Have around 6 hours of game time on P3. Gotten more accustomed to the general "behavior" of it by now.

Up to floor 14 in Tartarus, progressing 4-5 floors per night and always leaving once I reach the 'elevator'. I do like the lack of a save option in the tower--makes it more engaging scaling up the levels. Any recommendations on Fusions and when to do them? Been ignoring it myself, due to finding Persona cards as I move up, in addition to leveling up each individual Persona.

Social link upgrades I've been collecting aimlessly. Is it better to work on one aspect primarily at first and then move to the next, or having a mixture?

Anyhow, general impressions of the game is favorable on my end. Not that familiar with turn based games but the gameplay is solid I am finding and entertaining enough to have me invested. Mostly looking forward to more character interaction from the main characters since I've found it to be rather hollow so far, but I assume this has to do with the game moving with a certain pace, wherein you slowly but gradually start to interact with them more and more. Interesting mechanic for sure if that's the case.

You cannot go on without fusion. It's imperative that you fuse a lot.. also you'll note the Arcana and how each Persona is categorized between them. This is where the connection to your social links begin. When you rank up your social links to at Rank 4, you're gonna need a Persona from the respective Arcana to level it up further -- It's where the mutual beneficial gains enter the fray. The more you level up your social links, the more XP your fused Personas will gain and thus more powerful. Fuse your Personas together, try to keep a team of Personas that can cover most of the elements and aren't carrying too many weaknesses, go after those that can "Nullify" the elements or at best Repel.. but most of those won't arrive until a bit later in the game.

The character interaction with the main characters will improve as more story events occur, or when social links starts with some of them -- You can also talk to them in the dorm, and they'll usually always have something new to say, check the TV as well for some background trivia on how things are on the outside, or check the surveillance room for recordings. Be mindful about your social stats, and try to gain as many social links as possible too. Some social links will actually open up new social links to start.

As for which Personas you should get, well that depends on how far you are in terms of level and everything.. Evidently, you can probably figure it out yourself inside the Velvet Room, you can see which fusions you can make with the ones you have.

Thanks for the clarification. Wasn't aware of the TV and the Monitor, so gonna check those out. Should be able to put some solid hours during the weekend into this game, so will post again once I've progressed a lot further into it (or if I stumble upon something that need some help with).

That's moment in Persona 1 where you almost get game overed by an exploding demon toilet. Sure I survived in the end, my dignity not so much though.

I know it's a little belated but regarding our shared love for trip-hop,

YOU'RE STILL AWESOME CHRIS (I've been pushing DJ Krush on people for years so it makes me insanely happy that you're a fan too)

Yaaar. Acid jazz seriously would fit the kind of forming ideas I have around the city and such from the trailer

Is Persona 5 being made with the same game engine as Catherine was?

I'm a man of my word.

lol nah, the premise intrigued me so naturally I'd delve into it. Mostly came from the implied Jungian psychology, but hey it has some fun gameplay as well for me to enjoy!

No. Catherine was build on a third-party engine named "Gamebryo" while Persona 5 uses an in-house engine.

It's actually amazing how much they managed to accomplish with an old engine like that where Oblivion & Morrowind ran on.

You and me both -- There was no one who recommended the games to me, I looked them up myself -- It was mostly due to the uniqueness of the gameplay, its setting and how it was nothing like any other JRPG. The Jungian stuff came as surprise to me later. I read a lot psychology in high school and thus I found it to be a quite neat bonus.. Though you might end up finding a whole lot more you'll like about it.

I'm somewhat responsible for converting a few people to the Persona games -- I like to think I'm responsible for Swedish Viking Bro above, but I think his decision was also based around recommendations from the FemShep community too. Although, if it wasn't for me, our dear Rah would have given up on Persona with Yukiko's dungeon in Persona 4.

