So I got myself a Vita. And wouldn't you know, Gamestop happened to have a a -20% sale on PSVita. Is this fate? Anyhow, gonna download Golden and get myself started. Very interested in what P4 does differently when compared to P3.

It's proof that you made the right choice in getting Golden.

It's more lighthearted, but it's still very, very good. It's got the best Persona villain so far whom I love.
All I know is that I'm glad you played Persona 3 FES over Persona 3 Portable at least.

Good to hear. P3's adversaries were rather lackluster as characters, since the game focused more on what each respective member embodied on a thematic value.
Be sure to let us know who your waifu is at the end.

Nyx was a fine antagonist, considering the symbolic value behind the whole concept of death, but the actual human enemies weren't as quite as great. There was something I liked about Takaya, I elaborated a bit on that earlier in the thread, I can probably bring it up again. But he's not as great as the antagonist of Persona 4.
Also, I'm really tired of the waifu nonsense that some fans constantly whip up during Persona discussions. I like to think we are better than that here.

As I said, on a thematic value they were great, though not individually as persons. Nyx is more of a mechanic that envelops most of the aspects that P3 delved into and in turn makes her a more compelling adversary (instead of having the game solely rely on her being the harbringer of death). Strega is cool in what they brought forward against the Sees, and for a dichotomy it was quite good, though as characters on their own they were rather meh, I found.
Eh, nothing bad with a waifu remark, since it is such a lighthearted gesture (well most of the time). Of course if you think that my post here will revolve around waifu worship, then no need to fear on that.

Well, I'm just saying on behalf on how things usually go with Persona fandom in regards to that whole aspect, so as long as it doesn't devolve into irritating back-forth-waifu-wars then that's alright.
Given the whole romance aspect is such a miniscule and pointless part of the games, then I'd say as long as it doesn't go overboard then you can feel free to share whomever you romanced.
I wouldn't say Nyx is a mechanic, as much as she's an interesting reversed idea of an antagonist. She's the manifestation of the true evil in the game. In of it self, Erebus is the true evil (the evil of mankind, men like Takaya) -- Much like most of the gods in Persona, they function as a Catalyst for mankind's desires and thus their only purpose is to fulfill them.

Well that is the thing I mean by her serving as a mechanic, since solely she represents doom and destruction, which individually that is all there is to her. She isn't much of a character on herself, since she is simply the embodiment of what the game has been building up to through its themes and Ryoji. She is simply the 'face' of death, and considering how elements like loss, apathy, change, etc are displayed through various means, is what ultimately make her a compelling adversary since you are not merely struggling against Nyx, but what she represents.
That's the way I see it.

I thought when you phrased it as mechanic, you meant "plot device" or something akin to gameplay -- Anyway, I think I understand you better now, and as such I don't think we disagree at all. In regards to Nyx, the way she functions isn't that much different from other Persona antagonists before, or even Shin Megami Tensei itself. She's the conductor from the unconciousness desires of mankind, a product born from the sea of souls, though The Answer reveals her true purpose. It's to make contact with Erebus, the manifestation of all the negative energies of mankind, like Nyarlathotep of Persona 2.
It's noteworthy to point out that I don't think we are actually saying that Nyx wasn't good as an antagonist, that's not how it sounds like to me at least. What it is that makes her dangerous is ultimately that she's faceless, and you can't destroy something which you can't even put a face on. The name Nyx isn't even her real name, it's just an image that some would have chosen to give her, but we know her as Nyx, she's the moon, she's also the Harbinger of the Fall, but she's also not truly evil either -- Because morality doesn't play into the rules of the Fall.
Nyx was a name that was chosen, due to the deliberately symbolic value she carries with Thanatos & Hypnos. Greek mythology describes her as the mother of both -- Taking the knowledge of Jung into consideration, the collective unconciousness is a collective net of mankind's unconciousness mind. His studies would bring up patterns, notes of people mentioning images of monsters in dreams, usually images that are similar, resembling beasts of folktales or mythology, it's where the whole concept of Persona & Shadow came from and why they resemble legends or beasts of folklore. It's all rather interesting, but it also plays into the plot with how these myths stories would reflect the story of the game. Orpheus would traverse the Underworld to save his wife Eurydice, essentially reflecting The Journey of P3, the protagonist would enter the underworld (the realm of Nyx) to save his beloved etc.

Well good that we see eye to eye then.
And yes, it certainly goes without saying that the game is symbolical in a plethora of ways, with Greek mythology playing a large role in defining various aspects; most prominently the characters. Spent a good chunk of time refreshing my memory on various gods and such to see how each Persona identified each companion and the similarities are quite evident. I do enjoy when a game stimulates me in such a manner.

Goddamn, the demons in SMTIV can manage to K.O. my own demons that are 6 level higher just like that. Liking the difficulty but sometimes these arbitrary K.O.s can get a bit annoying.
