Sorry to be a little harsh, but Scuttlebutt is an awful name for a forum. General discussion is way better because then non-(native)english speakers (like me) have at least a clue what you are talking about. Forum names shouldn't need an explanation at all to what topics could be found there. That you need to explain yourself shows that it is an awful name.

After reading it a couple of times it is a nice sounding word though, but still with a forum name everybody (even non-(native)english speakers) should be able to know what they can find there. General discussion is maybe to wide of a topic, but it was clear for everybody what you could find there.

I didn't know what it meant, but it's a fun term.

The new forum looks fabulous. Really glad I could lose the 'hawke' in my forum name and pick a fancy avatar. Thanks for the polished changes!

Was confused for a second, but it's all clear now. I think it's funny and awesome. :)

Oh for the love of god stop complaining about the name and just deal with it.

nah, it would be weird if people didn't complain about pointless things.

Yeah. Stop being condescending for everything and anything too. You add nothing. We are in a new forum, and people are simply giving their opinion in this topic. They are not forced to claim " wow, it's awesome ". Whether you like it or not. They are not really complaining, you do love to exaggerate.

I don't care about the name, but I'm not so keen on having the forum split up.  Particularly since "feedback" forums always seem to be the death of good discussion.

I'm not really a huge fan of the term, but I guess I'll grow to like it.

It's a pretty old term, most people *should* know what it means :)

Antique terms aren't really big nowadays. Either way I'm gonna refer to them as Scuzzlebutt.

I am actually astonished at how many [American] people on here don't know what "scuttlebutt" is, or its origins. I knew what scuttlebutt was as a kid, granted my dad was AF, but it's a term I've used on several occasions. I've had to explain what "pop" is more times than explaining "scuttlebutt".

*clarification: I used the quotes to actually quote the word, no sarcasm intended. :-)

Scuttlebutt works if you are a english native with knowledge of the meaning of the word. For a non-english speaker like myself it really sounds gibberish and in no way represents this forum.

No, with the amount of stuff people can dream up, gibberish sounds totally appropriate. LOL

Scuttle...Scuttle...SCUTTLEBUTT!

Okay, someone needs to draw this up now.  I don't have the skills, but I wonder what a scuttlebutt would look like?

And they need to throw in an Easter Egg in Inquisition referencing the All-Mighty Scuttlebutt in some way.

I agree, we need a scuttlebutt reference somewhere in Inquisition. Maybe a drunken old prisoner who is quite insane.. it would be appropriate.

As Jessica stated near the beginning of this thread, "scuttlebutt" is another word for "rumor" or "gossip."

I have nothing against slang and as a foreigner did know what it meant.

However personally I would not have used it.  This forum gets people from all over the world so common english would be more appropriate.

Its a good term.

Though if it is aimed at rumours, where will all the complaining threads go?

Should there be a topic for 'grousing' or 'grumbling' :-)

Scuttlebutt works.  Really, no matter what word you used, it would have gotten picked on.  It's the internet.  People love to be picky.

I had no problem with the name, but I'm a fan of the webcomic Lackadaisy which names a lot of things after old slang terms so it's something I'm used to.

"Arrr ye scurvy dogs, cross our palms with coin o' the realm or we'll scuttle yer butts!"

(Actually I'm old enough to remember the term from WW2 movies, but never knew about the water cask.)

As a not native English speaker, I think I only met this word in Mass Effect. So at least I know its general meaning. But now I'm doomed to always have a mental image of Ashley discussing my Shepard's imaginary relationship with Kaidan. Weird.

I thought I'd post this here just to give some people a little insight into this forums new name.

Basically, Scuttlebutt is slang for gossip and rumours.

The only reason I know this is because my parents were in the navy and Ashley Williams uses it when talking to Femshep about Kaiden.

Thanks for the explanation.

That would be most excellent. I would probably have to pause the game for five minutes just to catch my breath if they did something like that.

I would have preferred a better name, it does not sound like a proper forum name.
