I much prefer the shortened version of Scuttlebutt.

I like the "tang" of that word.

I can see how some would not.

And for non-native english speakers it may be a bit confusing.  "General Discussion" is that generically understood descripto.

 

Would appear to be that decision of the ole artistic flair versus vanilla and more commonly understood.

I still vote for Scuttlebutt.

Etymology online is a great site to go to whenever you run into some English slang word you're unfamiliar with. Besides giving the definition it also gives the origin, which helps make sense of some words (like scuttlebutt) whose meaning has been lost over the centuries. I was familiar with the word from my time in the Marines, but never knew why those water fountains were called scuttlebutts.

1805, "cask of drinking water kept on a ship's deck, having a hole (scuttle) cut in it for a cup or dipper," from scuttle "opening in a ship's deck" (see scuttle (v.2)) + butt (n.2) "barrel." Earlier scuttle cask (1777). Meaning "rumor, gossip" first recorded 1901, originally nautical slang, traditionally said to be from the sailors' custom of gathering around the scuttlebutt to gossip. Cf. water-cooler, figurative for "workplace gossip" mid-20c.

I know that now because a few people here have mentioned it, but before reading this thread I don't think I've even heard the term used in movies. Still don't care for it.

 

When does that dialogue come up in ME1? I haven't seen it yet.

 

If you play a female Shepard in ME1 who is getting rather friendly with Kaidan, one of your conversations with Ashley will have her asking if the "scuttlebutt" is true that you and Kaidan are becoming an item. Something to that effect.

 

Not sure if/when it comes up as a male Shepard. I've actually only had FemShep playthroughs so far and my male one I just started hasn't gotten to any deep conversation points with crewmates yet.

I chose scuttlebutt because it was originally a nautical/military term (and later adopted as office slang). So it was appropriate for Dragon Age and Mass Effect as well as BioWare office chatter. You'll notice that there is no longer a "general discussion". It was our largest and the most "vague" subforum. I think it became a catch all, and so I started thinking "what kinds of things are going in here?" We split it up into a few other subforums that we thought would be useful in order to make discussion more focused and on-topic (so self moderation would be easier). That lead to some cool subforums like Scuttlebutt, which I think is cooler sounding than "rumors", as well as the Feedback & Suggestions forum. It also led to the New Player Guide & Quest Help subforums! We really hope they become useful ways to organize your discussions  


EDIT: Originally, we were going to call it "Scuttlebutt around the Web & Beyond" but we thought might be too long. Let me know if you think title would have clarified or if we were right to edit it down to just the one word!

I'd edit it to General Discussion.

Now I know you said that is a bit of a vague term but most people would know where to go on seeing it to discuss general topics on the games in question.

A fear is for me that folk will see 'Scuttlebutt', not know what it is and move on from the forum.

Sometimes the simple name is the best.

In short. If you have to explain what a word means, it probably wasn't the correct one to use.

I'd much rather they go back to being called "General Discussion" It's just going to become the "catch all" forum(like others have said) anyway. And like others have said, a lot more is in General Discussion than rumors and gossip.

Maybe it's an Edmonton thing.  I was in Edmonton yesterday, and my mother used the word "scuttlebutt" in conversation.

Thanks, that explains why I haven't seen it. I haven't played a Shepard who romanced Kaidan yet.

Man, I had no clue about the meaning of "scuttlebutt" I just thought it was the designers being random.

The only reason I know this is because my parents were in the navy and Ashley Williams uses it when talking to Femshep about Kaiden.

 

I know this because of a krogan at the Citadel , he used the same word when talking about "something".
