Considering

"Discuss rumors, journalism, convention coverage and social media surrounding Dragon Age: Inquisition."

Is right beneathe the forum title, I fail to see the confusion?

I think we all understood what the forum "General Discussion" was to be used for - to talk in general terms about the DA: Inquisition game. The point being, I do not see the reason behind changing a well known name for a forum. I feel the same way about changing
the Off Topic forum to The Lobby. As others have said we know what the Off Topic forum was and is...

After this criticism some praise:

I like that we know have buttons we can click and that we don't have to scroll all the way down to get to the forums we need to reach.

As I don't see why the name "General Discussion" had to be changed, I don't mind this name being chosen. I'm fine with it, as I've already gotten used to it.

Scuttlebutt works if you are a english native with knowledge of the meaning of the word. For a non-english speaker like myself it really sounds gibberish and in no way represents this forum.

Well English is my first (and only) language and the term was gibberish for me too until I clicked on this topic and also Googled the word. It still sounds gibberish though. I think using the words "Gossip" and "rumors" would work better considering more people have knowledge of what these words mean.

As I said, "Speculation" would work nicely.

And there doesn't even need to be these sections for ME1, ME2, DAO, and DAII. No point at all. ME3 and DAI sure.

Well, as a non-native in english I must say that I'm touched by Bioware's confidence in my ability.

It wasn't misplaced. I did know what scuttlebutt is, and I have a cunning plan in place for situations when I don't understand a word I come across (google it or ask someone). I'm actually pretty sure most, if not all, people are equally savvy.

I like it. Playful and informal. You did good, Jessica.

Google you say ? ZOMG ! How didn't I think of that ! You are a true genius....

Point is, if this many people have to look it up or ask, just like this thread, it's a fail. Word for the subforum should be clear and easily understandable for everybody.

The Scuttlebutt section is the new General Discussion.

Speculation, Scuttlebutt, gossip, rumor are not really better than general discussion to me. There are some topics which don't fit to those words. For example, multiple debates around templar / mage war , discussions about atheism and religion in Thedas, Grey warden etc etc, what we liked in DAO and DAII. Unless Bioware wants this section more focused on speculation, gossip, and rumor as well lol.

Story discussion would work for that.

General Discussion always amused me because of so many people posting what would be spoilers to a new player anyway.

Well at least from my non native English speaking point of view, "scuttlebutt" seems fitting for this section ...

Since the scuttlebutt was a physical thing (drinking fountain basically), this is like the Village Well section of Wikipedia.  You don't have to view the forum as containing a bunch of rumors and gossip.  Just imagine it as a gathering place where people shoot the breeze.

Ah the old scuttlebutt.  What fond memories I have of it from my JROTC days.

Well, it would work if people cared to post in this section, and if Bioware cared to move their topics where it needed to be ! XD

This is one of my issues, and why I'm not impressed with this title that Jessica Merizan seems to think was so awesome and clever.  There is plenty of discussion surrounding Inquisition that doesn't qualify as any of the things under the description of what belongs in this forum, which technically means that any such discussion is off-topic and thus subject to mod slapdowns, something I mention because I've gotten the impression that Bioware intends to be more strident in enforcing forum rules.

But due to the lack of another forum that technically does permit those kind of discussions, this forum has by necessity become the catch-all forum she seemed to be trying to avoid, per her explanation, assuming I understood it correctly.  Like so many other things, this just doesn't seem to have been thought through.

Very well said. This is exactly why I was confused the first time with this weird word and its description below, this is what I thought. But I couldn't have said it better.

This new forum name sounds weird to me. Even as a native English speaker, I've never heard the word "scuttlebutt" used in conversation. The first thing that came to mind when reading it was the image of a cuttlefish shaking its behind, and I don't think that's what BioWare was going for. The real definition doesn't cover all the topics that are discussed here either.

I thought it was a nice tease. Calling us scuttlebutts, hehe.

Because, you know, nothing says community than grouping us like assholes xD

I didn't mean that as sarcasm, really. It'd be nice for DG or Mary Kirby to come here and call me as knobhead, I'd feel appreciated and loved. You know who your real friends are when you can insult their dead grandmothers and laugh about their misfortunes in their face knowing they'll do the same thing to you whilst laughing all the while!

Moved this to Forum Help mostly for clarifications for others, as this isn't really Dragon Age related at this point and the term is used for all the general threads.

Cheers.

When I saw 'Scuttlebutt,' I thought it was just my eyes playing tricks on me, after having played so many Elder Scrolls games.

After all, it does sound like a lot of the names for diseases in that series: Collywobbles, Ticklebritch, Witbane, Rockjoint etc.

Even after realizing it wasn't my eyes being (even more) phased out by the blinding light of the forums, I still didn't connect it.

Not to anything serious, mind. As my initial made up definition came to something (laughably) like, "Smells like a fish's behind?"

Only when I actually bothered to search it up on the web, to scroll through Urban Dictionary/Wikipedia, did I get my answer.

Still though, this is coming from a natural English speaker who likes to travel and do a fair amount of writing (when he can).

So I find it odd, at best, that they'd go with such a name that's so ambiguous to those without specific knowledge.

Something a little more general might work better to lessen confusion, perhaps: 'Gossip & Press,' for instance.

I have never before heard about this word "scuttlebutt". But I have to confess that after the explanations I think it is a nice choice and at least for Mass Effect also quite appropriate.

Nevertheless it is not something you can understand at first glance, especially if you are not a native English speaker. Therefore many persons will wonder what this is and not all will look and find this thread to get the explanation.

In my opinion your original idea was perfect ...

[...]
EDIT: Originally, we were going to call it "Scuttlebutt around the Web & Beyond" but we thought might be too long. Let me know if you think title would have clarified or if we were right to edit it down to just the one word!

Even if this is quite long the extensions "around the Web & Beyond" would make it clear for everybody what is meant here, even if "scuttlebutt" is not known.

Therefore I would keep the word, but add what you originally planned. Thus you can keep a quite unique wording for a forum and nevertheless allow all persons who at least are able to speak enough English to come here to recognize intuitionally what is meant :)

Luckily google told me what the word meant (not a native Englisher).

Scuttlebutt is military slang for gossip. More specifically, its used by the Navy and Marines. It originates with the water fountains aboard ship which are called scuttlebutts. People would often gather around them and gossip, just as people do around an office water cooler. Given the setting for the Mass Effect series, it also makes complete sense for the name of a subforum. I hope it isn't changed, at least on the Mass Effect side of the boards. It does make less sense for DA.

While it is military jargon, anyone who played the Mass Effect series should at least be familiar with it. It was used in dialogue in Mass Effect 1.

That being said I do remember a few people being confused by it. There was at least one thread I recall where someone was complaining about Ashley being too familiar with Shepard, by calling him "skipper" and "scuttlebutt."

I know that now because a few people here have mentioned it, but before reading this thread I don't think I've even heard the term used in movies. Still don't care for it.

When does that dialogue come up in ME1? I haven't seen it yet.
