You have an interesting voice. There’s something in the timbre, the pitch, the rhythm and roll of your words that makes other people pause and take notice. You’ve got that golden throat, that silver tongue, that prized platopharyngeal arch—and we want to hear it.

Starting at 12:01 p.m. PST on February 25, 2014, we’re offering you a chance to Take Your Place in the Inquisition by lending your voice to a character in the next Dragon Age game.

All you have to do is download one of the following two scripts, upload your performance, and send the link to takeyourplace@BioWare.com, and you’ll be automatically entered to win.

Don’t worry about accents, makeup, or props—all we want is for you to perform your preferred script in your lovely, natural speaking voice. If you want to go big, by all means, be our guest. However, be aware that your entry will be judged on the quality of the voice performance and how well it matches the style of Dragon Age.

We also encourage you to share your videos on YouTube and social media and tag them with #TakeYourPlaceDAI.*

The contest closes at 12:01 a.m. PST on March 24, 2014, at which point the collected entries will be judged by a panel of qualified BioWare staff.

The chosen winner will be announced after April 14, 2014. They will be flown to one of our recording studios and provided with up to two nights’ accommodation. Once there, we’ll set them up in a professional recording booth and add their voice to the world of Thedas.

And that’s all there is to it.

Best of luck!

Please see the full contest rules here for details and eligibility.
You can find the scripts here:
Script 1
Script 2
*Use of the hashtag #TakeYourPlaceDAI does not qualify as entry.

I'm gonna give this a whirl. I've dabbled in the field before and nothing would be cooler than an opportunity to dabble again through BioWare. Thanks a million for the opportunity.

Sounds like a fun idea. I won't take part in it, but it's good to see BioWare giving this a try.

Dissapointed about the response, though. Perhaps they're like me, unable to VA if it kicked them in the balls.

P.S

It's cool to see a little hint of the writing. Not that I expect to see this in game, but the whole villager conversation maybe gives us an idea on how the Inquisition will be met by the public.

Interesting, good to see that you've got a Hobbes-esque idea of civil war - it sucks for those in the middle! xD

Really tempted to do this, but my mic quality is awful and I despise the sound of my own voice. If I did end up winning I wouldn't ever be able to bring myself to talk to the NPC!

This was brought to my attention by a friend who thought my voice would be interesting, especially since my French accent could sound genuine for an Orlesian setting. Unfortunately I'm reading the first line of the contest rule:

TAKE YOUR PLACE IN THE INQUISITION (the “Contest”) is open only to legal
residents of, Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), New Zealand, United Kingdom and the
United States (including the District of Colombia)

I can't help but ask: WHY?

Is there a reasonable reason where you would limit the participation of Europe to only one country of residence? If the reason is the cost of transportation, it can be arranged. Not especially talking about myself, lots of people outside the UK speak an excellent English. And if you're really looking for an interesting voice and accent, you'd have more chance to find it if you broaden your horizon to more places.

Do I have to move to the UK to participate?

I'm going to give it a shot later, never tried anything like this before, but I've been told good things on those rare occasions I actually speak eloquently. Though I might have to get my hands on a better mic first.

I'm sure it's for legal reasons and they aren't doing to upset anyone personally.

I always find the obscure "legal" reason a bit too similar to space magic as an explanation. I know they're not trying to aggravate anyone but it's always annoying to be left out because you're part of a minority especially if you can't understand why. The Europe zone always gets poor treatment, mainly because of localization (which isn't the problem here obviously). This is just infuriating to me because the UK is 1h away by plan and I just happen not to live there at the moment (I'm probably moving there in a few months).

Besides, I'm still hoping to find a way to participate, so maybe more details would help.

If not, then at least I hope that for next big contest like this, they think more about the very frustrated part of their community that feels left out because everyone assumes they don't speak English.

The law might sound like space magic, but that doesn't mean it's not important. When making contests they have to make sure it complies with the laws about competitions in every jurisdiction that they're allowing, and they also have to register it as a competition in each separate jurisdiction. I don't know anything about the details involved, but there has to be a reason why it's only restricted to those countries.

They're clearly not doing it out of spite.

Gosh, guys! Again, nobody said they were doing it out of spite. I'm just asking for explanations, if possible. Just like me, you have no idea what's going on. Maybe if enough people like me express the desire to participate in those contests, next time they can pull out extra effort and make it possible in other countries?

Now do I have the right to ask for this and express my disappointment or is it too much?

It might not be a question of extra effort. It might simply not be possible.

Okay, but can't you understand why she'd just like an explanation?

I for one would also like to know why this game is being set partially in Orlais, and yet contenders from France are being left out.  This fan lives closer to London than I do to L.A. and  yet as a U.S. citizen I'm not being auto-disqualified and she is.

I think I'm more miffed *for* her after reading some of these comments than she probably even is for herself. o.O

I thought the tone of all her posts was polite and she simply wants an explanation -- a chance, even, if she can get one.

Nobody should be making her feel unreasonable for this.

kouzrah, go on with your bad, super polite and reasonable self, girl. ;)

I didn't say I didn't think she had a right to ask for an explanation, I was just a bit miffed by the implication that her exclusion was the result of laziness on Bioware's part.

I just think we should be careful not to assume that Bioware didn't put forth the effort to make this contest available to as many people as possible. Or to insinuate that the reason they didn't was possibly they assumed nobody in France spoke English.

*snip* I was just a bit miffed by the implication that her exclusion was the result of laziness on Bioware's part.

Why though? You don't think Bioware ever gets lazy? That the fans don't have the right to ask questions like that, especially if it's done as reasonably and politely as kouzrah did? I doubt the devs themselves will be as offended when they read her posts as you were on their behalf.

Regardless, I didn't see those implications at all. She simply said that it may be worth the extra effort to include the rest of Europe, and there's likely some truth to that.

Nope. Doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

We're off-topic now, but seriously, everyone lay off kouzrah and others who may share her frustration (especially if they're as polite as she is). It's warranted.

I don't think it would be an unreasonable explanation though. Any legal effort, such as drafting rules for a contest, requires money so they may have thought it wasn't worth the effort to invest for countries where participation would be assumed minimal. If it's the case, I hope to prove it wrong if enough people like me express interest in participating.

Or not. Perhaps Bioware was lazy, perhaps not. My issue lies in kouzrah's assumption that all it would have taken was a bit of extra effort. Nothing more. I just think people should avoid casting things as minor tasks when they have no idea what hurdles are involved. I'm not "offended", I just think kouzrah's complaint was a bit presumptive.

I was super pumped when I saw the announcement and even did a few tries of the scripts in front of a mirror and planned to record myself later today. Then I read the rules more clearly and found out I wasn't eligible because I don't live in the UK. It's a three-hour/three and a half-hour flight (depending on weather and airline) from Bucharest to London and, depending on the period of the flight, prices can be anywhere from 50€ (March-April, which seems to be the case for this contest) to 400€ (August, which I highly doubt will be the case). Any one of those is less than my salary, so I could pay them myself.

Just the slightest explanation would be welcome, as I was really exited and now I got completely deflated. :(

Oh Right... And Brazil doesn't?

I got hyped for it, but then saw this. Bloody hell...

Why available only to those people? Need transportation to record more lines? Why not do it online instead with all the world?
