It has to do with doing it because they've done it already. That I don't see the point in. To fulfill some arbitrary quota. If they did have a female P5 protagonist with meaningful differences between the two options and they had time for it, fine.
His eyes definitely look closer to that of Catherine than that of Narukami or Minato.

Soejima has a tendency of making the gender somewhat clear with his characters -- Take for instance Erica in Catherine, who's transgender, one will note the apparent male-like features of her face and arms. It's definitely noticeable.

Or you know, it's because people would like that option because they know Atlus would do a good job and make both genders their own characters?
The way I see it is this -- The female protagonist, Minako, is very popular in Japan not just around these parts here, she always rank very well on the Top 20 list of best Persona characters. That sends a message that people might want characters like that and while I don't want to claim anything, It does seem like there are a variety of Persona fans who would like to have the option.. whether they are female or not.
They included [REDACTED] in Persona 4 Ultimax because the fans wanted that character to return, especially the ones in Japan.
Ultimately though, it's up to them if they feel like they could tell the story from a female perspective as well. It would be grand if anything.
Although the important thing is this -- They have to make her distinct, grant her some social links of her own.. That way it'll bring in a whole new experience and that's one of the best parts about having gender as an option in games.
Mind you, I'm not gonna be too much bothered about it, as much as I wasn't with Persona 4 either. Narukami was a fine protagonist but I do wish we could get the option again because I kinda preferred Minako over either of them overall.

Like they did with Minako in P3P

Wait, she was trans? How did I miss that?
iirc it's only truly revealed in one ending.

If you talk to the guys at the pub, their talks with Erica will flat-out point it out. Then there's this quote.
Erica: '' Don't you get it Vincent? Girls are always waiting for a prince to come and sweep them away.''
Vincent: '' I would be more comfortable if that actually came from a GIRL!''
Erica: ''Looks like someone wants to pay their tab right now!''
Dat extortion.
Come to think of it -- In the Catherine demo, a small footage of Lupin III was shown.. perhaps this was deliberate foreshadowing of P5's development but also a declaration of their adoration of the character.

Oh, I just thought he was being a dick (well, he still was, I guess, but you know what I mean). If you talk to the guys at the pub, their talks with Erica will flat-out point it out. Then there's this quote.

This also explains Vincent's friends' reactions to Toby wanting to date her, which I hadn't understood at the time. I guess my brain was just too scrambled by sliding block puzzles to pick up on it.
Yeah, exactly, that too. It's fair to assume that at first but the game gives a few other hints in that direction.

That doesn't mean anything in regards to what I was saying. If Atlus wants to do that I'm perfectly fine with it.

Ironically, that may be sorta why its not being done since unlike in most cases where gender makes an arbitrary difference, Atlus may not be interested unless they also were able to put in the work to make gender differences like in P3P.
Might also have to do with having to actually use a protaganist for follow up or spin off material later on. It's a bit of effort for an alternate character you might end up using once. Everyone else is having fun in Persona Q, Minako's still in alt reality limbo.
Makes me think Minako was just a trial run to see if they could pull of a female protaganist in general without much thought to actual implementation later on. But they do at least know that the option is availble to them if they ever decide on it.
I don't think that matters. Because if that's the case then they wouldn't have made Persona Q in the first place as it is much like the other spin-offs.. superficial to the overall Persona experience. You can play Persona 3, 4 & 5 without having to play the other games.. There are no real continuity between them other than easter eggs or subtle references that don't overtly mean much.
P4Hero's name is Narukami to some, Souji Seta to others, Charlie to Giantbomb, Kenpachi Ramasama to the Two Best Friends blokes.. There are no real identity or characterization to him.. Each game depicts him differently, as much as each player plays him differently.
I think it's important to consider that Minako is a popular character in Japan and thus it wouldn't be out of the question to see the option again in the future.
If we have to bring in the old games too, then I suppose you could also bring up Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, where you play as Maya the whole way through.

Sounds good to me since none is asking for anything less than that

All those character names and personalities have to same appearance though and that's largely what I'm referring to. Plus Maya was a character in P2 along side the male protagonist not an alternate version of one.

She was an example of having a female protagonist, which was meant to illustrate that it isn't out of the question, nor was Minako necessarily a one-time deal. Also, Minako is her own character, she's not just an alternate version of one character, there are enough differences to make her distinct hence why she was fun and why the option itself would be fun to bring back. Anyway, the protagonists might share the same appearance, but they are not the same character between all the games.. The P4hero in Q isn't the same as Narukami in Ultimax, as much as he isn't the same in the Manga. There is no actual canon version of him.. The fact that people are too busy wallowing around what's considered canon is what's baffling, when it matters bugger all overall, given that Atlus has basically said that everything is canon. They've even been quoted on saying that Persona share the same universe as DDS or SMT.
I'm not saying a straight up female protagonist isn't out of the question I'm saying alternating protagonists that fill the same role within a game might be considering how Atlus has been reluctant to use Minako in follow up titles thus far.

They are spin-offs though.. but it's not like you don't have a point either. With spin-offs they need to use a face, a voice and characterization to market and sell their game so obviously they went with the male bloke because of obvious reasons. The thing is though that the protagonists are so broadly different portrayed between the spin-offs that there are no true actual face to them.. It's more or less a placeholder. Disregarding that, I still don't believe it's crazy to think that they'd consider the idea again for a future re-release of Persona 5. The PS4 does not have the same limitation that the PSP did.
Persona 5. Can not explain the excitement i feel despite seeing just a little bit.
The aesthetic feel/tone is like Catherine one of my favorite games.
Big city/Tokyo setting.
MC that has the potential to outswag King's game champion Yu Narukami.
Juvenile delinquents as main cast. MC has his own issues he has to deal with
Social links returning. Picarisque romance
Thievery theme and the color red.
Coming to playstation 4
Cat companion will turn into cat maid, calling it now.
Smaller cast which hopefully means more time/development with the characters we get. More connection.

I'm really anxious to see how are the new social link.
