But it is a cross.  And when we're dealing with Templars, christian symbolism is hard to ignore.

On Wikipedia, the symbol used for the (real world) Knights Templar is

200px-Cross_Templar.svg.png

Though the Templars in fact seem to have used pretty much every Cross variant ever.

Yes, the resemblance is very clear.  Personally, I'd much prefer it if the Red Templar symbol was more similar to a variant on the sword of mercy rather than the cross of the real-life Templars.  I think it'd be nice to always have at least some clear separation between the design of fictional and real-life religious elements.  People, myself included, carry plenty of baggage when it comes to these things.

Well, in a world without Christianity (instead it has "Andrastianism"), the cross is just a geometric symbol.

BTW, it was a geometric symbol used by dozens of pre-Christian cultures. You can find Mayan temples from the 9th century with crosses on them. In many cases, for them, the symbolism was astronomical.

OK, so I take it they've never demo'd the PC UI yet. Well, in all honestly, if the UI is like DA2, should be fine. I didn't like the dialogue UI, but the combat UI was perfect.

Yeah, they've not shown the PC UI yet. I'm going to assume it'll be pretty similar to the interface seen in DA:O and DA2.  ;)

Still, even if the cross is not "owned" by Christianism as a symbol, a lot of people will still identify it as Christianity-related.
That being said, I don't really mind it being a cross.

Dust storms?

Yep, that dust tornado thing was moving across the landscape in the video. Not sure if it's just visual flair or if there's any gameplay involved, though.

(We've also seen the Inquisitor in the middle of a sandstorm in a desert location.)

Do you think they dust storms or other weather effects will do damage to Inquisition property? Or maybe just in-pare trade routes etc?

If it was being used by some Dalish, it'd just be a geometric symbol.  But it's being used by a bunch of religious Knights named after a Christian organisation that used the cross as their symbol.

I mean, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, sure.  But if you hold it at your crotch and make lewd gestures with it, then the symbolism becomes a bit inescapable.

Hard to say, I got the impression that a lot of those weather effects will be visual - and on the next-gen systems they might do things like make the Inquisitor's armour sandy/dirty/muddy.

Doing damage to property seems like a more difficult thing to put in the game, and there are probably other ways to threaten the Inquisition that don't have to involve weather.

Not sure about property damage, but the weather can impact the game... From the Game Informer article:

"In the desert, a sandstorm could inflict damage over time and force you to find shelter."

Well, I for one am hoping (nothing more than that though, hoping) that we'll see some world reaction to weather effects like dust storms. Maybe some guards high on the walls of keeps shielding their eyes or something?

Yes, I'd love the weather system to be more immersive than just water or sand/snow that exists merely to exist and everyone simply ignores it...

And rainfall causes mud, which will hinder movement.

Thank you for this! Very observant. I find that new Red Templar symbol very interesting. Any theories on where it could be coming from? I know it was in the Origins files, anything other than that?

Yeah I noticed that too. Shouldn't it be a sunburst instead?

NO.

The red Templars cut off from the chantry in 9:40 dragon.

And the Inquisitor's shoes get muddy, at least on next-gen consoles. There was even talk of custom animations that mean the Inquisitor walks differently through mud.

(Next-gen mud™ semi-confirmed rumour.)

Yep. I believe we even saw this during one of the demos/GameInformer videos. Looks great!

Aye. The Inquisitor appears to move differently through mud, as well as when travelling up and down sloped surfaces. It all looks pretty great.

How about some interesting things I noticed about the good ol' Red Templars?

First off:
-some of them, or at least the archers, have hoods instead of helmets

tumblr_n1jhjkQcCc1sjnh4bo8_250.png

-Also, notice that symbol on his chest? That's no Templar symbol ladies and gents! In fact, it's a symbol recovered from all the way back in the Dragon Age: Origins files:

tumblr_n1jhnsVcoC1sjnh4bo2_500.png

 (labeled cross)

-This means they either decided to use this symbol at a later date, or having been planning the Red Templars from the start!

So they basically took the Knights Templar Cross and added some flames?

Subtle BioWare.

Oh wait, now I remember,  they had this back in Awakening as a Shield Heraldry.

Nice.

I think it was once mentioned that the dust storms cause damage.

Good digging.  Based off of the design of the red lyrium bows, I think we may be seeing bows being used as melee weapons as well.  I never played DA2 as a rogue, so I have no idea if that is new or not.  Either way, I'm a huge fan of bladed bows.

It is not new in DA2 Varric or Sebastian use X/Bow as melee weapon if enemy is close.

Also important to notice in the 'Load Savegame' screen:

- One character is saved in a location called Frostback Pass, so it seems like we'll be going back to the Frostback Mountains.
- Both the Western Approach and the Southern Desolation have the same 'picture'.
- We can also visit the Nahashin Marshes in western Orlais (though that was to be expected)

Good eye. However, some of the images may be placeholders, which could explain why Western Aproach and Southern Desolation use the same picture. One (or both) of them could change before release.

Will be good to go back to the Frostback Mountains, though. I believe there's some speculation that the Inquisition's main keep is located there?
