Can someone explain to me why score matters in a coop game?

Who ever claimed it did?

PUGs do, pretty regularly.  I rarely use a mic, but I was tempted to the other day when a hosting GI/Jav with a lower ranking than me kept bragging about how he was outscoring my 'timid' KroSoldier/Graal.  The fact that I did all but one of the device hacks on 2 different waves and delivered both pizzas was lost on him.  The one device I didn't do was down to getting surrounded and grabbed due to a respawn after he used a missile on the other side of the map.  Textbook bad play.  Using a missile while someone is doing the final hack on the other side of the map is possibly the stupidest thing you can do in this game.

He also had a rather annoying habit of preventing me getting into rage mode by killing whatever I was about to melee, effectively using me as a meatshield.  And I mean effectively.  I have no problem with this tactic as a means to get rid of enemies as quickly as possible (assuming that you have the awareness that we will achieve that goal even quicker if you allow me to get into rage mode), but doing it so you can top the scoreboard is missing the point.

Score only matters when one is in first place.

But don't you know best for yourself how well you did? I mean the way put it top score=doing good, but that's not true.

There are other indicators like how often you die, doing the objectives,etc.. to determine how well I did. You are correct. I used to play with a friend where we competed for the top score for fun way back when, and that old habit still lingers.

OP:  I use score to weed out people who don't know how to play co-op.

You know, for example, if you score 100k more than the next guy in line, that person needs to a) go outside, B) play solo when they do, and c) get kicked from my game.

:)

I always thought people equate the score to how well you are doing and therefore how well you are contributing to the team. The problem is that you can do things that don't contribute to the team such as ignoring objectives in favour of getting points by killing the enemy. Doesn't help that delivering the pizza doesn't give you any experience points :(

When I started of 2 years ago I was the ultimate team player, reviving everyone without any hesitation, doing all the objectives by myself, detonating explosions, stripping shields etc. But the elitist players thought I was an average player because I chose to play the game the way it should be played. I felt I deserved more respect so I became a scorewhoring monster that the world had never seen and probably will never see. Those same elitist players now dislike me because I have become much better than them and I feel much better about myself when I outscore them very easily on or off-host.

I must admit the golden reviver in me is not so strong any more. I've played too many games, where I revive others my arse off, and when the time comes I could use some revive help myself, I see my team running to totally different direction. After playing this game enough, I know this happens only because of the score, this is sad but so true.

By the way, me0120, if you want to show you are a better player in something than someone else...

...what you should be playing is GTA V.  You can spawn kill, destroy lower level players with weapons they can't possibly get, take their money, and humiliate them until they flee the server.

That's the game for you.  GTA V is much more honest in that regard than ME3.

OP, it doesn't matter. it shouldn't matter. but as long as BW implements a "scoreboard" then it's always 'gonna' matter to a certain extent.

Human nature to compete, but it doesn't always have to be a negative thing...

To be fair, the scoreboard mentality was perpetuated by the last BSN as well as the average player.

This is BSN, there is no time to relax! Oh, wait ... this is a 'division of EA' ... you can relax now.

People just like to see where they sit in the pack. Nothing more than ego boosting. I've seen some great players in this game come dead last in the boards, but were responsible for objective successes and/or maintaining team synergy. The main principle is to have fun with those you game with.

I agree that putting your focus on score points in a co-op game is nonsense. I am also quite confident that if the board did not exist, mostly everyone would have a pretty good impression after the match on who did what for a successful mission, and that this would on average probably be more accurate.

That being said, I don´t mind it. It is probably something that is in the game primarily to satisfy the propensity of comparing and ranking ourselves relative to others. Which is being taught beginning at a very early age, so that questioning it mostly does not even occur to us - even if it becomes silly sometimes.

A very useful thing from the game developer´s view is to have something in the game that players can use to measure their progress as they get better with increasing playtime. Ladders and score points provide such a measure (regardless of their validity) and thereby can contribute to satisfaction, which at the end is what keeps people playing blahbah andsoonandsoforth.

The only thing that matters in a video game is having fun, and there are many ways to have that :-).

Because it's the only definitive way Bioware gave us to compare. Granted, it's deeply flawed and doesn't fit with the ideal of the game very much but people will still use it because it's all there is.

It's Ancient Prothean technology. Unless you were zapped by a Prothean beacon, you may not have heard of it before.

There's no "display damage numbers" toggle, so noticing how many points you got from a kill or assist is the closest thing to approximately assess how much you're doing when teammates are also attacking the same target.
