1. machines don't occur naturally, they must be built
2. collectors live outside known space "darkspace" perhaps
3. they have tech that other races don't, would explain but that's spoilers.

Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? It all depends on who you ask. You know, the Borg - the cybernetic hive minds from Star Trek - also believe they're the good guys. That's because they collect worthwhile technologies and races and melt them together to be - their words - perfect.
Very true...Good and evil are all a matter of perspective. Much like beauty being in the eye of the beholder.

Maybe Collectors are doing something similar to Noah's Ark with collecting every intelligent specie from the galaxy in a secret place in order to avoid the next Reaper's genocide. This is the twist I would do if I was the ME2 writer
This is called Halo. It's exactly what the Forerunners did before they fired the Halorings.

I've never played Halo but I trust you. I also hope that Bioware has better writers than me or Bungie

Bungie has fantastic writers. The Halo games while praised for their multiplayer gameplay, have a very good story, not unlike Mass Effect. Don't condemn a game without playing it.
On the other side of things take a look at the now "action-oriented" Mass Effect 2. If you were an outsider not having played either game, would you not think them in the same vein of shooter with a focus on action and explosions rather than story?

Oh, don't take me wrong, I'm only joking. I have a lot of respect for Bungie and Halo (my only problem is that I suck on competitive online gaming... but that's not Bungie's fault
Probably Halo has a good quality story, but Bioware has real interactive stories with great storytelling/ characters. On other games the story is there but you can't modify it. I think that what Bioware does is a lot more difficult.

Oh for sure. Especially the way they are carrying the choices you make between the games. It seems that would be a rather daunting process. But it makes it so much more intriguing.
