For me it's mostly technical; I'd be happy with fantasy or sci-fi as long as roleplaying elements abounded.
- Open world sandbox like Elder Scrolls
- Seamless map transitions like Ultima IX
- Morality-wise, the classic good-neutral-evil paths through the game
- Story-wise, additional divergent paths through the game, with endings properly reflecting my chosen path. Accurate epilogue cards would be acceptable.
- Full control over character creation with all reasonable builds viable (ie anything generated by random roll or point buying).
- Meaningful and balanced skills/feats/spells/weapons. Single target not less important than AOE.
- Moderate and meaningful loot with spacious storage space/backpack to avoid the Inventory mini-game.
- Configurable length of day/night cycle, from real time up.
Usually I take games close to this and modify them to be more like it (Skyrim, etc.). Lore is variable and not that important to me, though it should be a good story that holds my interest at the very least.
