I'm not saying the aspect of the Shadow is absent because Persona has definitely incorporated Jungian psychology. I'm just saying Shin Megami Tensei demons might be a separate thing within all the established aspects of these games. They aren't mutually exclusive concepts. Didn't Persona 2 have demons already anyway?

Sure, but the thing is that Persona 2 is a different entity and it wasn't made by the same team as the one we have now. Hashino, Meguro and the others didn't work on it, so they've distanced themselves from it out of respect for the old developers -- They've kept things like Igor and the Velvet Room in tact, in order to still keep it as "Persona -- Although he was mostly superficial in the previous games, and they've build on that, build on the high school setting and taken it in a different direction. It's possible the characters might transform into their Personas, though I'm not seeing it so far, anyway. Demons have always been a Shin Megami Tensei thing and I like to think that's basically the same. The things they fight are Shadows, which are all born from the Collective Unconsciousness of mankind or sea of souls if you will, also adhering to Jung. That is a part of the modern Persona, which is recurrent between the numbered titles and the thematically aspects of Jung

That is true. However I also consider that to be dumb so adding it to the pause menu while letting you change mid battle too is fine by me.

Well, I suppose, but the tactics are hardly useful to set when you control your entire party now, right? They won't be useful outside of combat regardless.

I tend to use them when grinding. Speeds things up. Setting them Pre battle would just be a useful little addition.

Well either you get the first strike and thus you can set them, or you don't and the enemy gets to attack, but I don't know.. I just don't see it as that important :)

Oh it's not important just a minor petty thing that bugs me a little. I do this for pretty much all games.

The demons in P2 are humans who had an artificial persona implanted into them by Nyral, an artificial persona will turn the host into a demon(this is why Strega are dying and need to take those pills, it's also why Chidori is no longer in danger once her persona is gone either) This is all confirmed in the new scenario in P2 EP which was created to bridge P2 to 3 and to explain why there was traditional demons in that game and not in 3/4.

Fair enough, I should apologize as I feel I should consider others feelings too.. I can definitely understand why it would be neat to have the advantage of preparing before battle actually.

Maybe Nyarl and Philemon will show up this time.

Philemon will most likely remain as a Butterfly like in 3 & 4. His job is now filled by Igor.

This is also a fair point, though again -- like I've mentioned before.. The concept of Shadows and Personas do change.. a bit, between games, in 3 a Persona would awaken in a Persona who has the potential, in 4 it would awaken to those who were strong enough to face their Shadow and accept it.. I don't know if it's the same in 5, but the Shadows are definitely still there. Shadows are that part of human psyche which are suppressed by the ego, and thus they manifest inside the Collective Unconciousness, the Sea of Souls, the TV World or Tartarus or even that Labyrinth in Persona Q.

Yup, unless the MC plays the Persona game, we won't see him. More so if the MC will have a unique awakening for this game.

Philemon and Nyarl  are simply spectators now.

I think what they probably want to do is have each game have their own form of awakening that fits hence why we moved away from playing the Persona game to summon Philemon to potential in P3 to facing your shadow in P4 (Yu though most likely did contact Philemon in the past since he already had his persona and didn't seem that bothered in the velvet room before he even got to Inaba)

As for the mooks we'll be grinding, it will probably be shadows unless we fight something like Nyarl who can implant humans with personas on a grand scale. While it's possible we fight fight a human faction again, I doubt it would also be on the scale oft he two in P2(since both where being backed and used by Nyarl) Strega was just a little group of three outcasts.

Yes, I think we can agree on this.

Yeah, makes sense that they would want to distance themselves with this new era of Persona out of respect for former members. I don't know what the enemies represent but I'm intrigued at them seemingly be a separate entity from the main character that used to summon them. More definitive arcana representation enemies maybe? Or the things that have represented Persona are also enemies? Characters have always had to face the aspects of humanity's Shadow. It'd be interesting to have to face the Persona as well.

Ah, so that's the end result of your Persona killing you.

I think that's the idea too. Notice how Narukami never had to face his Shadow? Well I think this protagonist will have to which also kinda fits with whole aspect of "people wanting to break free of their chains"... Facing his Persona/Shadow is a means of escape from his boring routine and do something important.

Heh, that is true. I was just remembering what Hashino said about the game before it was officially shown, how people are constantly repeating the same routine but never trying to spice their life up any more than that. It was a bit more elaborate than that of course.

Atlus is trying to break away from the norm a bit when it comes to Persona, looking at the gameplay. So this makes a lot of sense. It'd be an interesting change of pace.

He loses points because his first thought was Matrix and not Chinese Batman though.

True, but I wouldn't think he'd follow the franchise this intently. Glad he does though.
