I agree with you on the case of Mass Effect. The Universe is friggin' huge in that game and there are very few reasons for people to cross paths with you, especially if you're on a mission to save life as we know it. 

 

In DA however, I believe there are some reasons for characters to return, especially if they have a powerful position. For instance Leliana, who has become an integral part of the Chantry has logical reasons to return in Inquisition. Same goes for Alistair (in the case of him being king) and the Warden and Hawke as they are both warriors of renown. People such as Isabella however have very little reason to show up. 

 

True, I can see how the DA universe would have more of an overlap of plot characters in each game, I'm totally expecting King or even Warden Alistair to make an appearance in DA:I and obviously Leliana is bound to make a return as well.

It was just the all cameos from DA:II left a bitter taste in my mouth.
The most infamous example is the complete retcon if you killed Leliana in DA (not that I ever did, mind you) she still makes a death defying appearance in DA:II. Also Alistar turning up as a washed up drunkard in The Hanged Man If he left your party in DA, just to pretty much tell you "Hey, remember me from the last game?".

I really hope Isabella doesn't make a cameo in DA:I, just leave her be, sailing the seas or something! It was just in DA:II her cameo felt right, not too out of place and it didn't scream of "Oh, look here's someone else from DA" like the others in DA:II did to me (though that might be because I didn't actually recognise she was from the first game till much later... )  .

I'm all for Zevran making an appearance again as well. He's my favorite character and he doesn't seem to get enough love. We already know Leliana and Morrigan are going to be in the game and probably have big roles, it'd feel unfair for Zev fans if he doesn't get at least a tiny cameo. I just want to see how he's doing, hahah

The only cameo I'd want is if they included the Warden/Hawke they'd also include their LI. Just because I'd love to see my Hawke and Merrill still together. Other than that I'm fine with whoever they choose to include.

I would like to see Alistair again. I think he's the only character I'd be disappointed about not seeing again. Fenris and Zevran would be nice, too.

 

Edit: And Bodahn and Sandal, but I'm assuming they'll be in the game for certain.

I want to see my favorite (living) Dragon Age companion: Shale. She'd totally fit in the story and she's awesome. I can't see my favorite companion, but I have a feeling her son will show up, so it'll have to do.

For a reason that makes infinitely less sense, I kinda wanna see Sketch in some manner that is less dumb then how he took part in DA2. He had an important role in Leliana's past, and I liked him for some reason. Since we'll no doubt be seeing Leliana and Justinia, why not add in the third character who was around for their meeting.

But in the case they'll do it, i'd like to see Fenris, Loghain and Justice (not Anders). First two because they fit with the Inquisition theme, and Justice - because he started the big crap and also is (non-hostile?) Fade creature.

This may sound silly, but I'd say the only perfectly executable cameo would be your old Mabari pal. I wouldn't mind seeing my Mabari again, he was a tough son of a B.

I would like to know what happened to DAO DLC companions such as Ariane, Finn, Sigrun etc. Also would be good to know hows Allistair doing.

On a more serious note, I hope they don't throw a bunch of cameos in for the sake of cameos... Mainly because I'm scared of what some characters might look like in a new engine.

The fewer of them the better I say. Although an alive Anders might be interesting (and I do love Justice), but I felt DA2 and ME3 went completely overboard with cameos to the point of it being a detriment, especially ME3.

Pretty much any cameo that isn't gratuitous.  That's hard to do, of course, though not impossible.

I'm hoping that with the gathering of the Dalish clans we'll get a chance to meet up with Ariane again. Although she was only in Witch Hunt, she was a great character and it was hilarious that she could understand your mabari...
