When I first logged in today I felt a little disorientated. It felt a bit like that scene from the Matrix when Neo enters the Matrix for the first time and is standing the white silence of the Construct. I thought it might be helpful to start a thread to hightlight the features we like (or might be helpful to us) and identify any features that are missing, restricted or just plain awkward to use.

First and foremost these Dragon Age Toolset forums were a little hard to find being tucked away in the Customization forum as they are.

I miss the old "new feeds" page that provided a digest my friends' activities. The content seems to be there however it isn't conveniently collated into a single page as it once was. The New Content page shows me new forum posts, new BSN members and new profile groups. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be possible to restrict this just to my friends but at least I can limit the forums to just the Dragon Age Toolset forums. To find what my firends are thinking I have to go to the Status Updates page (which I've only been able to access through the Quick Navigation menu) and filter it with the Friends' Updates button.

Although we can create groups here it appears that none of the old groups have been transferred (they are still available on the Legacy BSN site along with projects, albums, blogs and polls). That presumably means we'll have to recreate any groups and I'm assuming (I haven't made one yet) they are more limited than the old groups were although I haven't made one yet. Are there any groups that might prove useful here?

I haven't found a link to the Dragon Age Toolset Wiki (although I suspect everyone knows it already).

So that's whtat I've discovered. What have you guys found? What do you like? What could be improved?

I created a group called "DAO Companion Creators" as a sort of catch all group for anyone who creates, tests, or even plays companion mods. It's public but by approval... at least for now. Anyone interested in companion mods is welcome to join.

Close to Z I could see that, Zola, when I checked the quick navigation. That' s my note, Sunjammer : no more privacy options. Gone. That is ...bad. Or are these options so well hidden, I haven't found them yet?

Ah yes privacy - haven't thought about that - I guess everyone can see my moronic commentary? Oops!  I'll have a hunt for the privacy settings now.....

Not only yours, Zola. :)
Everyone can see the activities of all. That is what I find disturbing. That would be a backslash in the context of privacy policy and data protection. It is out of your own hand...(:

Ehm, if you detect anything similiar to privacy settings, Zola, please share...

As another additional note - though it's meanwhile a must - finally mobile version supported. No more fight with the same notification pop up windows which one has seen already hundred times and could sometimes get hardly rid of on mobile devices.

I was always told (not that I always do what I'm told  ) that if I didn't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all.

So.  I'm certainly glad to see that my friends are still here even if the newsfeed is missing (one of my favorites).   Does the link to the toolset so that it can be downloaded by new modders (or existing modders setting up a new computer) exist on the new BSN?

Not sure if this is of interest but I notice that when you log in there is the option to do so anonymously - its a tick box - it doesn't add you to the active users list (i.e you can ensure that others aren't aware of which forum posts you are reading and creepy stuff like that.)

The link to the wiki and the toolset downloads are still available on the Legacy BSN Site which isn't great but better than nothing. However I did create a "one stop shop" for the offical resources with some help from BioWare (I'm looking at you Jesse Ried and Jeff Rousell). I make a point of getting a link to that page onto the Welcome page.

I have noticed that as well on my first login. But to my opinion that is not the same like having privacy options available. Good enough if you only want to read or pm. Certainly you can not post etc. logged in as anonymous user. Would have been better if a toggle would be available after the login. One-stop- shop like...

Good idea, Sunjammer, and thanks for the effort.

I agree. There should be far more privacy settings for users. The option I mentioned isn't ideal.

There are no "project" pages for building/testing here. No place to upload test files??? The old site still has the ability to create a new project. I just checked it. But, I don't think any of the old groups are working (no new posts allowed).

Projects are being phased out altogether, as far as I know. You'll need to look elsewhere for hosting.

I noticed in "My Settings" that there is a "Manage Attachments" option (500kb limit). I would have assumed that that was for the PM system, but I don't see anywhere to upload attachments. I just see a "My Media" button in the full PM editor. Again, no link to upload an attachment though.

I'm wondering if a new BSN Site doesn't deserve some new stickies for each of the Toolset sub-forums? I'm pretty sure if we came up with an appropriate post/thread for each sub-forum I could persuade the powers to be to post/sticky them (and remove the old ones that are no longer relevant). Who is up for bainstorming a suitable format and/or content for each of these:

  • General Discussion
  • Level and Area Creation
  • Cutscenes
  • Audio
  • Scripting
  • Project Announcements & Recruiting

Also are there any general groups, i.e. not personal or project specific groups, that are worth recreating here?

In other news for mobile users (because it took me a while to spot it) if you clicked on the "Full Version" button and don't know how to get back to the mobile version, use the (slightly confusingly named) "Change Theme" link in the bottom left corner of any page.

I'd like to see a comprehensive list of modder resources (especially a list of supplemental programs) similar to what the DA2 forum had posted here.

I'd also like to see a stickied link to that community index/open house website in the Project Announcements & Recruiting forum. (I know it caused some conflict way back when, but it was still a useful resource for players and modders to find content.) And/Or perhaps something of similar organization contained in a single post that can be regularly updated, so players don't have to scroll through 20 pages of project announcements to find what they're looking for. Maybe give new mods top spots on the list, so they can get some more press amongst an ever diminishing population of players.

A stickied post about "where to start" (not that there are a lot of people just learning the toolset, but...) for people just learning the scary toolset would also be nice. Maybe with a list of volunteers who don't mind giving advice via PM if new toolset users are too intimidated by the toolset to potentially embarass themselves by asking dumb questions in public forums.

And for the love of the Maker, can we please make a stickied post that explains how to deal with head morphs in the toolset in newbie language or a link to the toolset wiki tutorial (if there is one)? I feel like we have an abundance of "help me change head morphs" posts.

 I never realised we had a community index....how freaking cool is that...? Excuse me while I have a nosy at it...thanks for sharing! Also good ideas!

We can easily create a community project index that is more accurate, up-to-date, less divisive and ironically more open that one. I am pretty sure I can write a utility that would capture the details of every project from the old BSN site and use that information to populate a database. One thing it couldn't do automatically is classify the projects however if I host the database on-line then I could extend the tool to let people preview the list of projects and add tags to each entry. Finally, and/or, periodically we could have the tool generate content for the wiki (in the Community namespace) where everyone in the community could access/edit it. Going forward the application could be used to automatically download files and images from each project with a view to preserving the content if/when BioWare decide to phase out projects. Shall I create a group to explore this further?

I like the Getting Started sticky and especially the list of volunteers. Might be better to have the latter in the wiki so people can add or remove themselves at will but if so we would put the link to the list of volunteers in the Getting Started sticky. I feel that the General Discussion forum's Getting Started sticky should also summarise what the other forums are for to help route people to the correct place.

A tutorial about head morphs is probably best kept in the wiki and linked from the forums. But if it doesn't exist then someone *hint hint* should create one!

It may also be time to revisit the wiki's "Welcome" page and make it more *ahem* welcoming?

DAPPS sound like the dreadful footwear my mother used to make me wear to PE lessons at school :P

.220px-School_plimsolls.jpg

Exhibit A: Uuuurrggh!

Not that I mind the index being called that I just found the acronym funny. ;)

I like the index, it would be useful to have somewhere to preserve projects in one place and keep tabs on them... though I thought they were dead with this new BSN forum upgrade - I haven't seen any legacy of them lying around anywhere?