Milan is my doing -- He started with Catherine and later asked about the Persona games. Mr. House is not my doing, I don't think there's a single game in existence he hasn't played (but then again he's Canadian and has no lifewhatsoever.. jk). Dominus expressed interest at least, I told him not to watch playthroughs of the game and instead play them himself as in regards to the Persona games it's best to judge by playing. SeekerSparrow, who doesn't roam this forum anymore also played them at my request and liked them. The rest who roams this thread has most likely known about the games before I did, and thus I don't know their stories too much. :)

The Danish bro was a large part in me getting into Persona for sure, a few other people across the interwebzzz did poke me about starting so in my eternal benevolence I accepted the task.

About the castle..  it was so rude.. I would at least be getting visits when in jail that's a bloody given! If not for that one last try I'd likely ended up killing some random person on a street in annoyance. Instead I got a waifu and the knowledge that I no matter what they throw at me I'll eat it.

I win

YAAAY

I got entangled entirely by accident. Got sent a promo copy of P3 and honestly wasn't expecting much at all. Plus, I was put off at first because I was entrenched in a douche phase of lolanime at the time.

Figured I might as well give it a chance and was immediately pulled in by the opening cutscene, particularly the whole Yukari segment. It was mostly the "what the ****!?" factor that kept me engrossed. From then I would play in little chunks before finally committing and spending hours on it. Not long after I was done, I hunted down a copy of P4 down which was no easy feat. Following that, I was a fully converted fan. Which I suppose is evidenced by the fact that I got a Vita entirely for P4G. I mean, I have other games on it but P4G and P3P occupy the majority of my time.

I've usually played enough of a certain gameplay type that watching is equivalent to playing it; Persona is definitely an exception to that rule.

The systems they use seem to be exclusive to the series itself. The same experience is impossible to replicate from watching. P4 captures that a great deal more than previous titles with the Job Systems and Attributes that come into play. And the weather definitely throws the player a curveball. Atlus is doing what they can to make your playthrough feel as unique as they can manage. The closest I've seen in terms of their Blocked-Time schedule system would be Valkyrie Profile, but it was a fair bit more strict - once you've headed to a locale, that block of time was eliminated, even if you just ran in out of curiosity.

Scans from Famitsu show Arsene in its full glory!

(Under the cut because the image is big)

Spoiler

A few more scans...

Spoiler

Spoiler

The bottom scan with the lower left image shows Arsene appearing behind MC so I'm gonna say that the personas in battle in at least that instance are the same as prior installments. No turning into your persona in other words. That Agidyne looks cool af I must admit.

They mostly came from dualshockers, so I'll see if they have a translation, if not I'll do a basic one of the bolded points.

But if any of you happen to have better (any) Japanese feel free to translate it.

Edit: Notes from DS (Someone's gonna be happy here ;) )

  1. The protagonist gains his Persona after certain events unfold and the city is enveloped in darkness. His hideout is most likely the cafe he lives in.
  2. He attends a private school called Shujin Academy, which is a pun of the Japanese word prison “Shuujin.”
  3. According to the magazine, the scene of the protagonist being consumed by blue flames is his Persona awakening. The mask is the blue flames taken form.
  4. Student life, weather patterns and calendar system from Persona 4 will be making a return.
  5. The Sneak system that let’s players gain the initiative in battle will be making a return, as will All-Out Attacks. Masks are worn in battle as well and have a significance their.
  6. Famitsu believes Cooperation will be about getting closer to allies as well as sympathizers.
  7. Shoji Meguro’s soundtrack will be based on acid Jazz, which includes elements of jazz, soul, funk, disco and hip hop.
  8. It was also confirmed that the trailer from last week was PS3 footage.

Called it!

Although I admit that I was wrong about the blue flames part. Everything else is spot on with my assumptions though.

Dengeki has also reported that the city in Persona 5 isn't Tokyo but rather a city that is reminiscent of it -- That makes more sense to me. Persona has never really adapted a real-life setting, there's only been an occasion where the P3 cast visited Kyoto but that about does it.
