Why don't Infiltrators use the Geth SMG?

After what I saw one specific player do in two seperate matches, I started to wonder about the sanity of showing up to matches with just a Sniper Rifle.

To clarify what said player did, he tried to take on a small army of enemies using a Javelin.

Said army were mobbing him at melee range and included at least 2 Banshees.

Now, I understand that Infiltrators only carry one gun for cooldown reasons, but I also know that with an Ultralight Materials Mod, a Geth SMG is almost weightless, therefore you can carry it as a backup weapon with minimal effect on your cooldown.

After seeing the aforementioned display of inadequate preparation, I'm going to bring back the rule I have about playing with Infiltrators.

If the Infiltrator doesn't bring a backup weapon in addition to their sniper rifle, I'm not playing in the match.

And as an aside, because I don't believe I saw this, there was a Geth Juggernaut who thought a Black Widow was the only weapon they needed!

Still haven't worked out how that would work in gameplay.

Not that I got to find out by watching it, the player quit the match because they were impatient.

You will have really hard time playing with any infiltrators if you are going to insist they have back up weapon. Additionally, most of snipers don´t have problems using sniper rifle only. I know I don´t. I have never ever carried back up weapon on sniper and never even had a need for it. And that includes characters with Javelin too.

Sounds like a problem on that players side.

GSMG is horrible anyway, using it wouldn´t help anyone

If somebody needs a secondary on their sniping infiltrator, they shouldn't be sniping in the first place.

GPSMG is a terrible choice for a secondary, by the way.

Enjoy leaving basically every lobby.

I always take Acolyte or Hurricane secondary. Cooldown doesn't matter on infiltrators anyway.

Being honest, I rarely bring a back up weapon on a sniper infi. With cloak, I find it's not really needed.

Are you seriously talking about cooldowns on an infiltrator? Unless you go duration and bonus power to use a power twice within cloak, you shouldn't worry about having a -OVER9000% cooldown.

Also, I don't believe in secondaries.

Heh, anyone who's good at sniping on an infiltrator doesn't have to take a secondary nor do they need one. Javelin GI doesn't need a secondary. You don't need to worry about cooldowns on infiltrators. Only time one should worry about cooldowns is if duration and bonus power is selected.

Hm, if he was still trying to snipe while being mobbed by such a group at melee range, chances are that no secondary is not his biggest problem :-).

OT, I don´t think a sniper infiltrator requires a secondary. I usually equip an ULM Hurricane or similar for convenience in those cases, but if they know their stuff it can be just as easily dispensed with.

Why does a class that frequently needs to cast powers not use a low DPS gun that needs a ramp up time?

Is this a serious question?

For off-host phantoms obviously...

Any Infiltrator with anything other than a sniper rifle is scrubby :)

The Hurricane might be a decent secondary. Might. But if you put yourself in the situation where you need a secondary weapon on a sniping Infilitrator, you're not doing it right.

Infiltrators do not need secondary weapons - if you do, then you are doing it wrong.  Sounds like our guy was just in a bit of a pickle - he got "tunnel vision".  The way MP works, if you do not look behind you every so often, then the game WILL spawn mobs behind you.  Using the Jav to look around (through walls, at things you CAN hit) can easily get you "tunneled in" and cause those spawns to come out of no where.  My guess is our pal were just learning the ropes.  It takes time.

Remember, the infiltrator is the weapon.  :)

Nope, just for on-host Guardians... they're deadly man.

Talon/Wraith infiltrators are the scrubbiest of all :)

You were playing with a scr-iper teammate. I've played with plenty of Inf players who only use a sniper rifle. They tend to do just fine without a secondary. There are better options than GPSMG if you have to use a secondary: acolyte, talon, CSMG, hurricane, arc pistol.

Having a secondary weapon with your sniper infiltrator build is kinda like training wheels. You stop using secondaries when you get experienced enough to kill your enemies at close range anyway, and/or have the game sense not to get into such situations much in the first place.

Because it sucks, and it's even worse than a sniper rifle for cqc since it has a ramp up.

My Salarian Infiltrator disagrees. You know what he doesn't need? A secondary. Ever.

Still wouldn't be the obvious go-to if, say, you're on Glacier and managed to get yourself between a pair of Banshees and have to urge to fight it out.  If you wanted a full-auto out of worry about close-range aiming under pressure... well, there's always the Reegar.

I always bring a GPSMG with ULM on all my duration specced infiltrators. Every single one.
