Start with DA:O, try to avoid all possible spoilers. Especially for DA2.
It's hard to recommend the origin, though... Which classes and races do you like? What sort of play style do you prefer?
DAO borrowed much from NWN-like 'classics'. BW simplified things, but did not make the game too primitive and hack-n-slashy. You can progress within your chosen class in many ways, and there are many possible and viable party combinations.
Check out the mods for DA:O and DA2.
I'd honestly advice no mods on the first PT. Especially, no characters-related mods.
May be, UI-scaling could be useful (if playing on 1080+)
UI tweaks are important mods for current gen monitors.
The character creator has really bad lighting. Don't get too frustrated. That's my advice.
I love these games. Just have fun with it and take your time.

DA2 had zero issues with fonts and UI scaling (and I played it on 15'' laptop).
I had to use bigger fonts mod for DAO, but that depends a lot on a screen size. As I said - mine was 15'', I know that a friend of mine plays on her 23'' with no scaling mods installed.
The only really necessary mod for me was the white teeth mod. On the X-Box people looked fine but on PC everyone looks like they have wooden teeth. [shudders] Other than that, there isn't much you can do wrong as long as you click on everything at least once. ![]()
I was wondering if anybody here was thinking of playing a Qunari in DA:I. I see a lot of people on tumblr saying they are. Personally, I'm probably just gonna go human. I usually like races with horns, but I'm not that into them
Unless of course they have different stories, then I'll just play everyone.

Not me. I'm one of those who disliked the 'backgrounds--->races' change. I'd rather have an option to pick the human I like, than a preset no-background amnesiac dwarf.
I could possibly play an elf, but I will only know that for sure when I get to the CC.

It does not seem like that, the trailer suggested some sort of common background. Very likely, with some hints of amnesia. There will be race-sensitive moments, of course, but I think it's more cosmetic.
Amnesia? Seriously? Awe man, that rarely goes well. I really liked how DAO worked. It was pretty awesome. I wish they'd gone back to that. I'm just not looking forward to the whole "races" thing. I guess it makes things easier on them though.
Amnesia is so old school. I'm surprised they went with that.
I tried getting excited about the qunari, but it just ain't happening.
Amnesia? Seriously?
Well, may be not exactly, but how else can one interpret that episode with Cassandra? PC 'walks out of the Fade' in the middle of the Big Magic Sh!t and he obviously has no idea about what's going on, and that cool-looking glove seem to surprise him. Probably, that's just a trailer-specific scene, which is irrelevant. But I'm not building my hopes up.
A Chosen One with a weird world-saving SupaPower in his hand and memory issues? Does not sound too exciting for some reasons...
Well the trailer suggest they'll go amensia, Cassandra asking how he survive & the inquisitor seems to have no answer.
I think, when i get the game (not day one though, going to wait for some players opinion first) I think i'll go Human too. That was my choice in DA:O & DA II anyway ![]()
I really hope that they will alllow fan mods like the 2 others because I've heavily modded the 2 others :s
Hmm. Well maybe it'll turn out to be something different. That could be interesting.
I'm getting kinda excited about it. Hopefully it won't be pushed back. I just want the combat to be good. I'm probably in the minority, but I liked DAII's combat much better than DAO.
Roi!
I'm sure it can be modded. Bioware'd be stupid otherwise.

They no longer use their own engine (which had lasted since NWN1, by the way), and DA2 had never seen a toolset. From what we know, modding is problematic.
Maybe I'm not sure what y'all mean by modding. I thought there were a lot of DA2 mods floating around. But the new engine might be bad news.
I thought there were a lot of DA2 mods floating around.
There were, but DA2 had no native toolset (unlike NWN1 and DAO, which also belong to the same 'Aurora engine' family). DAO was deigned for the full modding - new modules, new dialogues, new locations, new items, characters etc. DA2 only allowed minor cosmetic and gameplay variations. Switching to the new engine (FrostBite, e.g. Battlefield 4) is complex enough as it is, I doubt making the game modding-friendly is on their top-priority list.
Ah, so like changing/adding missions and stuff like that?
Also, I just finished Masked Empire. I don't even know what to say. It was really slow at first. I didn't get into til about half way through, then I couldn't put it down. But I still loved it and hated it. I'd recommend it just for getting to see more of the DA world though.
Isn't it gonna be set in Orlais?
Anyway, has anybody else finished it?

Sadly I agree, unless generic FrostBite mod tools work and assuming such tools even exist at this time. I'd like to see DA I be mod friendly but I'm not going to plan on it.

I'm making a second attempt to read it. First time I could not get past first chapter. I remember that with Asunder it was just the opposite case, I uploaded it on my e-reader and opened it just to make sure the file works. I could not stop reading, because it had captured me from the first phrases.
Yeah, Masked Empire really sucked at the beginning. I'd say try to muddle through the first half. It was so boring, lol. I actually skimmed a lot of the beginning. I hated it. Orlais seems like a ridiculous place.
I loved Asunder most of the way through. Even though some parts near the end just seemed out of left field, I think it was definitely the better book.
Kunari!
Really? I can't believe y'all are so sure it's not gonna be moddable. I must be completely out of the loop.
I'm definitely not the top expert, when it comes to the English literature, but for some reasons I loved Gaider's 'Asunder' much more. Probably, it's something about the language, or something about the style. I doubt I can express that. As a non-native speaker, 'Asunder; seemed rather complex to me. I mean compared to the ME novels (I could read those barely using a dictionary, they were so simple...not to say primitive). It was also a huge improvement comparing to his early DA novels - plot, characters, everything. I wish DG had time to work on the 'Empire' too, with all my respect for Patrick. But I'm going to finish it nevertheless.
...Specialist Samantha Traynor is confirmed as femQuizitor VA...
Why am I less and less excited about the DAI with every single bit of info they reveal?
James Vega as Iron Bull(which shows up equipped with the top worst DA2 weapon - Hayder Razor).
Solas which looks a middleground between Dobby the Elf and Fester Adams.
Cullen wearing that freaking lion armor(why?!!!).
And now - this...
