I'm a woman, and I didn't buy Alpha Protocol for precisely this reason.  I didn't buy The Witcher 2, either.  I blew it on the first one because it didn't even occur to me that I wouldn't be able to play as woman in a RPG.  (BioWare spoiled me, evidently.)  I learned my lesson.  Now I check before buying.  If I can't play a girl, I don't play.

Same! I always get pretty annoyed if I can't play as a girl, myself.

I think it will be released this year. Mark Darrah has stated on bioware blog that the main storyline is completed from beginning to the end with the holiday build. That means now it's more about the other aspects of the game like gameplay, graphics, music and voices. The writing takes the bulk of the time.

Oh gosh, I hope so. I can only imagine how much it would physically hurt to see it delayed until further notice or 2015. It's really exciting to know the main storyline is completed. I never knew the writing took the most time, I always assume gameplay/graphics did.

Nothing has been released on voice actors yet, right?

I recently read an article on Gameinformer that the Next Middle Earth game, while still cross gen, will have a very limited AI on last gen systems. Though I've been assured it isn't the case for DA:I, given how there appears to be a well motivated drive to create a deeply varied set of enemies with both very distinct and often interlocking methods of attack, I still wonder how well the last gen systems will hold up under the strain.

While I do wish we had more info, I get the feeling that's coming soon enough.  If they have to delay the game to next year, it'll probably be early 2015.  Let's hope that doesn't happen, because it would hurt sales--people don't have as much money to spend right after Christmas.

Ideally it will be out a month or two before Christmas, so that they can get the pre-Christmas sales boost.  With any luck, 2014 will be as good a year for games as 2010 was.  The last few years haven't had as many games I, personally, have been interested in--aside from the handful of indie games.  But most of those, due to budget restrictions etc., are more casual.

Nothing I've seen or heard suggests that Bioware is off target on DAI's time frame.  They may end up cutting some last-minute unpolished content to make the date, but at that point it shouldn't be anything related to the main quest line.  I think they learned their lesson about getting the ending done right and on time, and not rushing the main part of the game.  Bioware isn't Bethesda:  we'll most likely be more interested in the main storyline than in side quests.

And if Bioware ends up in competition with Witcher 3?  I will buy Inquisition first and grab Witcher 3 when it's on sale.  Like previous posters, I'm not as eager to pick up a game that doesn't let me play as a woman--it usually means that the game will be heavily "masculinized," in other words a lot of oversexualizing females for the male audience.  That's not something I'm a fan of.  Although I own both Witcher games, I have never played the second and barely done anything with the first, due to the way it treats women.  Does every lady ever have to throw herself at him?  And are the nude card "trophies" necessary at all?  I think not on both...

If EA does delay DA:I, though, they do have games they can fall back on.  They will probably have expansions or in-game purchases for Titanfall by then, for one thing.  They are also intending to release the Sims 4 toward the end of the year--and the Sims has always been a huge seller, if not EA's best seller.  Much like DA:I, there hasn't been too much information released about Sims 4 either.  That said if either game gets delayed, I'd be more inclined to say DAI would release on time than Sims 4.

It was already delayed an entire year. I seriously doubt it will get delayed again.

I wouldn't mind too much if it was pushed back another year as long as it ensured that the game we got was the best of DA2 and DAO combined and then some.

What a friendly bunch.  Everyone willing to wait so long.  Though, when it comes down to it, it comes out when it comes out.  Deadlines are real.  I'll have to say I wouldn't want to rush the DA team into anything, but I really hope this game sees the light of day real soon.  From what I've seen in the posts by the Bioware crew it seems fall is the right time.  Fingers crossed till then.

I doubt BW wants to release DA:I anywhere near TW3, though if they both came out at the same time I would buy both.

No offense, but I doubt that EA is ever considering TW3 at all for releasing DAI. The truth is, TW1 and TW2 just broke 6 million copies sold, combined, total for 2 games, over the past 5+ years. I love CDPR and The Witcher series, but they are a small, relatively unknown and niche franchise compared to Dragon Age and Bioware. A single Bioware game will sell about as many copies as everything CDPR has published since it was founded.

Since TW3 has been delayed I really hope DAI doesnt as well. I crave a good rpg, and dark souls is not my kinda game.

But I am optimistic that it will be released this fall :)

Didn't Dragon Age II only sell about 2 million in its first week, and about 3 million lifetime sales.  Bioware games aren't exactly 10 million sellers.  Of course, all of those sale figures also don't take into account used game sales either I believe.

CDProjekt RED owns Good Old Games. Despite being much smaller than EA, they're able to provide the Witcher series with a budget comparable to other AAA RPGs.

While not an Elder Scrolls game, the Witcher III is expected to be a popular enough game to compete with Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Well, Dragon Age has Varric. What does Witcher have? Naked chicks? ... <_< Forget I said anything.

As well they shouldn't, since the publisher/developer get nothing when that happens.

Personally I hope it doesn't get delayed again. I've been getting rather antsy. Lack of information is annoying, but I accept it since I would rather minimize spoilers before the games comes out. I would like to be able to pre-order it sometime in the foreseeable future, though.
