Herr Uhl explains the significance of Fenris' name.

He was basically the gods puppy until he grew to big and they decided to snare him. Tyr, the god who lost his hand, was the one closest to
Fenris, and put his hand in the mouth of the wolf as a guarantee that
the thread that they snared him in (after him ripping apart any chain
they could muster) wasn't trickery. It was witchcraft and thus Fenris
bit the hand off.
