The next Persona 5 news can for now be expected for June 25th, the release of Dancing All Night, as the pre-order of that game comes with a bundle that includes Persona 5 Game-footage.

Please do. Considering how much both games delve into, I'm certain there are plenty of aspects I missed or went through my head, so anything new (or just an expansion on something) is always appreciated.

Well, I'm probably gonna talk a bit about the Arcana, the Jung stuff (read a bit of his works when I was in high school), but otherwise it's most likely gonna expand upon on what you've already been talking about, I imagine. I think we relatively draw (mostly) the same content from it, anyway.

I do wonder what Carl Jung thinks of his life work--which have turned into a game about being a pimp and jumping into TVs, hoho!

 

But glad to hear it. My knowledge on tarot cards is superficial at best, and my psychological studies are rather restricted (something which I regret I didn't continue with). Knowledgable enough to understand what the games touches upon, but I'm hardly an expert on the area, so I'm looking forward to what you will write who has a deeper view on the matter.

As I said this was originally written to explain why I was drawn to the characters, with a specific audience in mind so bear with me:

I guess the best place to start is her S link and how that compares to the rest of the group. There are two specific things that mark Naoto apart form the rest of your companions. The first is that she's the only party member that requires a specific stat increase, now the requirement this knowledge hurtle is pretty obviously done by the Man in Black to make sure you can actually keep up with her and the whole Phantom Thief mystery, however I also suspect that this is done so Naoto has an easier time connecting to you. Let's face it the girl is very much a loner when you meet her, partly because she's used to the isolation because of her work experience but also because of her manner of speaking and likely having a somewhat expanded knowledge base compared to most people. This doesn't mean others are too dumb to understand her is just means that she might have a hard time conveying ideas if people are unfamiliar with what she's referring to or needs to provide exposition to try and explain what she's trying to say. Say if you started talking about video games with someone who doesn't play any and doesn't understand the appeal, so they just give you awkward and confused looks as you keep talking. Her manor of speech and diction is also very on point and while I love that aspect of her I also know it can often come as someone putting on airs, which is largely how the local cops feel about her.

 

This sort of thing resonates pretty strongly with me because I can count several occasion where it happened to me personally when socializing with other people, so it's a rare instance where I feel like I can directly relate instead of just sympathize to a character. Now this has largely been speculation on my part but there is a brief moment in the game were you can see it. When she first starts attending school her interactions with the other students when she transfers in leads to a brief scene between herself and two girls asking her to to hang out with them. Here we a bit of her difficulty with communication as her declining the two girls' offer to hang out with them came of a little rude even if that probably wasn't Naoto's intent(they were basically asking her out and she's just flatly told them she's not interested), and the girls started giving her a bit of a hard time before Yosuke and Kanji intervened. The scene also conveys her rather introverted nature, at that point. On one hand we know she very much yearns for connection with the investigation team and general acceptance of her abilities by the world, but she's also so used to being isolated at this points she's basically reluctant to try and from connections with other, initially her only interest in the investigation team is their connection to the case, and as an introvert myself that's largely a spot depiction of what being introverted is like. We don't hate connecting with people we're just selective about it because we want the connections to have a bit of meaning and are sometimes reluctant to take a chance on people and participate in activities we largely have no interest in.(shouldn't really come as a surprise that I prefer hanging out in our little group as opposed to making myself known on rest of the forum).

 

The other aspect that largely sets her apart are her romance flags. She is the only female character that requires specific dialogue choices and I find that concept wonderful. Not only because it's very fitting considering her entire character arc and personality but also because it's really nice to have a romance option that's for once not initiated by the mere fact that the protagonist exists. It might not be the hardest thing to do but you do have to understand her growth and pursue her yourself if you want the romance to happen. With the other girls it's largely obvious that they like you, Naoto doesn't even bother thinking about the idea until you bring it up, it's a small thing but it makes the resulting interactions feel that much more rewarding when you get to them. I like the way she responds to the love confession as well, with the other characters their feelings for you are readily apparent and they're pretty quick to accept, our detective prince has to go home and actually consider what her feelings are and how to respond to them, which is such a character moment because that's how her mind actually works, she very rarely rushes into things, and looses her composure.

