem playing other races, and in two out of my three DAO playthroughs that's what I did. I do this to experience everything the game has to offer, and because playing the same backgrounds over and over again gets old fast. Not to mention the Human Noble origin felt a little lacking compared to the others. I don't refer to the plot or the effects it had on the main game, but rather to how the other origin sequences felt much more dynamic.

I must point out that I have absolutely no interest in playing as anythin other than human in, say, ME. The reason I do in DA is because the races there could all be considered and called human in the first place.

I usualy play human female mage.At this point it's almost some kind of ritual.
I'd play dwarf but sadly no magic.
The idea of female elf annoys me to no end ,the whole frail , gracious and beautiful ...(I'd play a Sera though, I love her haircut)
And now we have qunari , too tall for me.

Then I will probably play a male rogue human or elf (I really like the derp face of the elf Inquisitor), depending on their background. Not fond of nobles.

If it's possible to play a Vashoth with a very dry sense of humor like Sten , I'll try male qunari Warrior.

Edit: Think I got confused with the "Deciding on races" thread.

Well, I like creating and playing the game as myself so I go with human. But I do like the origins of both the City Elf and the Dwarven Noble.

I like to choose all races but at the same time I tend to favor the elf over the rest because I find them interesting.

I think the lack of played non-human races are three fold:
-Humans are the default and some doesn't care to change it
-Easier to picture yourself as the hero if it looks like you
-Some doesn't like dwarves, some doesnt like elves. But I don't think anyone dislikes humans

Humanity is the superior race in Thedas, most populus, Wide Spread and Has within it the most power in the continent.
So i'd agrue its as simple as just going with the winning side.

Well, there's that, too. Elves and dwarfs are rather old, dying races, with the former being doomed to dissapear due to genetic weakness  and the latter because of hordes of murderous darkspawn paired with low fertility rates. Humans and qunari have come to rule Thedas since they arrived no so long ago, and it looks like they're here to stay.

Also a fourth reason I think is the Human Noble has more impact than any other origin, since they can become King or Queen.

Personally, I'm the opposite. Only about 20% of my Origins playthroughs were playing as a human.

In a fantasy game, I want to be a nonhuman, lol. I feel that humans practically dominate every single element... look at Mass Effect... humans are more special than asari, or turians that have been around for thousands of years?

I'm always a wood elf or a high elf in the elder scrolls, a dwarf or an elf in dragon age, if I played LOTRO I'd pick a hobbit, and since I'm possibly gonna sub for a while in SWTOR, I'll pick a miraluka or a cathar character asap

There are no non-human races. They're all just humans with slightly different cosmetic appearances and stat modifiers. Sometimes the writers give them some cultural differences which are no different then cultural differences that exist in human cultures. They're all bipeds with 10 fingered hands and opposable thumbs. Having a different physical form would completely change our perspective. Most humans can't imagine or create a race with a non-human mindset. There are no real differences.

With luck, we'll be able to knock the humans off their pedestal in DAI.

Probably the "Rulers of all of Thedas" pedestal.

Humans and elves can have reproductively capable offspring, i.e. they're the same species biologically. Don't worry.

What pedestal?

The one Gwydden mentioned.

I should probably mention that by "humans," I mostly mean Orlais. But it mostly comes from a very strong dislike of the idea that nonhumans are in inexorable decline.

Elf and any other race can have reproductively capable offspring, not just elves and humans.

Interesting. So Sandal can have children?

If the low fertility doesn't have its way, it's possible.

Is there any evidence to suggest he can't? In fact, is there any evidence he is an elf-blooded dwarf?

What's the appeal of humans? Humans are the superior species.

Simple as that.

Existing?

I realize your fantasies come and go, but the only way to knock Humans off that 'pedastal' is a good heaping of massive genocide.

And this is the fault of a species on the basis of being a species because...?
