I'm not keen on white flashy websites (I have a youtube darkness app) and was wondering if there is a setting to make the website darker in tone?
Thanks.

The dark skin is live! You can toggle it in the bottom left hand corner in "Change Theme".

You can change the active background picture with the "paintbrush" icon in the upper right, just above this thread - that should give you some more options, but I don't know of any specific "all dark" option.
The team is definitely aware of the request for more varied themes - I can't commit to anything for timelines, or if we'll do it, but it's definitely on the radar as a heavily requested item.
Our designer is currently working on a darker forum skin that can be toggled at the bottom left hand corner where it says "Change Theme". The current theme will still be the default theme, but this way our players will have the ability to customize not only the background, but choose a darker theme against a lighter font.
We are also aware of some users who have issues with lag. We are working on a customization option that will likely remove the background and replace it with a color of your choosing as it seems the lag is largely caused by scrolling for those with slower computers or internet speeds.
Just so that I set expectations, the new alternate skin will not be black or that level of darkness. However, our designer has taken eye strain into consideration and is working on a suitable skin with that in mind.
The 3 backgrounds you guys are referencing is the addition of "no image background" options that we have added that is unrelated to the darker forum skin. That change is for users who have computers or internet speeds that are having lag issues with the background image, so they can remove the background image all together and have a solid color (we'll be adding more colors to choose from).
The main site text area as well as what was formerly white at the bottom of the screen on the 6 default background images has been changed to a light shade of grey.
We are still iterating and approving the darker alternate skin for roll out as soon as we can get it to you ![]()
But why is the rum gone?
No, really, why is the font bigger all of a sudden?
Because our designer listens to feedback
Who's idea was the blinding white anyway???
1. If you want to blame someone, you can blame me since I led the development of the new social.bw and forum.bw sites.
2. Many of our users like it, and websites like Google, Facebook, Wikipedia and Twitter all use white as prominent backgrounds. I'm happy offer an alternative and implement a darker skin for users with that preference, but it's definitely not out of the ordinary for sites (including many modern forums) to use light colors in web design.
3. Please, consider rephrasing your future comments more politely.
Hey guys,
I am definitely not upset about constructive criticism. I just wanted to remind that politeness is appreciated, and I think for the most part, everyone has been very patient and courteous about communicating their feedback and requests for features and improvements. This is a site for you and for us, so I want to make everyone (that's never completely possible, but as much as I can) happy.
Thank you vania z, we are looking into implementing something along those lines to compliment the darker alternate skin (and possibly just as a stand alone for people who still want the lighter foreground but might want a darker background).
MittelBienchen2, I'm glad that the increase in font (and likely the slight darkening from white to light grey) has made your experience better and you are reconsidering the current design.
Sanunes, it's totally ok if you can't always articulate why you don't like something Sometimes it's enough to say "I can't tell you exactly why, but I know this doesn't feel right to me and it negatively affects my experience." I have professionals and experts who are here to tell me why you might be feeling the way you are, and based on my own experience, I have some ideas too.
What a lot of people out there won't do is admit when something isn't perfect. That's not the case here. Everything is a learning experience and I believe that fandom is a two-way street. You guys make game development possible, so it's up to us to make your time with us a great one. We won't always agree, and I won't always give you what you want... but I will always work with you when I can and admit when I'm not perfect ![]()
Jessica you are single-handedly making me question my boycott of Biower
Hmm? I'm unclear on what you mean. What I do is making you want to boycott or making you re-consider a previous boycott?

To answer previous questions/comments as I recall them.
*No, I didn't "copy" anything. I was stating that there are many other sites out there using light designs. There are a million sites using dark designs. This is what we went with partially based on the survey we conducted, and again, based on feedback, we're working on a darker alternative. The BioWare Blog is also a few years old and we've recently updated bioware.com so you can expect we'll update the blog at some point in the future too. When that happens, I'll keep in mind what I've learned from launching the Forum.
*I can completely understand wanting to use a skin/theme that was designed by and released by BioWare as opposed to modding something yourself and the "feelings" that come with that. Modding is totally fine too. To each his/her own. It's definitely something that is difficult to put into words. I speak a little bit of German myself but put the text into Google translate -- I think it came out pretty well for those of you who want to read it - no need to make a separate thread in the Deutsche forum just for this. Anyway, I thought that was really poignant. Your post reminded me of an Apple ad: The Think Different Campaign.
(I've been learning how to become a producer for the past year+ to do things like lead the development of the Forum, social.bw and other online projects, so among other things, I read the Steve Jobs biography which I found incredibly insightful).
I hope that certain aspects of the design are resonating with you. My goal was to use concept art and lithographs instead of in-game screenshots/renders because I wanted a behind-the-scenes feeling and a more raw experience than the finished work you see in our marketing, to tie back to what we want to accomplish in Our Philosophy. For me, when I read MittelBienchen2's post, I understood because even subconsciously, there's a feeling attempting to be conveyed.
Is it perfect? No, most things rarely are. But I'm learning and I have a really amazing team that supports learning and post-launch development, so we'll keep listening to that feedback. (wow was that my first tiniest dev diary? I think so lol).
It's still coming along. We are juggling a few tasks right now, but I assure you, this is a top priority ![]()