 

Which isn't to say she's completely closed off, she's actually a very passionate person it might just not be obvious at first glance like it is with someone like say Rise, who's very open about her emotions and basically radiates her feelings 24/7. In almost direct contrast Naoto is much more subdued and subtle about showing how she feels. She shows passion largely through actions rather than words, mainly in relation to her actions in helping resolve the case, such as her gambit to show that the killer is still at large and that she's endangering herself in the process shows how far she's willing to go. It's also the little thing in her interaction with the main character that show how deeply she feels for and trusts him. She would dress up in in that schoolgirl outfit for just anyone. It was a one time thing and the protaganist was the one person she felt she could show her more feminine side to. She's trying her hardest to show her feelings and as we already established it's just not something that comes natural to her, so it ends up being this odd blend of her stumbling through her romantic life while at the same time maintaining the elegant sincerity that ends up being very endearing. It probably comes across best in P4Golden on valentines day in particular:

 

 

She's self aware enough to know that she might not be behaving like one might expect a girl to but at the same time clearly yearns to express her love even if she finds the whole thing terribly embarassing.

 

She's also pretty passionate about protecting those she cares about and this comes across best with Nanako. Not only is she to first person to rush to your house and contact the others when Nanako gets kidnapped but is also heavily contributes to helping get Nanako away from Namatame and the is one to actually suggest how to get rid of Namatame because of just how pissed she is with the idea of him getting away. Now her suggestion is ultimately the wrong choice however her attitude marked a few things about her character in that instance. First unlike the other girls she's got a bit of a darkside to her, not to the point of being edgy but practical enough to not just be some ideology for justice. Someone willing to bend to rules a little if it helps get the job done, demonstrated again when she figures out how to get you into Namatames room so you can talk to him. So yeah, try not to hurt someone she cares about, even if the laws fails she will think up a way to make you regret it.

 

Second it shows she's human and not just a cold calculating person but one capable of making mistakes and yes she does feel emotions and just like the rest of us, they can also cloud her judgement. Luckily she's also self aware enough to realize this eventually. The third aspect the scene demonstrated was that just how attached she was to Nanako. Now this one is easy to miss since Nanako only shows up in Naoto's S Link if she's not in the hospital but their interaction their interaction is one of Naoto playing Cool Older Sis to Nanako. Not only does she get Nanako involved in the Phatom Thief riddle but is both appreciative and encouraging to the girl for helping find an answer our detective couldn't. Admittedly this doesn't come off that well in the game as the two have few interactions. I was very however very happy that the Anime played it up a bit more in a few scenes.

 

As far as your companions go she's also arguably your most capable compatriot as this mystery goes. She's very proactive, taking active steps to not only solve the case but also both able and willing to formulate a plan of action when the local cops want to just close the case, and is also the first person to suggest that maybe you should be thinking a bit more about the nature of the Midnight channel and your own abilities (and it turns out she was right to be suspicious). It really goes without saying that she's pretty sharp, her whole reason for talking to Kanji before his kidnapping was because she had figured out the pattern around the same time you did, except on her own and this was right after she got assigned to the case, the Police didn't figure it out until Rise, (and this was probably Naoto pointing them in the right direction). She's also quick to note your group's involvement, she's not entirely sure what it is but she's clever enough to keep an eye on them. To his credit Dojima also suspected something since the incidents began no long after our character arrived, but keeping with the theme of the game he was too wiling to look deeper, up until the later showed up and he couldn't ignore it anymore. Naoto on the other hand managed to figure out that not only are you involved but that she could use you as a life line when she used herself as bait.

 

And finally maybe the simplest thing about her is that she's fun. Solving riddles and reconnecting with the thrill of mysteries and her childhood enthusiasm for them is just plain fun and I enjoy every moment of it. So overall she's confident in her abilities but not to the point of arrogance or pettiness. She's also brave, intelligent, helpful, caring, passionate, all around a wonderfully complex and intriguing character with a great personal story arc and multilayered personality I can't help but find appealing.

A very enlightening read, Grey! I definitely share the appeal of her proactive role in the group and her subtle portrayal of her as an individual.
