You never know. Something else could come along before then. I never thought I'd find a character I liked as much as Aarin Gend. So hopefully someone will come along that you like as much as Kaidan.

I'm sorry Dorian didn't work out like you'd hoped. Do you still like him though?

Eh. If I were to rank the inner circle from favorite to least favorite, it would roughly look something like this:

Cullen
Solas
Sera
Leliana
Cassandra
Josephine
Blackwall
Dorian
Cole
Vivienne
Varric
Iron Bull

More or less. Some characters may slide up or down a rank depending on my mood.

Leliana (awesome lady)

Cassandra (Sexy lady)

Varric (Awesome dwarf)

Dorian (Awesome Mage)

Cole (Spirit, ofc is awesome)

Cullen (Was ordered to kill my warden if possessed during the harrowing)

Josephine (Is semi-awesome)

Solas (meh)

Vivienne (meh)

Sera (more giggily funny meh, but still meh)

Blackwall (meh)

Iron Bull (No.)

Edit: Missed a letter in a name.

Very interesting. Alright then.

Cassandra

Sera

Dorian

Cole

Solas

Cullen

Varric

Iron Bull

Josephine

Leliana

Vivienne

Blackwall (I forgot he was a companion actually)

I think Dorian is seriously the best friend character Bioware has ever made. He truly cares for you. I love it when you leave and he says, “Try not to die. I would notice if you were gone.” I think that's really sweet. Of course, they probably use it for a romanced inquisitor too, but it's still good.

I just feel so starved for good friend characters in bioware games. You're either "boss" or the booty call.

I can never sway away from my perfect team....

Varric you'll be with it if only Bianca WAS ACTUALLY STRONG.

That or i would stop finding daggers

Seriously game wtf is with the amount of daggers.

Also as duely noted in a earlier post

silverite is your best friend to mages.

no more weak ass robes.

Hello full tank gear. (imo it looks awesome on Dorian)

I like my Inquisitor a hell of a lot, though. I'm not disappointed with him at all.

Mine doesn't look that bad.

Unless the game decides to badly render itself during a cutscene..

1 i remember fondly.

If it had a close up of my face, rendered nicely

however whenever it didn't render my face, it looked like a baby face with facial hair glued on. it was HILARIOUS

the wonders of Xbox 360.

Lmao, Doodle.

I hated the David Bowie hair at first. Now I'd never change it. I love it on her. It's probably the best hair...

for this game.

Completely unrelated but i have to correct this

Nah, the Templar spec is quite awesome, her focus ability, gives the party, how can i say it, a barrier that doesn't deplete. you know the marks on her hp bar.

GUARD, IT'S CALLED GUARD!

I think Dorian is seriously the best friend character Bioware has ever made.

??

But how about Varric+Hawke?  That's what the friendship looks like to me. Also I totally loved the way their friendship was handled in DAI. That's just exactly how I had pictured their relations.

Dorian? I don't like him that much. His personal quest theme felt too forced and unnatural. I have zero issues with his sexuality, but that...well, I don't see the point in making it so important, and all those speeches - those are good for cons not, for the in-game content, imo. Sera is a lesbian, but she's a character, a person. A player might not even know about her tastes (unless he clicks hearts and\or reads the wiki). With Dorian it's hard to miss that ' hey look! here we have a mistreated and misunderstood gay with the issues!' vibe. Oh, and an option to "fix" the sexuality with a blood magic?..Really?..

Oh man his personal quest was really awkward. Definitely. I sooo did not want to be there.

Other than that, I love the small things he says. Mission banter or going to check in with him. That's all really. Obviously YMMV.

He's a flirt. I'm a flirt. It's nice to have a character that enjoys your favorite past-time too.

Now that I think about it, Sera too. You get to do other stuff even if you don't romance her.

Spoiler

I wasn't as impressed with Hawke and Varric. Varric meant to be Hawke's best friend. I'd just rather have a character I picked out.

Dorian is good for players to play out the sassy gay friend fantasy, I guess. It's hard for me not to look at him as more than a stereotype, though. He's sassy, boastful, looks down on others as uncultured neanderthals, gives fashion critiques more than once, is incredibly sex driven and doesn't really "do" relationships (the inquisitor can barely talk him into giving it a try, and he reluctantly agrees), and he is very vain. "I'm too pretty to die." Really?

I tried breaking up with him just to see what would happen, and he barely displayed any genuine emotion. And when I call him out on it, he says, "Sure, I could break down and muss up my hair. Don't be ridiculous, I would never touch my hair." I was tempted to save it right there, but I already have a forever-alone warden and a forever-alone Hawke.

I like sincerity, compassion, integrity, commitment, and humility. That's why I love Kaidan so much.

@L2 Sentinel

So, am I getting it right that you don't really appreciate him, even being his....uhm... 'target audience'(so to speak)?

I understand that his 'message' was not meant for me specifically. But with all my tolerance - I feel there's something...'off' about him. Zevran was great, mHawke-Anders is fine, even with his awkward initiative. Traynor is tolerable (excluding the Citadel, lol). Dorian is somehow different from them, and I don't think I like that difference.

