I am still learning about Mass Effect games!

I have recently been playing Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3, again. Since Mass Effect was released in 2007, I have played ME1 seven times, ME2 nine times, ME3 twice, and I am almost finished with my third playthrough of ME3. I cannot believe that I am still learning things about all of these games! For instance:

1. After becoming a Platinum expert in ME3 Multiplayer, the Insanity setting of the ME3 single-player campaign is jokingly easy! However...

2. The Hardcore setting of ME2 is significantly more difficult than the Insanity setting of ME3! When Shepard is staggered, the intensity and duration of the ME2 Hardcore stagger make the ME3 Insanity/Platinum stagger look like nothing. It is very difficult to recover from an ME2 Hardcore stagger, so recovering from the ME2 Insanity stagger must be next-to-impossible!

3. An ME3 Multiplayer tactic that I love to use is Biotic Charge followed by the Reegar Carbine with Incendiary Rounds. This tactic can be used to even greater-effect in ME2: Biotic Charge followed by the M-451 Firestorm; the results are devastating!

4. In ME1, I often used Stasis in order to stop an enemy from attacking me so that I could focus on other enemies. However, I was also annoyed because after I defeated all of the other enemies, I would stand around and wait for Stasis to expire so that I could defeat the last enemy. ONLY YESTERDAY did I learn that with the Bastion specialization, you can damage and kill enemies while they are in Stasis! Furthermore, Stasis can immobilize ME1 Thresher Maws! Detailed information is available at http://masseffect.wi...om/wiki/Bastion

5. An ME2 Praetorian is more dangerous than an ME3 Praetorian; in ME2, the Praetorians' lasers track you for their duration (in ME3, they do not track you). In ME3, you can melee or Biotic Charge a Praetorian, then dodge, then continue fighting. Not so in ME2; if you even begin to attempt a close-range attack on an ME2 Praetorian, then it will land and kill you with its Death Choir!

These are just a few of the aspects that I am discovering during my current playthroughs with these games. I once thought that I had Master-level knowledge of ME1, 2, and 3, but now I know that I still have much to learn! Are you a fan of Mass Effect from the beginning? Are you still playing the three games, and are you still making discoveries?

Hey! Welcome to the "I beat ME so many times I almost forget club :D"

To answer your questions:

Nope. Not from the beggining... Started at ME2, but then found it interesting and decided to check 1 out too. Then I discovered this forum and got hooked up even more.

And yes on those discoveries.

In Gameplay or Story. For Example, I just discovered that if you Turn Balak to the Alliance, instead of killing people, he robs food to help his people. Interesting, no?

Also, about those Praetorians: I think it's because there are many Preaetorians in ME3, instead of just 2 (Horizon and Collector Ship)... Or it was 3?

Hello MegaIllusiveman,

About Balak: yes, this is definitely interesting, and it is amazing how so many events that are experienced and decisions that are made in the first two games have great influence on what happens in the third game. I know that BioWare planned this interconnected story-mechanic from the beginning, but it is mind-boggling how they were able to keep track of every detail!

I believe that you are correct about the Praetorians appearing only twice in ME2. I just finished the Horizon mission as a Vanguard and the Collector Ship mission as an Engineer, and I cannot recall Praetorians appearing after those missions. Also, I suppose that if ME3 Praetorians were the same as ME2 Praetorians, then the completion of Platinum missions could be impossible.

ME2 was waaaaaay harder for sure. Combat movements were harder to use.

I am playing me-2 on insanity fot the first time now. It is though, yes. But many times it is a just a matter of taking cover and patiently use your powers. I play as a adept by the way. But i gotta say . On insanity you feel more respect for your teammates. I mean it is amazing how good they support you. Insanity reveals how important your teammates are. I have respect and enjoy their intelligent behaviour on the battlefield. On hardcore the battles end quickly . On insanity cover is your best friend.

I have played the trilogy numerous times. I just finished doing a low ems(1038) run. As you say insanity in ME3 isn't too hard. Insanity in ME2 is very challenging. I found insanity in ME1 fairly easy as well.

If you want to make ME3 hard try this I did a playthrough with a level one pistol and put no points to any powers(did the same for squadmates) on hardcore mode. I would have to say that is the hardest playthrough I've done.

In ME2,  Praetorians only show up on Horizon and the collector ship.

If interested in doing a kill all playthrough try this

Wow! Thank you for this incredibly detailed text-and-video evil walkthrough, themikefest!

Your playthrough is the opposite of one of the playthroughs on which I am working; I have reached the ME3 The Citadel downloadable-content, and along the way from the beginning of ME1, I have been certain to complete every assignment, every recruitment-mission, every loyalty-mission, select only Paragon dialogue-choices, and save everybody whom I had the option to save. I did this because I wanted to have full-attendance at The Citadel party.

I am angry and sad that Mordin cannot attend the party under any conditions, and I was infuriated when he died. Mordin is, by far, my favorite ME character, and I wish that BioWare had kept him alive. I also wish that Thane Krios, Kelly Chambers, Doctor Chakwas, Admiral Anderson, and Aria T'Loak could attend the party.

If you sabotage the genophage and able to keep Mordin alive, he will have some audio in the Citadel dlc

This is what the group photo looks like if you have only Sam, Joker, T'soni, Steve, Vega and edi at the party, Doing this makes the apartment feel very empty.

Insanity in ME2 is very challenging.

Well, I didn't find it challenging. It takes a bit more time, true, but it's doable. If memory serves, playing as an engineer made it even easier.

Mordin's datapad can show up in Citadel even if he is dead.

I'm posting about this topic rather late, but just started visiting the Bioware Social Forums. Mass Effect trilogy is amazing! I've played each game too many times to count, so I will happily weigh in on this topic.

Yes, you will constantly discover new things each time you play the games. I've probably played ME1 about 12 times (don't judge me!), and I didn't know until the 7th or 8th time that on Eden Prime, if you move to the front of the platform/ledge to the left of the beacon - a small cut scene plays out. Also on Eden prime, if you don't speak with any of the civilians before reaching the area where Nihlus's body is - there is a longer (not by much though) discussion about him.

Regarding insanity playthroughs, I find it depends somewhat on which classs I'm playing. Some missions are easier for certain classes. The final battle on Earth in ME3 where you're waiting for the missiles, is definitely easier for me on insanity when I'm a soldier or infiltrator. I can sneak past or outrun those damn banshees with relative ease. I think my first insanity run on ME2 was as a soldier, but it wasn't too bad on my sentinel run either. Fighting collectors as an adept had advantages - Harbinger will not advance through a singularity.

If I had to rank each game as a whole based on insanity difficulty:

ME2

ME3

ME1 (Exception: Playing as a brand new character with hardly any skill points accumulated, then ME1 is definitely the hardest in the beginning. If you're doing a 2nd playthrough with a high level character then it's not that difficult, but rather tedious as it takes forever to wear down enemies armor).
