I just hate games with save points.  In my younger gaming days I'm sure it wouldn't bother me as much but I tend to have a bit of short attention span compared to years past.

A person on my xbox friends list recommended dark souls because it was on sale ultra cheap. Since I had money in my account I bought it, fired it up.  Looks interesting, promising, then the message pops up 'this game has save points do not turn off...etc etc,.' and my heart sinks.

In every game you meet small choke points that are difficult and so you die, get tossed back to some earlier part, have to go through a part of a level, you die, go back to a save point.....etc.

I ditched Red Dead Redemeption for that very reason.  (And in this game they repopulate critters after you rest at a fire which sucks as well.)    I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I just hate save point games.  There, I feel better now.  :P

Dark souls doesn't have save points it auto saves. But yes save points suck I remember being sent back hours due to them.

What is the difference?  Does it sutosave every so many minutes?  If it autosaves only at certain spots then that is a save point is it not?

What alternative do you prefer? The more static Save/Load screen? Or the straight "you die, now start the game over" type of situation?

The difference is that the save is automatic. Meaning you don't have to go out of your way to save. Possibly ignoring a save and losing hours of progress.

When it comes to RPGs -- I definitely prefer the manual saving function as opposed to automatic saving (in fact automatic is annoying) especially when that's all the game's got going like Infinite or Shadowrun Returns. Checkpoint saving just adds unnecessary frustration, not challenge, just an annoyance. It's nice enough to have, on the side, but it can also be an annoyance like in Jak 2 or the games mentioned above.

Pretty much every time you kill an enemy.

I don't know how you can ditch a game because of "saving", but... sure.

BioWare style. I want to save when ever I want outside of combat.  If I want to take 3 steps and save and then save again I want to do that.

Never a problem for me as I save serially.  All I know is that if I save myself I know where i am going to end up if i croak and I can then save just before a very tough area.  When I died in my 1st play of DS, I reload into a room I had been in before.....have I gotten the key i need to get to the next door?  Which way do i go out of this big room?

For certain games, that would break certain "immersion" for what the developers were trying to express and achieve through their game though - I personally don't care either way, but that's just me.

I've come to prefer the way Dark Souls handles save points. Manual saves have become a bit of a crutch for me.

That said, it largely depends on the game in question.

Why'd you even cut the game on if you really just wanted to play for thirty seconds?

Checkpoints (Dark Souls fires) =/= Save points
Wut r u? Casul?
But seriously you're a casual.
Dark Souls is a game I adore as, From Software could've made the game more accessible than Demon souls (Which didn't have any fires, one death and you're at the stages beginning) but didnt. It's a game that doesn't compromise for you. YOU have to put on your big boy pants and be a man. Not a pansy.
In other words,
Git gud Scrub.

Now that is some duck if there was two of them would it be a 'paradox'?

I agree, as I said I'm sure I am in the minority and in my younger gaming days it would be no problem at all.  I acknowledge I'm in the vast minority here.

All true comments and I'm sure after I get to a certain point I'll be okay with it.  I just vastly prefer to save when i want outside of combat and cutscenes.
