I think I noticed something

While there are many other reasons for hating these enemies, think about the Reapers. Almost everyone considers them the easiest faction. Why? Their attacks are well telegraphed, aside from the Marauders. You can hear Banshees, Cannibals, and Brutes from across the map. The Ravager's blue beams stand out on every map. You can usually hear Husks breathing... usually.
Now think about the aforementioned hated enemies. Phantoms make relatively little noise until they get in close, especially when compared to the rest of their teammates. Dragoons are much the same way, provided they don't start hosing you down from a distance. The Geth are pretty quiet, with the exception of the Troopers, Rocket Troopers, and Primes. The Hunters, Pyros, and Bombers make very little noise until, much like the Phantoms, they get in close, making their attacks poorly telegraphed. Collector Captains are relatively silent, especially with Scions and Praetorians blasting your position.
My point: Most of the most despised enemies in this game seem to be near silent, until they get in close, leaving us with little time to anticipate and counter their attacks. In short, we don't see, or in this case hear, them coming. Just a little something I thought about during my Platinum pugging.

That... is not inaccurate.

Well Phantom were pretty much designed to sneak up on you, that's what they do. Dragoons were supposed to sound like an oncoming train though, but they were too buggy so they cut out thier audio. Rippaz are all about the zerg rush so they were purposefully made to sound like a pack of dogs so you always know where they're coming from.

People hate stagger and stun, and whatever recently did that to them is the unit they hate the most.

Out of the Rippaz, only the Banshee makes sound from far away.

Unless it's the Geth Primes. Those are hated forever.

Husks and Brutes make lots of noise far away. I can hear them while standing near the LZ all the time. ![]()

I can't argue with that observation Q.
I do tend to abuse my headset for situational awareness, I can recognise the sound of a turret being set up from halfway across most maps.
The number of times a dragoon or a hunter has sneaked up behind me while I was scoped in on some hapless head-shot fodder must be massive by now.
As is the number of ops packs, med-gels, and missiles I've wasted as a result.

I am very sure that Brutes will grunt from far away. Or at least they do at the start of a new wave.

I think OP might have a point. Which makes me think I shouldn't rely as much on sound.

I actually play with little or no sound, and Banshee's are the only enemy I hear. I didn't realize literally no one besides me would know that...

I hate Primes way less when Combat Drone does nothing but looking pretty.

Phantom actually makes tons of noise, and a very distinctive noise at that.
The hated enemies all possess some combination of stagger, huge spike damage, sync kill and bugged or unfair mechanics. I don't think the level of sound they make is a very big causal factor.

Glacier Hazard becomes extra-fun when your sound glitches and everything -- including the giant seeker swarm -- becomes completely silent.

You do not hear anything at the start of a new wave even at low volume? I definitely hear some Reaper unit grunt at the start of a new wave. You are correct about the Banshees.

IMO, anything that has armor should be making a sound as they approach. This is the number one thing I hate about Dragoons and even Pyros. I like others do use my headset to be immersed in the game and having things that are silent hurts the experience. Not that much since I put in so much time on this game mind you.

Phantoms do make noise. But sometimes those Preatorians are really, really silent when they are in the air, until they land of course

I hear the whole battlefield even when I have my beats on with rap and dubstep blaring at 100% volume.

The more glaring problem is that (on platinum) when you are engaging a couple of banshees and an atlas, its almost impossible to hear anything else apart from the banshee screams or their teleporting sound and the atlases clanking walking/shooting sound.
Throw in a geth prime into the mix(lol is it possible to have all those bosses at once? Never actually observed wave compositions.), it becomes very hard to hear a stray phantom/geth hunter/pyro/any silent enemy sneak upon us as we engage those enemies. And thats the problem there i think.

Maybe. But I play on mute 50% of the time and I still despise Phantoms and Collectors. Phantoms because they always seem to be around the corner waiting to sync, and Collectors because Collectors are just attrocious at times. Geth are just meh and the Dragoons can be neutralized rather quickly, they're just fast.

Out of those only dragoons are truly silent though, I hear Phantoms very well all the time. Their palm gun has very distinct sound, I hear engineers setting up turrets and geth screeching and all that, so for me sound or lack of is not really problem. What I have problem with is their speed and aggression (Phantoms and Dragoons) and stun(Geth).