Some might think that it's about being anti-gay, but it's not. I just don't like it when the characters in games\movies start to 'preach', and speak some sort of irrelevant author's words. E.g. 'Interstellar' had that 'Love talk'. DAI has this 'coming out' (which is hard to tie to any of the previous lore) etc. Steve or Traynor just were, they did not make player to somehow justify their preferences (unless the player was directly interested in that).

You get to do other stuff even if you don't romance her.

But it does not have any sexual context! It's just a friendly chat.... Unless someone finds cookies hot... :P

Okay let me get a few things straight (pun intended)

1) After completing my first playthrough as a mage and knight enchanter, and cassandra romance, i decided to play the game again as a rogue and romance dorian (seriously i cbf to romance anybody else, maybe cullen if i decide to be female)

2) Dorian doesn't know any better, with the "sex driven" remark, and because of his homeland things between two men are accepted. but taken no further so because of his upbringing he may seem that way

3) there is a option you can take with dorian that he says he likes you more then he should, (ala "love") but because of his homeland, so he generally thinks the same of the south.

4) "Amatus" means "love" nuff said there

5) In party banter with cole, he possibly had feelings for another person but never acted on it (i'm clueless here)

6) If you do the romance scene, say you want more and pick the "foolish option" there's a nice little convo... ish

Spoiler tagging for obvious reasons

Spoiler

Clearly that states He does want to be in one with the Inq

7) I'm making a big deal of this, idc i like Dorian alot.

8) Romance also progresses as the story progresses. keep going on with the story.

9) I love killing dragons

10) Point 9 is irrelevant

11) So is point 10 and 11

12) He wants the Inq bad

Enjoy the semi-wall of text.

it's a once a year sort of thing

Well I just think he's a lot of fun and that's what I want of a DAI companion.

Doodle!

Have you killed them all?

I still need the last three. Sandy Howler, Kaltenzahn, and the Highland Ravager.

Yeah i killed all 10 of them.

had like 3 killed. then went on a massive killing spree of dragons in a day.

killed them all went from level 18-22 in those dragons.

killed the "Highland Ravager" the so called "highest level dragon" at level 19.

Bring yourself.

A tank (in my case Cassandra)

Vivienne (i'd normally place another mage here but knight enchanters can Solo every dragon in this game, i brought dorian becuase i was knight enchanter)

and a ranged rogue (i had cole with duel daggers. died more often then dorian and he was squishy)

After he's dead, farm his little cavern for Silverite, best metal ever

also the 2nd dragon in that area, the one on the middle of the 3, he has silverite too, farm there too

Lol in all seriousness

control vivienne and just spam her sword move. game is instantly won and easy

it's builds barrier based on damage delt

all dragons that gain "guard" will have it chipped away in seconds.

@Nrieh - Yeah, I'm in the minority, but I'm not terribly fond of Dorian. I agree with you. I'd rather just have a same-sex romance that was handled the same as any other romance; where being gay was no big deal.

@Doodle - I get that his upbringing helped shape who he is, but the writers could have just as easily gone in a different direction.

I lost ten hours of gameplay because I was uncomfortable with the decisions I made during the romance scene with Dorian. I tried every option before settling on it, but I still ended up regretting that choice. So I reloaded an earlier save and chose the "Let's slow things down" option. No sex scene, but at least my inquisitor established that he wants a relationship before things get physical. Doesn't change the fact that Dorian talks about our sex life in party banter, though. In the end, I know it will probably make no difference. I just like the romance scene better the second way, so I'm glad I reloaded that save.

Lmao, I meant non sex stuff. You get to hang out as friends whenever you want.

Which is funny because he gets really pissed at Bull for doing the exact same thing.

I have a hard time keeping Cole alive. Same with Iron Bull. They are my only two melee dps characters, and they both just run in and die.

Also, who do you use as your main tank, sis? You don't like Blackwall, and you said Cassandra keeps dying on you. That leaves Iron Bull. But I don't get how he's a better tank than Cassandra. Reaver seems to be a pure damage dealing tree.

Well i have no idea about Iron Bull,

However there's a metal in this game, known as Silverite, it removes class restrictions on gear when you craft the items (aka "mage only robes" can be worn by warriors and full heavy plated tanky gear can be equipped by mages)

When you find it i highly recommend collecting alot and making a good armour set for Cole. helps him stay alive

Also teach Cole stealth

Ash didn't know how awesome the templar specialization tree is.

Yeah, this playthrough I've been juggling all three. I started with Blackwall, he's a great tank, but I just don't like his character. Mixed Cassandra in, but she just didn't live. Threw Bull in too. Bull does ok for me. He's no tank. Reaver's great but he needs someone to take the heat off, which I can't do as a rift mage. Neither can Cole and Sera obviously.

I've been having to micro manage battles. My brother's been helping me with rift mage (he loves it for some reason). There's just a lot of pausing in the battles and working things out.

I'm trying to get Cassandra up to par now. Maybe I'm just babying her too much. Should just let her fight I guess, maybe I'm trying to be too strategic. I had her specced all in Vanguard before which really sucked. I have everything in sword and shield and most in Templar now. Should I respec her to all templar first?

I really suck as a strategic fighter, lol. I need my Knight Enchanter back.
