Don't see the problem with General Discussion personally. But whatever.

I like they took out the "date joined" aspect of your profile and replaced with the amount of overall posts you have made. Totally not going to encourage forum whoring or anything like that.

I admit i was shocked the first time..."scuttle"..."butt"...i even asked in other thread what it means...and it sound nasty...but who am i to question something not in my own language isn't it? Anything could means anything....

Someone else thought that lol, I thought I just had a dirty mind or something  :pinched:

Scuttlebutt works if you are a english native with knowledge of the meaning of the word. For a non-english speaker like myself it really sounds gibberish and in no way represents this forum.

Exactly my thoughts...

Assuming everybody will understand some slang from the US (or whatever this came from) is a bit of a stretch in a forum you know there's people from many different countries...

Scuttlebutt may be cool, but I've never heard such a word before and I consider my english to be rather good. Since these forums are visited by a lot of non-native speakers, I think it would be better to choose a word that is more widely known, such as Rumors.

You learn something everyday it seems. Now I know what "scuttlebutt" means. :P

Well, as a non-native in english I must say that I'm touched by Bioware's confidence in my ability.

It wasn't misplaced. I did know what scuttlebutt is, and I have a cunning plan in place for situations when I don't understand a word I come across (google it or ask someone). I'm actually pretty sure most, if not all, people are equally savvy.

I like it. Playful and informal. You did good, Jessica.

Doesn't matter what it means, I can't get around the word 'butt'. I liked General Discussion better, but it's no biggie.

I still think it's pretty stupid.

I already knew the word, though. Ashley taught me.
Is there no way to edit posts anymore so that I can add useless trivia like that after I pressed the submit button?

There is the "edit" button under your post.

It doesn't seem to appear until you refresh the thread, I think.

edit:  Yes

So would it still be sufficient to call this site "BSN"? What will it be from now? :S

Edit: Nevermind, it's just called Bioware Forums

Holy crap I have a lot of posts.

I wonder if there's a way to count how many words I've written on BSN...

The term corresponds to the colloquial concept of a water cooler in an office setting

XBone forum confirmed.

Sure there is a way. You can write a simple console script to look in every thread created in bsn since your joining date and count words. It will take several weeks, but it can be done.

Really, this many people have never heard of Scuttlebut?....Geez, the britts only invinted it 400 or so years ago.

BTW, it hasn't been limited to the Navy in a long time.

Scuttlebutt is the same as "heard through the grapevine" ""rumor has it" "word on the street" etc.

Its a perfectly good term.

BTW, I was never in the Navy, have never sailed a ship, and have no tie to the term at all except for literature/movies.

Scuttlebutt is fine.

I'm more confused why none of my registered games are showing up underneath my username and yet other posters do.

You have to go to your Profile on the old BSN Forums and copy the link to each game's profile and paste it into your new one here.

There might be an easier way, but that's what I did and it worked for me.

This.  And it's not anywhere near as common a term in the U.S. either as a lot of people here seem to think.  It was a bizarre choice, and frankly I really don't understand what was so wrong with something straightforward and obvious like "General Discussion."  The rationalization against calling this forum something simple and straightforward like General Discussion (Gods forbid!) doesn't really make sense.

I chose scuttlebutt because it was originally a nautical/military term (and later adopted as office slang). So it was appropriate for Dragon Age and Mass Effect as well as BioWare office chatter. You'll notice that there is no longer a "general discussion". It was our largest and the most "vague" subforum. I think it became a catch all, and so I started thinking "what kinds of things are going in here?" We split it up into a few other subforums that we thought would be useful in order to make discussion more focused and on-topic (so self moderation would be easier). That lead to some cool subforums like Scuttlebutt, which I think is cooler sounding than "rumors", as well as the Feedback & Suggestions forum. It also led to the New Player Guide & Quest Help subforums! We really hope they become useful ways to organize your discussions :)

EDIT: Originally, we were going to call it "Scuttlebutt around the Web & Beyond" but we thought might be too long. Let me know if you think title would have clarified or if we were right to edit it down to just the one word!

Alright, but if nobody is sure what actually scuttlebutt means (ehehehehehe butt), wouldn't that just become the 'Catch All'?

That the word needs to be explained to people makes me think it wasn't a good name choice and isn't as intuitive as it should be for a forum. Yeah, everyone will get used to it but it seems silly to me that the section wasn't just given a more straight-forward name.
