Depends on how you roleplay and how you want to battle the archdemon, I guess. If you roleplay a really nice character you'll probably want to let the mages live, but if your character's a bit meaner you could side with the templars.

As for the final battle, the templars are good melee fighters, but they lack ranged attacks. You'll want at least one ranged army, since the archdemon likes to sit in a spot where melee attacks can't reach him. So if you don't have the elf army you might pick the mages. The mages are also good, but they tend to cluster together, which makes them vulnerable to the archdemon's attacks and there's also the chance they kill more allies than enemies with friendly fire.

Just to point out, in my first playthrough to fight the Archdemon last night, I noticed that my Templars definitely had ranged attacks. In fact, during the final part of the battle just before my AW Mage went toe-to-toe with the Archdemon I had a group of templars all clustered around Leliana loosening off arrow after arrow at the Archdemon.

And in response to the OP, my Mage also killed Connor and sided with the Templars, so I don't see that it's a particular problem. Image IPB

I found that the mages were better allies, you get the same amount of mages as templars and the mages have better ranged talents.

I preferred the mages. In fact, I chose mages and elves - they are the only two ranged allies you get. All the others are melee. Melee is great in the city itself, but I prefer ranged for the final battle against the archdemon.

Seriously, try and keep spoilers out of the topic titles?

If you side with the Templars, does Godwin (the mage in the closet) survive? Because if not, you miss out on a lot of money.

For real. "I killed the little boy Connor, you know, the one in Redcliffe Castle, the Arl's son, who looks like he hasn't been sleeping well, and his mom's all upset cause she knows he's possessed and offers to sacrifice herself in a blood ritual but I kill him anyway..."

^that's about the only way that subject woudl have gotten more spoiler-ific.

You know, it looked like there was space for 5 allies in the climax of the game on the UI, but I only had 4. Redcliffe, Templars, Werewolves and Dwarves.

I was hoping he would but he does not survive. I'm doing my first game where I sided with the templars and unfortunately, he dies unless you side with the mages. I was upset about it, too. I'm going to go back to siding with mages for now on. The only thing you can do is take the lyrium from the smuggler, which only sells for 12 gold and then you can pickpocket him for another 20. So, you miss out on like 40 gold or so by siding with the templars, ugh! I hate them! lol Does anyone know how to fight Greigor? If you can, I'm going to kill him next time for this! Didnt like him anyways.

That empty space is for the golems, which you get for killing Caridin in the Anvil of the Void. Just make sure Shale isnt in your party if you do kill him because he'll turn on you!

Golems have some ranged attack as well (Rock Hurl). I had one take out a whole bank of Hurlock Archers with a single rock in my Final Battle re-run tonight. Not denying that Elves and Mages might have the best ranged attack (I don't know 'cos I haven't used them yet) but I know for sure that Templars and Golems also have some form of missle fire power.

Your army choices between the two boil down to Magic or No Magic. That is, the Templars are just _another_ bunch of melee fighters to go with the Redcliffe troops, the Dwarves/Golems, and possibly the Werewolves. (If you went Werewolves, you gave up the Elves and their ranged weapons.)

I'd opt for diversity.
