Any gay gaming related news can be discussed here!

Here's a recent article that really made me excited: (WARNING: Spoilers for The Last of Us)

Pretty interesting article about LGBT protagonists in games!

What do you think? Is this method a good thing?

I've always liked Aveline for her role as the sole female Assassin. Now, I think I love her even more.

I like that they're allowing us to headcanon her sexuality as well as what she thinks of her gender. It definitely gives everyone a more unique playthrough. I do like that but I also wanna see some straight-up (Lol) gay/lesbian characters.

And I didn't read The Last of Us article, as I really want to avoid spoilers until I can play the game. >_> <_<

I agree! However, part of me thinks the whole "leaving it up to interpretation" technique is just there because developers are afraid to acknowledge someone might be gay/lesbian due to perceived reactions from fans. But that's probably just the cynicism talking :P

Assassin's Creed, especially AC 3, has always kind of been pro-gay. In AC 1, there was a gay assassination target and, of course, Da Vinci with Ezio approving of his relationship with his assistant! In AC 3, the brit, I forget his name, pointed out the homophobia of Thomas Jefferson, which blew my mind for some reason. I guess I never thought about the founding father's views before xD.

Ya, I knew I should probably put the spoiler warning! I know how some people are here about spoilers xD I hope you get to play it soon! It's amazing!

I do feel that same sense of cynicism. xD But eh, it's still a lot better than other games and I can appreciate that little. I definitely want more, though. Like, an amazing game with a PC that just happens to be gay and there's no way to change it. I can already feel the praise, the tears, and the rage, haha. It would be glorious.

I wish I had gotten more into the the AC series. >_> I just can't get excited about it, tbh. However, that's awesome of Ubisoft to do that. If only games that I really like, say Fire Emblem: Awakening or Dynasty Warriors or Pokemon, didn't just avoid the topic of being gay.

Thank you for that! I am such a zombie fan (TWD, tho) so the hype for it made it terrible, considering I'm a 360 gamer. However, when I get my PS4... :D

OMG TWD is the best freaking thing ever and definitely my favorite show and I loved the game!

Speaking of LGBT protagonists, another article came out today: "Video games won't feature gay protagonists 'for a while,' says Far Cry 3 writer Lucien Soulban".

Kind of depressing but I know within the next 10 or even 5 years we'll have one. I have a lot of hope for that. And I think the most likely way we'll get him/her is exactly how you said. Someone who happens to be gay. I think that's the best option. Give players a well-written character and story, they won't care who they're sleeping with. Well, some absolutely will but they will be the minority.

I loved the AC series since the first AC- mostly because of the combat and story but also Desmond was freaking CUTE! They totally screwed him up with Brotherhood with the new engine :( So sad... I haven't played Black Flag yet because I don't see how they could make another one after AC3's ending. But SPOILERS! So I'll stop xD

I really love seeing/running across LGBT characters when I play games, it makes me happy :) and playing as one makes it even better! That's why I love RPG's and Bioware so much! I wish it wasn't such a god damn big deal :/

Michonne has stolen my heart, as did Glenn and Andrea. (Sad-face) I am really glad they included a LGBT character, though, I'd like to see more kinds of people than the usual straight white folk. LIKE WHERE ARE MY FELLOW ASIANS? (I've lived in Georgia for a few years. There are hella Asians and one part, where my mom lives, is like a Koreantown...) He shouldn't be the cast's only Asian. At least he's Korean. #KoreanPride

That kinda makes me sad but visible progress has been in the works so my hopes are still up that it will come sooner than later. And exactly! So many people argue against people being LGBT/PoC because they feel that chars will be different just for the sake of being different. Nah man, just make the character happen to be LGBT and not white. I mean, sometimes, it actually doesn't really affect one all that much if they aren't the generic straight white male.

He was hella ugly in AC3, imo. >_> I can't get into the combat or story, doeeee. I have done a few ACRPs and those were hella fun.

Me too! It just makes me feel all fuzzy when a main char, especially one I love, just happens to be an LGBT char. Hence, I looooove Bioware. (Fable II + III did this hella coolly too.) But yeah, I wish people wouldn't be so against chars who go against the common things. (Like I said before, straight and white)

Michonne is my FAVORITE! Her and Daryl, of course. They're just bad asses! I actually really liked Andrea :( none of my friends did xD I know how you feel. It took four damn seasons to get a gay character in there. There's a BIT of racial diversity in the cast but I see what you mean! It'd be nice to see a broader range.

I really loved Fable. I love how nonchalant the sexuality of the game was. Still, though, I kinda didn't like how we were forced to have the opposite sex LI in the beginning of Fable III.

Ya, I think it'll take a bit before it's widely accepted but I think it'll happen sooner or later. I think a lot of people still think the typical gaming audience is selfish or self-interested and unable to tolerate change or something new. I'm willing to give us the benefit of the doubt, however. I think it's just a very vocal minority that's making developers hesitant- but then you have companies like EA, Bioware, Ubisoft, Naughty Dog, and others who just don't give a damn! Which I can never thank them enough for!

I think games would greatly benefit from exploring other identities than the straight white male. I'm excited to see that become the norm. We just have to get there! :D

MICHONNE IS PRECIOUS. I feel the same way about Andrea. xD However, I really don't get all of the hype about Daryl. I like him, doe. I hope they just continue to improve as time goes on, tbh. Finally, we have an LGBT character, doeee. Took 'em long enough. Now let's have more than the token lesbian, token Asian, token Hispanic, etc.

I definitely loved that about the game, among other aspects of just freedom. (Changing clothes, hair, etc.) I didn't like that either. I also didn't like that we were forced to be a white noble. Why not black? Or tan? Eh, probably looking too much into it but still...

If they think that, somewhat, they are correct. >_> The most vocal, I've seen, are those ardently against change. However, like you said, they're the minority. Most don't even care. (Though, APATHY IS DEATH) Soon, though, they'll just have to shh and accept change because it's coming! And yasss, I love the strides they're making for equality, in abolishing the norm of the straight white male. That kind of thing just makes me happy.

AVELINE. Even though I kinda dislike the AC games, I really want to play the one she stars in.

YES SHE IS!!! I LOVE HER!! I'm not obsessed with Daryl but I do like him a lot. I think a lot of times the lack of diversity is unintentional, both with tv shows and video games- it's just something they didn't think about. I think that's changing now that LGBT people, our allies as well as racial minorities, are becoming more vocal about wanting that content and that diversity. Nowadays, I think when there isn't that content there it's glaring. It's something people notice.

See, I didn't see a problem as playing a white nobleman as I'm white. It never crossed my mind that someone would have a problem with that. But I don't generally care what race I play as long as I like the character. I think that relates to what I just mentioned. People have to be consciously aware of diversity or else there wouldn't be any.

Whether or not they fear change is irrelevant because things are changing whether they like it or not. What's amazing is what the gaming industry is doing and the entertainment industry in general is doing, while slowly, is saying to the public you either change with us or you get left behind. We're moving into the 21st century.

BTW: Here's an article that contains several responses to the article I posted earlier about gay main characters in video games that seems to echo my belief that we'll see gay main characters soon!

So it seems like we're not going away! There have been many articles in the past month about us LGBT's in video games. No doubt a result of the new Last of Us DLC. Another one went up on IGN today by Luke Karmali..
