Hah! It's obviously not a foreshadowing given the Phantom Thief is actually the butler of the Shirogane family in the game, but it is a fun coincidence at least.

Wait, Chris. Wait.

Are you trying to say that Naoto's butler is the protagonist of P5!?

Parallel Universes confirmed. Gamespot are right. Oh my YHWH.

You know.. it's kinda screwy a bit. Persona 3, 4, Q, Arena basically all of them.. go out of their way to point out that the games take place in the same world, otherwise why would there be reference to Minato from Margaret in P4, why would Gekkoukan be there in P4 and why would Shinji make an elaborate reference to a power out, which is then called back to again by Rise in P4.. and why etc etc.
But at the same time, one has to consider the whole aspect of the Apathy Syndrome, which seemingly is something the P4 characters haven't seen or heard about it, even though it should be something that affected not just Iwatodai at the time but the world.. Also you have the concepts of the Shadows, they function differently in P3 in terms of 'awakening to ones potential' whereas in 4 it's more literal to the writings of Jung where one has to "face ones shadow" and accept it so that it can become a Persona. The Shadows are partially the result of the Kirijo Group's experiment, and yet they've always existed in the Collective Unconsciousness of mankind, but their experiments paved way for the coming of the Dark Hour and Tartarus.

It's fairer to assume that they are not parallel universes obviously and that Gamespot are a bunch of pillocks, who fired Jeff Gerstman for giving Kane & Lynch a bad review even though it was a bad game.

But yes, Yakushiji is definitely the Phantom Thief! D:

I wonder if Catherine took place in the same universe.

With Catherine it's harder, but it's probably easier to assume that it is its own thing, mostly because we are never presented with a name for where we are in the world. The characters seemingly dress very 'western' with 'western names' and the game takes place entirely inside a pub, when it's not making you do block puzzles in a nightmare.

Although there might more fun easters eggs to the game in the future -- There were some in Ultimax, Q and of course Persona 3 Portable with the Vincent look-alike.

Catherine probably does take place in the MegaTen series, just in a diffrent timeline. That's normally how Atlus handles new games and series. Only Persona, SMT, DDS and devil summoner are connected in various ways.

Speaking of being upstanding, I can't wait to see how emphasized the juvenile delinquency of the new protagonist is. We know he's some kind of thief but I wonder how the dialogue options will further drive that home to the player. I wouldn't call Makoto or Yu juvenile in their actions or dialogue so this makes P5 even more interesting to learn about.

I would say this is the first time we are playing a more morally grey protag. You don't go to reform school just for stealing some chocolate bars or something, along with the velvet room, a room tailored to its guest being a prison cell and the fact he can fire a gun with no issues.

The Velvet Room prison also further drives home the psyche of the protagonist as feeling chained down in his life too. At least that's how I see it.

Actually the school they are going to is not a juvenile school. That bit was lost in translation.

So I rearranged my schedule a bit so that I could properly get into the Persona franchise, after having a couple of individuals recommend it to me in the Anime thread. Bought Persona 3 FES through PSN after Chris commented that it works as a better introduction to the series (in addition that I currently lack a Vita, which I will eventually get by next month or so).

Still on the early stages of the game (just recently visited Tartarus for the first time) so can't comment much, though the premise has certainly peeked my interest. I know next to nothing about this franchise, so seeing the usage of Personas not only as a gameplay mechanic, but also having them work as a 'transparent mask' that is stimulated by the characters' personality within the narrative certainly has some nice potential to it. Of course at such early stages of the game I haven't seen it properly portrayed as of yet, but I am looking forward to how it will develop through my actions, alongside being reflected by the companions. It is possibly they will simply work on a rudimentary level, but people spoke highly of it regarding introspection within the game, so I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

Speaking of character traits, I haven't yet explored it properly but I do like its implementation. Most games tend to try encourage the player by having them simply spend more time when gaming and go that extra mile to get the "best outcome", with little to real challenged behind it (e.g. you only need to do X to proceed with the game, but do Y as well and get a better reward!). From my small experience and impression, Persona seems to integrate this mechanic a bit better by having your actions being more 'profound' (I at first laughed at the idea of sleeping at class and it serving no further purpose other than if you don't simply want to give a f*ck, so was surprised to witness that while staying awake raises your Academics, you suffer by further tiring yourself).

Of course it is possible I am thinking way to much to the system and making it more effectual than it actually is, but hopefully it ends up being more thorough in its approach. Well I'll find out more as I play. Will keep the thread updated on my progress (which most likely will be restricted to weekends).

Yeah it's not exactly functional in that way. There's no risk to tiring yourself out when you stay up in class. The journeys into Tartarus do that. The mechanic of sleeping only serves to improve your status if you feel it's necessary since being Tired does negatively affect battle performance. Tired --> Good. Good --> Great.

These status effects determine how long you can battle before it deteriorates again to Tired.

Cool, thanks for the clarification. Then I can pay attention in class without having to turn up as a delinquent, hoho!

Yes, some of the lectures will revolve around upcoming exams questions.. it's a good thing to at least note certain things down as getting the best scores on exams will win approval with some social links, and Mitsuru will have some nifty rewards on the ready. Getting the answers correct will also raise your Charm, which incidentally functions as the key to unlocking other social links.. particularly with Yukari. It's about scheduling, making sure you boost your social stats up quickly, while also climbing as much of Tartarus as you can consistently. The game carries a unique gameplay mechanic which I spend a long while picking apart and analysing. I wrote some stuff on a few pages earlier, though they have spoilers, so feel free to read it whenever  you finish the game. The important thing now is .. keep boosting your social links, keep making new social links, to help boosting your Personas as well, along with your fusions and thus you'll do better in Tartarus and in certain story events. Most importantly. Enjoy the game, it's excellent.

Oh. We are once again a transfer student. But hey! We're going to Tokyo :D

"There will be some sort of Social Link-like feature in Persona 5."

I don't know what to think of this. Sounds like the social links aren't gonna be as important as before.

Interesting, very interesting

Especially about the "problem" and the "social link like" feature. Will be looking forward to get a better idea of what they actually are

I'm gonna wait and see how it will play out. I'm sure they atleast will keep the social aspect in the game.
